phenolic core

Has anyone ever used a 3/4" solid phenolic rod as a core for very light weight wood? I want to use redwood burl, which is wicked light. I assume the hit would be strange. I need to find a core that will stay straight but weigh enough for around an 18oz cue. Any comments welcome.

i saw a Varney for sale here by Kyelin that was cored with phenolic or something similar.

Redwood burl is so soft I would recomend having it resin impregnated and cored with a stronger wood. If you just core it the wood will dent very easily.

As far as I understand, Predator has implemented you're type of ide on their new but's. I have not played with any Predator so how this might feel is for me unknown..

Predator encases their weight bolt in phenolic. Not a core.
Their theory is that would dampen any buzz caused by the bolt.
Which makes me wonder why not just use a weighting system that doesn't cause any buzzing.

Is there anyone or a company that someone can recommend?

You often hear Qmakers here, talking about how they drop their shafts on concrete, to get the ones with the most solid sound. I droped a piece of phenolic rod once & it had a terrible sound. I would never want a Q, with that sound in it. Just my opinion...JER

I've never used phenolic as a core....too hard & not the "hit" for which I was looking. I have used the much softer ABS though...it comes in a fatter rod and works well for the purpose I intended. It was used totally for performance on a quality piece of wood. I would not recommend using it to try and keep soft wood straight.;)

Is that the same theory for them incasing some of the shaft inserts? They are basically a brass insert, into a larger phenolic/fiber/? insert, then into the shaft. I have one from a shaft someone busted up after a hard night rolling balls around. I'm pretty sure it's a factory shaft, and not a custom insert put into a partial blank, but still, I could be wrong there. I have worked on many that showed the black flange from the insert in the face of the shaft, so i'm guessing it's their insert work or whoever does that for them.

I only know of one guy that does this. He is in Johnstown PA. He has wood at Valley Forge sold by Wild Woods. I don't know if he would do just one piece. I think he was along the lines of doing a 10 LB batch at a time. It will take some time as he does all of the knife handles for Case.

Probably.
Brass probably sticks to phenolic better than onto wood.

Been there, done that and ran it through the band saw cause it was junk. Get the wood impregnated and use a suitable wood core.

Not cue wood................build a jewelry box with and give to wife.

<~~~loves my red burl table..........

I have used curly redwood for buttsleeves but never on a forearm...I don't think it's a good idea for such a soft wood to be used as a forearm...
