It would get maximum exposure in the Main Forum and protect the most number of people from getting screwed by Tonkin.

I feel this is much more than a transaction. It is something that has gone on for years and years and has affected many of us!

I, for one and very thankful that this forum exists and that it exposes the unscrupulous characters that are in our midst. Without the dedicated honest folks here it would undoubtedly be far more pervasive than it is.

The history of members being taken advantage of is very sad. Some of the nicest folks have been defrauded, Steve Piesner comes to mind may he RIP. I met him and he was a true gentleman, easy going, respectful in every way. Yet he also fell victim to fraud and deceit.

There seems to be no easy answer or way to completely stop the vermin but it gives me hope that some have the courage to admit they were wronged and then go after the perps until justice is rendered.

The AZ community is to be commended for bringing light to this situation and I sincerely hope that the member that was wronged will get satisfaction!

You said in your first post that “l thought he was a friend. Boy was I wrong”

You were aware his wife was sick and needed some sort of treatment and so you gave him much less $$$ than the cue was worth thinking it was almost ready and that you could make a score but Pete Tonkin strung you along you say until you asked for your money back and so he did give it back then according to you he sold the cue for $2500 more than he was selling it to you for. Did i get sll that right?

If i did get it right l think there’s a lot of room for examination on both sides regarding the definition of “friend”

Jmo
exactly! the plot thickens, who was trying to take advantage of who???? by the way, his wife did die and he was the sole care giver during her prolonged illness.

What is your relationship with Tonkin? You seem to be pumping him up. You’re saying it‘s always the person who sent him money is the one in the wrong. That’s bullshit.

If someone posts "I need to raise funds and will sell a cue for xxx", takes the money, and then DOES NOT DELIVER THE COMPLETED CUE, is the buyer somehow at fault?

Please explain.

it appears 3 or 4 other members have posted and the total loss is in the neighborhood of 20 to 30K.

at what point does "class action" become viable?

is the thread on facebook getting action?

Unfortunately, one needs at least harmed parties to get a class certified under civil rule 23. That is not going to happen here.

Well, I've decided I'm not ever going to buy a Tonkin after reading these posts all over AZB. Besides, my level of play would do fine with an ~$1K + McDermott or similar cue. If a nice custom comes my way, in person, I'll consider it.

I'm making NO EXCUSE for Tonkin's actions however, I've just recently become the sole care-giver of my wife (it will eventually be terminal) and my life has turned upside-down, more than I could have ever imagined. That's the main reason I now have time to return to steady pool playing again. Friends and family come by, watch her, & give me a few hours of 'time out' to go shoot some pool. Becoming a sole care-giver has been a total life changing major event.

I assume (and hope) the personal 'sole care-giver' info about Tonkin has some level of confirmation but that does not IMO justify the poor business practices I'm reading about.

My rational is that during our active retirement years I ran a side business, used musical instruments (mostly brass), and after taking care of my outstanding customers I've had to put it on hold even though I'm sitting on a significant inventory. All of this will need some attention to be ready for sale but I just don't have the time or desire. The business is on hold, my reputation has been maintained (in that market) and if things ever return to a somewhat normal existence, whatever that is, I may return to my avocation.

I'm not sure how similar the circumstances but sometimes a person's true character exposes itself when under stress.

I guess that's a lot more than my 0.02c...

My stepmother passed from pancreatic and know what it does. My issue was it was nothing but excuses, broken promises, and on and on. Then another time he posts these cues he just built on a whim to sell. There was like 4-6 cues. They were double and triple butterfly splices. May have been more. All ebony cues, with different veneer colors. There were the flame combo, butterflies with blues, butterflies with greens, and butterflies with purples. He also listed another cue of his that was supposed in new shape and i asked him about that cue, and he told me know. He needed the money and had to sell it.
