Well, I've decided I'm not ever going to buy a Tonkin after reading these posts all over AZB. Besides, my level of play would do fine with an ~$1K + McDermott or similar cue. If a nice custom comes my way, in person, I'll consider it.
I'm making NO EXCUSE for Tonkin's actions however, I've just recently become the sole care-giver of my wife (it will eventually be terminal) and my life has turned upside-down, more than I could have ever imagined. That's the main reason I now have time to return to steady pool playing again. Friends and family come by, watch her, & give me a few hours of 'time out' to go shoot some pool. Becoming a sole care-giver has been a total life changing major event.
I assume (and hope) the personal 'sole care-giver' info about Tonkin has some level of confirmation but that does not IMO justify the poor business practices I'm reading about.
My rational is that during our active retirement years I ran a side business, used musical instruments (mostly brass), and after taking care of my outstanding customers I've had to put it on hold even though I'm sitting on a significant inventory. All of this will need some attention to be ready for sale but I just don't have the time or desire. The business is on hold, my reputation has been maintained (in that market) and if things ever return to a somewhat normal existence, whatever that is, I may return to my avocation.
I'm not sure how similar the circumstances but sometimes a person's true character exposes itself when under stress.
I guess that's a lot more than my 0.02c...
