Not 100% sure about US-US but I know inside Europe it would take 4-5 days to clear.
The receiver of the money would get notified and "see" the transfer in his account but it
is not yet added to their balance. After 4-5 days it clears and gets added.

I keep a zero balance in PP, and all of my purchases and... gifts... transfer from my bank account immediately to the best of my knowledge (US-US)
i think it depends on how you set it up to add the money...
i think if it adds it by with drawing it from the account, like a echeck it takes a few days.. thats why i added my atm card like a credit card and that makes it instant..
you may want to look into that..

If you have a credit card on file as a "back up source of funding" and you send the money out of your bank account to someone that has a PayPal account, that transfer is instant.
With no back up source, you can transfer money from your bank account into your PayPal account, which will take about 3 pr 4 days, then you can send money from your PayPal account to someone else instantly.
Alternatively, (again no back-up source) you can just send the other person a PayPal eCheck, and rather than transferring the money into your account, PayPal will transfer it into the other person's PayPal account after the 3 or 4 day clearance.

This is correct. If the amt is covered by what's in PP, its instant. If the amt is more than what's in PP, it will draw from your bank account and send as an echeck which will take several days to clear. This can cause shipping delays on eBay and also causes you to be "late" with streaming ppv purchases (accustats mentions this on their page).
But if you have a credit card backing up your bank account, then every transaction is instant.
Thank you all. I still don't know what happened. I hardly ever keep $$ in paypal and for years when I paid someone it is still instant. I have a backup credit card and plenty in bank. A few weeks ago I paid off someone on here and it took about 4 days for him to get it. Maybe it was just a one time hic cup in the system. I'm planning on doing some business on the BB matches for something small to sweat and when I lose I want that person paid instantly. Johnnyt
Just a guess... could your credit card linked to PP have expired? Double check it perhaps...
My son stuck some money in my paypal account recently direct from his bank and it was in the next day when I checked.
Don't know if it is the same with merchants or not.\
