People with the CLAP!!!

Is it just me or does anyone else find people with the "CLAP" annoying? I'm not talking about the medical condition, I'm talking about people at major events who clap after every shot, and I mean every shot!

Now I know that most of the pros make some pretty spectacular shots, and on those occasions it's justifiable, as well as when they sink the winning ball. But when you're watching a tournament on TV and these people clap after easy straight in side pocket shots, or basically shots that the average Joe could make, "AND" they do this throughout the entire match, then to me that's a bit much!

I play league, and you don't find people clapping that much during a match. And I think it could blow someone's concentration to have their entire team clap after every shot they made, as well as every night they played.

Now I'm sure most of the pros have nerves of steal and a high degree of concentration, but it makes you wondering if the pros sometimes find it a bit annoying or distracting when people CLAP AFTER EACH AND EVERY SHOT, regardless of it's level of difficulty?

If you are talking about what you see on TV, the audience is told to applaud after every shot, by the TV production people.
If you attended the tournament, you would find that they don't do that, other than the TV rounds.

I love when someone's shits in a ball or gets lucky and people clap like crazy

Or how about when a major female pro (I say female because it's mostly the televised female tournaments) make a total hanger or misses easy position and the audience gets the "clap"?

I imagine that there's a sign that says "clap" that lights up, or that they are told to applaud before the match. Yes, makes watching the match very annoying.

At the WPBA televised events, Steve Tipton encourages the audience to clap after each shot. Go figure.

Fred <~~~ hates the CLAP

YES! I cannot stand watching WPBA because of the clap... that and they take so long on every shot... and the loose pockets.

Has anyone been paying attention to IPT crowds? Do they have to clap, or is does the crowd save it for when it's deserved?

You make a good point, but without sound I lose any attention I had left. Watching women's 9Ball is boring anyway, and I'd rather be playing pool than watching them. If only there was a good co-ed televised straight pool tournament.

It most assuredly aggrevates me. It usually happens by women watching women. I remember at Joss Events where Karen Corr shows up. She'd be playing some guy, doesn't matter who. He'd make a truly spectacular shot and there would be dead silence, except for a couple of fingers snapping or something. Then on every little routine shot by Karen, that I could make easiliy leave alone somebody of Karen's caliber, there would be some applause. Heaven forbid she should make a diffilcult shot the place exploded.
I find it very irritating, applause should be reserved for shots that even the pros would consider special.

Maybe you should make a sign and when you think it is appropriate for them to clap then just hold up the sign. LOL=)) I know what you mean though. It seems a little irritating sometimes.

There is only one instance that clapping irritates me. When the player pockets a simple shot then gets totally out of line or even hooks themselves and the stone idiots that don’t know or remember you have to follow yourself as well as your opponent are clapping the loudest. It appears to a knowledgeable viewer that they are applauding for the player sitting on the chair.

Actually Purdman I have tried turning down the volume on my TV, but it's not the same, and I like hearing the commentary being made by the host(s) of the show. When the host comments on what they think a player will do next, how a player hit a shot wrong, or what he or she would have done differently, etc...etc... makes watching more interesting. I loved listening to Mike Segal when he commented throughout the IPT tourney. So yes, I could turn the volume down, but I don't think it would be as interesting.

Maybe you could just hit mute after every shot and then turn the sound back on. I personally don't like to watch people play pool. I don't even like watching the pros live very much. I would rather play. Even at the Open this year I didn't watch more than five hours during the week and I staked the winner!
Purdman

PS: It's easy to go down in the basement to play. I would probably watch more if it wasn't for that.

that's what the MUTE button is for.

BTW, I can't stand the commentary of any of the announcers that do the WPBA events. Mute is always on, if I watch the match.

Clapping is annoying.

The US OPEN accustats and Bcn doesn't have as much clapping as the WPBA events (like Cornerman said... Steve Tipton encourages this from the spectators)

Yeah, but just my luck I'd develop carpal tunnel syndrome and would have to give up pool all together...and that ain't happening...LOL!!!

Whats even worse is when your at an event and some idot next to you claps for the most simple shot. Oh wait that was my girfriend......lol.

Well, I'll defend the clappers every time.

Is pro hoops hurt by the fact that the crowd cheers after a made free throw, a proposition that is better than 75% at pro level. Is pro golf hurt by cheers for the three foot putt successfully holed, over an 80% proposition at that level? Should we not cheer when Pedro Martinez strikes out the opposing pitcher because it was almost a foregone conclusion he would once the count went to 0 - 2? Are viewers deluded into believing that the free throw was difficult, that the holing of the three foot putt was a monumental achievement, that striking out the opposing pitcher was a big deal? I don't think so. Ever cheered for an extra point in football? That's almost a 99% proposition.

Sports fans applaud even the most modest accomplishments of those they are cheering for, and that's as it should be. When the applause dies down, we're in trouble.

I'm about like Purdman in the way I don't like to watch pool very much. Even the bigger events I play in if I'm out I won't even know who won until someone tells me and that may be weeks sometimes.

I don't mind the TV clappers that much, but I've never watched more than 30 seconds of a WPBA match (no interest).

Now what does get under my skin is a bunch of TV Screamers watching "Foolball" (football). Anyone that screams or claps at a TV isn't but a few cents short of a bus ride to the funny farm in my opinion.

Merry Christmas All :)

haha, that's so true. Does anyone know about the IPT clapping situation? Does the same thing happen?

Do you mean did the same thing happen?

The IPT is dead and buried. We are all simply waiting for Kevin to come to the conclusion that he has done enough damage control. At that point, he's gonna say "Sorry it didn't work out, better luck next time.."
