Just watched an episode of Columbo and was delighted to see Peter Falk shooting with a very respectable stroke. Here is the episode, titled "How to Dial a Murderer", where he confronts the murderer whilst playing pool:

Can't find a free online version, perhaps someone else can, but geez, he hits a few shots that clearly show he is a good player.

Anyone know anything about his pool history?

I actually recall seeing Peter Falk playing/practicing at McGirr's in NYC back in the late sixties when I was a kid. Can't recall exactly, but he didn't look like a stranger to the room or table.

No raincoat...

He couldnt play very well, but he liked being around pool. He came into Ye Billiard Den in Hollywood, often. He was in love with Brooklyn Pancho, and had a soft spot for all the hustlers.

He played as a youngster in the Tarrytown NY area. They called him 'Petey' He was better than most his age.

I appreciate this thread. Thanks for starting it. I often watch old "Columbo" reruns. Better written and less violent than most of today's cop shows.

I'm a Columbo fan too, but I've never seen the episode. Until now! It's available on Netflix, instant streaming. Season 7, episode 4.

The pool scene is at around 1hr 3min. Pretty neat how Columbo incorporates playing a game into his interrogation. But the house cue tips they use are pretty rough; they appear to be sanded flat with zero chalk on them. And he commits the ultimate faux pas of allowing two Dobermanns to jump up on the table.

As an added bonus this episode features Tricia O'Neil, who every nerd should recognize from her role as Captain Rachel Garrett from the "Yesterday's Enterprise" episode of Star Trek TNG!

I think you are right. I remember reading a TV Guide interview with him and it took place at the pool room. The pictures that accompanied the article were of him playing pool.
 
He became friends with Ed Kelly
he admired Kelly and the way he played

once told Ed that he would gladly change places with him
Ed would have traded ,but it was impossible

I think he sweated many a game and may have even staked a few games

Eddie was one of,if not the best all around players who ever lived
He was known as Champagne Eddie Kelly

I asked him to sign some pictures for a friend of mine,he said sure I asked him to sign Champagne

We ended up getting a dictionary from another room to see how to spell it,turns out there were 2 ways

Peter Falk, a One-Pocket player?

I seem to recall Peter actually played in a major One-Pocket tourney in Reno. He didn't get very far, possiby going two-and-out. But I understand the man enjoyed playing pool.
