Personal Safety Thoughts When Returning To Pool Rooms

I’ve been thinking quite a bit about pool room safety. I want to start playing again, but minimize the risk as much as possible.

4. Do not tolerate anyone taking an adjacent table. If I can’t get them to move I’ll leave the establishment, and let the owner know why

Why in the world would you think that the owner would want you to stay, rather than the people playing on the adjacent table? Especially since it’s far more likely that those on the adjacent table would be willing to reasonably share space with other paying customers...

If I were the owner, I know who I’d rather have as my customer.

Just sayin’... ;)

Do you have some evidence there isn't possible infection from a cloud you can smell?

I'm not sure why you're showing barbs...?

Only the ivy league educated could guess for certain but I'm thinkin' it's about the same for clouds you can't smell.

don't have to be an ivy-leaguer to "guess for certain." ;) :p

kidding aside, I think it is reasonable to have concern over what's coming out of other people's mouth/lungs.

the real experts don't all agree on how long covid 19 can linger in the air, on or off aerosolized droplets.

I remember seeing Dr Fauci get agitated over being asked about a recent study that showed aerosolized droplets can travel ~20 feet in some special circumstances and he did acknowledge that, yes, it may be poss for this to happen in the rare instances when people had an incredibly huge sneeze or cough. The reason for his agitation was that he didn't want people to place high value on such an outlier and that we shouldn't lose confidence in the 6 foot distance rule.

bottom line for me is that there is still a lot that is not understood about this virus but if you believe that it is highly contagious and formidable (I do) then why not try to put all the odds we can in our favor? We try to do this in our pool matches, right?

best,

According to projections by the end of May, pretty much all of America, and much of the rest of the world, will be at or near the end of the covid-19 related deaths from this initial wave.

I'm wondering what measures, if any, do you plan to use to try and stay safe when returning to our community pool rooms. I expect that the rooms will have some sort of social distancing guidelines but what about us as individuals?

Are you planning on doing anything above and beyond what the pool rooms do in an effort to stay safe?

best,
brian kc

I live in NY so I don't expect rooms to open by the end of May. If they do, that's ludicrous. I'll avoid them for a long time to come.

It won't matter if it's masks required and aerosol. There will always be a couple of people wearing bandannas or scarves, pulled down so they can chat, laugh, vape and shed it up on the cloth, the balls, your beer. The customers will need to be monitored closely by management. Our Von's grocery store has masks required but I often see the baggers with masks down, chatting and handling groceries, spraying droplets covering all your stuff like it's a big joke, even though people here have complained about it repeatedly.

Unfortunately as long as people are taking this lightly, we are all considerably more at risk. It's a matter of attitude and unpreparedness.

Same with California. Pool rooms are at the back of the line. Makes you wonder if businesses that are shut down for extended periods due to law will get additional relief? Very sad that with PPP they have to hire people back but can't even open.

How about combining all the recommended low tech ways to protect yourself with a high tech solution, namely, a portable, handheld Ultraviolet - C (UVC) wand to kill the COVID-19. I'm not sure how effective these devices are but they say it's especially good for sanitizing cell phones and keyboards. Anyways, no pool tournaments for me for a while.

I think most Pool Rooms are mom & pop businesses, no like Mickey D with big corporate backing them, tough enough to survive before Covid - 19 Hox. Tought now if they ever reopen, with more rules & restrictions.

Yes sir, I was being sarcastic there. :poke:

Agreed...I'm still on the "car next to you at a stoplight" dilemma. With windows down....HARK!!!! :banghead:

Again, if you can smell what is coming out of the adjacent vehicle, what assurance do you have there aren't infectious particles in the exhalation?

:lmao: As we've determined, the same assurance you have when there is no smell coming from the vehicle. The whole reason I recommended you keep your windows up.

Be that as it may, my original post was about drivers (mainly foreign by heritage) wearing a mask while driving by themselves. If it's of consequence, none had their windows down.

So thank God; I felt safe having mine down. Plus I was in the left lane! :thumbup2:
