Why don't we see more of them?

Steel or brass pin into phenolic, hell, what would a phenolic pin into phenolic insert hit like?

Didn't the Omegas have a steel pin into Phenolic shaft insert?

I have been doing it for more than two years. All my cues with a 3/8-10 pin have a Phenolic insert in the shaft, and some also have a Phenolic insert in the butt, and the Pin is seated in it. In addition, I also use Phenolic inserts on 5/16 - 14, 5/16 - 18 and also for radial pins. However, I have never tried using Phenolic for the pin itself, and I don't think I will, I do no if it is durable enough, but, it might work.

Why you don't see it more often, is because I suspect that many people like to stay with more excepted concepts. But, I have never been one to stay between the lines, and all I can say is it works, it is stable, and I like it.!!!!!!

Just sent 3 cue's to asia ordered with phenolic inserts/pilots, we usually do a wood to wood pilot, but he wanted these cue's to have a different hit. Hit's well.

My brother broke the pilot on one of his shafts a year ago, I replaced it with phenolic, can't say weather or not it hit well, His cue has never hit good, and that is why I gave it to him:killingme: seriously, that is why I gave it to him. I wouldn't have sold anyone that cue for full price plus a trade in.

It's something we'll do on an order, I'm making a cue right now that is going to get phenolic inserts on a flat faced joint with a 3/8-11 pin, Buffalo joint. Can't wait to hit a few with this one

Edit, should have read more closely, Phenolic pin, humm, interesting, we've done G-10 pin into g-10 insert.

Josh actually its not phenolic but a much softer nylon.

Thanks for the correction, bub. I never really knew what the material is, I was just assuming - and you know what that leads to ;)

I don't always use them, but I've used them in all three of the standard thread sizes, and the work well. they hold threads, and glue well. I've used them in some repairs of wood threads, used them in place of brass to lighten the joint up a hair, and used them in break cues with a 3/8 pin. They have their uses, but I wouldn't say every cue should have them. Just depends on what someone is trying to achieve by using them.

Huebler cues have nylon inserts. I have put Phenolic inserts in my cues for over 10 years, but I also still use brass and no inserts. I sell the blank phenolic inserts on my cuesmith site. They are threaded on the outside 1/2"20 and just have a .230 hole inside so you can bore and tap them like you want form 5/16 pins to radial or 3/8-10. I also used to make brass insert for 3/8-16 and 3/8-10 and made a few cues with the 3/8-16, but quit using them many years ago. I have not tried the g-10 pin into phenolic insert yet.

I've been using phenolic inserts for several years now. The Predator shafts that I build for CueTecs have phen. insrts. All 'big pin' Predator shafts have phen. insrts. My own shafts use phen. insrts.
I for one find the phen. insrts to be an advancement for the big pin. It greatly enhances the hit and adds significant longevity to the shaft's threads. Those seeking a softer hit may not like this option.

Even though he mentions inserts, I think the bulk of the question is:

WHY DON'T YOU SEE CUES WITH PHENOLIC PINS, meaning a joint pin made out of phenolic.

No, sorry for the confusion, I didn't mean PINS I meant inserts in the shafts. Like instead of open wood threads or brass inserts.

I talked to Chad at CAMCUES and he does some of them for the 14 pins.

Chris WHERE are these listed on your web site?...JER

> Unless live tooling is used,I have a hard time believing phenolic rod can be cut cleanly enough to use it as a pin. That is just my personal experience using hand-ground HSS,cemented carbide,or even indexable carbide inserts to thread it. It seemed like it wanted to displace material by squashing it out of the way early in the process, even with .002 DOC,and even when I tried doing the whole thing .001 at a pass,it chipped badly. My tooling wasn't the problem either. I have a fixture that allows you to cut dead-nuts perfect 60 degree points on tooling using a surface grinder, and access to grinding wheels that allow me to grind HSS or cemented carbide to a level of sharpness that rivals pocket-knife blades, and still crappy results.

I'm all ears if someone has a secret.

I've never had a chance to try G-10,but would sure like to know how Joey Gold gets his pins so much cleaner than everyone else. Ground maybe? Not bagging on anyone, but I've seen VERY nice cues here that I thought were considerably diminished by the fact that their G-10 pins looked ROUGH,and in the case of the whitish-green version, downright dirty.
