Phenolic color

I purchased some natural brown phenolic from a very popular supplier and the joint material seems to cut with minimal color change and once it is finsihed it has a very nice color. However the material large enough for butt caps really changes color drastically when cut from 1.38 to 1.25. It changed from Natural Brown to very Blonde and I am wondering if light, water, or heat exposure will darken the material back up. I know purpleheart and some other materials react to sunlight and heat, but I wasn't sure if there are any tricks with phenolic, or if this material just wasn't dyed deeply enough?

It will darken with the UV if you have not put a uv protective sealer on it.

Natural phenolic is exactly that, natural. Natural means they don't do anything to it concerning color. It ends up what it ends up. I've seen natural come in from very dark to very light.

If you find some that you like, and use it in a cue, either give some collar pieces to each customer when they buy a cue or keep extra for shafts and repairs later on.

We get requests almost daily to match collars that just can't be matched unless you have some of the original material.

The two pieces of phenolic in the picture are from the same stock. The brown area is full size from A supplier and then when it is cut down it turns really blonde. I know it is a rookie question, but I just didnt expect that much color change when just cutting the phenolic down to butt cap size (from 1.38 or so down to 1.25). Anyway, I will let it sit for a couple days and get some UV and see what happens...

It will likely take months for the color to go back to reddish brown.

FWIW - just because the rods both came from the same supplier
doesn't mean they came from the same "stock".

If they were made by different companies, or were even different batches,
which is very likely, the color will not be consistient.

Royce was right - matching colors on this stuff is close to impossible.

Problem is easily solved. Cut to final size, sand to finish then place in oven at 375 degrees for few hours. That will turn it browner. It can take all day with this color but the oven will get it brown. Once brown, if you cut it, you will be back to square one so it's important to be down to final.
