Quezon City hosts RP vs World billiards showdown

Quezon City will host a classic showdown of the country?s top pool players against the rest of the world in a three-day duel billed ?The QC Invasion: Quezon City, Philippines vs the World, Grand Billiards Showdown? on Dec. 2-4 at the Trinoma Mall.

The event pits eight top Filipino cue artists, led by legend Efren ?Bata? Reyes, against an equally talented foreign field in a team competition with the winning squad receiving $40,000 cash purse.

Quezon City Mayor Feliciano ?Sonny? Belmonte, who led the unveiling of the event?s logo, welcomed the event as a major vehicle that will showcase Quezon City as one of the country?s top tourist destinations as well as further help promote the sports ?where we, Filipinos, are on top of the world.?

?One thing Quezon City and billiards share is both are moving forward on their way to more progress,? said Belmonte, during the press launch yesterday at Mario?s Restaurant on Tomas Morato Ave.

Belmonte was joined in the ceremony by Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista, councilors Toto Medalla and Vincent Belmonte, QC Tourism Council chairman Raffy Chico, Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines president Vic Rodriguez, BMPAP founders Perry Mariano and Jonathan Sy, Solar Sports vice-president for marketing Jude Tarcuato and members of Team QC Philippines.

?This event aims not only to showcase the skills and talents of our own players against the world?s best but also to promote Quezon City as one of the country?s leading sports-tourism destinations,? said Quezon City Council majority floor leader Ariel Inton, the chief proponent of the event supported by the Quezon City Government, the QC Tourism Council and BMPAP, with Solar Sports, RPN and The Philippine STAR as media partners.

Besides Reyes, the other members of the Team QC Philippines are fellow former world champions Alex Pagulayan and Ronnie Alcano, reigning world No.1 Dennis Orcollo, Francisco ?Django? Bustamante, 2007 World Pool runner-up Roberto Gomez, Lee Van Corteza and Warren Kiamco.

They will go up against a team led by three former world titlists in Wu Chia-ching of Chinese-Taipei, Mika Immonen of Finland and Thorsten Hohmann of Germany.

The other players of Team World are former European No.1 Konstantin Stepanov of Russia, 2006 Asian Games gold medalist Satoshi Kawabata of Japan, Yang Ching-shun of Chinese-Taipei, and Charlie William and Rodney Morris of the United States.

I'd like to make a small wager on Team Philippines. $100-500 and this window is OPEN! I do reserve the right to close it at any time, but until then a bet can be made, and will be accepted. If I don't know you I may ask you to post.

Boy I'll tell you what, looking at that lineup on the World Team is scary. Team PI must play good and have good chemistry to win this match. It ain't no lock and I am definitely gambling here.

I like Team Philippines too, for 250 $.

But the real question here is: Where are Ralf Souquet, Shane Van Boening and Niels Feijen on the Team World?

Think atleast Charlie Williams or Rodney Morris could be replaced with any of the 3 above...
 
There is so much politics in pool right now that it needs it's own National Convention so we can keep tabs on them. Johnnyt
 
I agree with both jay and Roy, but only because the current "world's" lineup isn't as strong as it can be.

If it's truly the philipines against the world (not USA), than why not pick the best players, period. The only thing I can think of is that the world team can't have more than 2 players from any one country.

I'd like to see SHANE, ralf and neils too, especially with the year he is having. And how isn't archer on that squad. It's one thingto be the best from your country (japan), but he's not #8 in the world.

My prediction, there will be, for whatever reason, 3 changes to the world squad before December. Plan accordingly with your betting now.

My Team World pick, if I could choose:

Yang, Wu, Feijen, Souquet, Van Boening, Hohmann, Archer and then Tony Drago to top it all. If Team World decided to play with this team I would reconsider my bet. (I wouldn't bet on Team World, but I wouldn't bet at all)

As long as Team World consists of the players of today, I will bet 250 $ on Team Philippines.
 
As for Team Philippines I would love to see up-and-coming Carlo Biado, or perhaps Joven Bustamante, replace Warren Kiamco.

Youngster Carlo Biado has now finished 5th, 3rd and 2nd in the last 3 Villards Cup in the Philippines, against fields of players including ALL the best in the entire Philippines... (Please correct me if I am wrong on this)

(My real wish for player number 8 on Team Philippines would be Jeffrey De Luna, but politics stops that for happening.)

Oh, and I swear to God that I won't sneak into rooms and sh#$.

SVB should be there for USA and Fiejen for Morris. But someone or somebody must have submitted those names for the world.

Reyes,Alex, Alcano, Busta and Orcollo, bloody hell, those are the giants of the game.

I am just surprised that Shanelle Loraine is not playing on Team World.

It looks like Dragon Promotions is part of this event, since Mika, Thorsten, Charlie and Rodney are all playing. (They are all members of Dragon Promotions)
 
If Shane, Ralf and Niels were on the world Team, I probably wouldn't want this bet. It is true, they could make a world team that would be the favorite. But this is still a strong team. Charlie did just win two tournaments against strong fields. There are no weak players on the world team imo.

I'm leaving the window open for a few days, and then that opportunity is gone. I have one bet now, and that's it. You know it says a lot about the Philippines when they can take on the rest of the world at pool. Only Taiwan seems able to mount a realistic challenge to their domination.

first I wanted to go for a 10-ball event, then for 9-ball. Now when it seems 9-ball is not going to be at the Philippines (if ever), so team Philippines vs team World is where I plan to go. Stepanov is invited, so that's one more reason for me.
As for the squad selection, I think it's up to organizers. Sure there are players stronger than Kosta at this moment who deserve being included in the team, but organizers want Stepanov to play. Same goes with everyone selected I believe.

Or maybe... these players enjoy coming to the Philippines more than all the others who where sent invites so they immediately responded. We all may have our own favourite players but if the organizer and the player doesn't agree on the terms then these players can't be part of the event. It wasn't at all the fault of the organizer if he can't afford some player's appearance fee. At least the organizer didn't react like BSCP when Alex asked for an appearance fee to participate in Makabenta's private promotion The Pool Showdown. Alex Pagulayan was banned from BSCP events and the Guinness Tour Philippine representation based on trumped-up charges of "sharking".:eek: Aside from the other participating players not receiving the promised 3k Pesos/episode travel and food allowance.:eek: :eek:
 
The unhappy posters need not worry. This line up is only for 2008.

For next year, we can come up with a Poll in this forum to select the most poplular players... of course depending on their availability.

As for now, this event is all set. Let's all hope things turn out right for WPC to happen this year too! No promises, but things are looking good.
 
You heard it guys, the line-up is set (unless of course, someone cancels then the organizer will find a replacement). The event has a date and it all ready to go. Book you flights and make your bets. See you all.
