Good afternoon all,

Well, after a very long wait, my family and I are finally moved into the new homestead. I wouldn't say that we are settled just yet as the house is in a bit of a mess. Kingston seems like a very nice city with lot's to do so we may just call this our permanent home.

One big hurtle out of the way for the new pad is, you guessed it, my new pool table is here!!!!! As this is my very first pool table I thought I would show some pictures of the set up and finished product. It is a 41/2 by 9 foot Black Night with Simonis 860 (Tournament Blue) cloth. The pictures don't do it justice unfortunately :( my apologies.

You don't see too many 9' tables with the D marked on it. Plan on playing snooker?

Actually, I came down stairs to the rec room to have a look when it was nearly done and they had already put these markings on the table? I have never played on a table with the D marked on the table, not sure what it is even for? I only play 9 ball, 10 ball, 8 ball and some straight pool. I would like to get into one pocket at some point.

Cheers.

the D is used in snooker. It's an awesome game. You should check it out. It's very easy to learn. It doesn't look like you have snooker cushions on that table so I don't know why they would draw a D on it. Weird. I guess they just assumed you were gonna play snooker on it.

Did they also put marks on the table for the other colors?

There should be one behind the rack and one just above the rack also. There should also be a mark in the very center of the table for a color.

I think you will enjoy one pocket a lot once you learn the moves and strategy. I picked the game up a few years ago and unfortunately I only have one place where I can find some one pocket games here in town.

I like the size of your table pockets and they look like you'll enjoy playing on the table. I don't care for real tight tables because it takes some of the fun out of playing with friends and practicing. I like to hit balls with authority and real tight pockets will not take some shots that your pocket size will.

hey nice looknig table.

In the picture with the two balls in the pocket, the right side of the pocket looks to be rounded, opposed to the left which looks to be cut in at an angle like standard tables.
Is it just a funny picture angle?

Thank you Jim. The pockets on my table are quite large. Is there a way I can make the pockets smaller/tighter for more precision without having to be a large project bringing in table mechanics and such?

Thanks.

good catch. also curious.

Congratulations

Thanks for sharing and the cool pics. Sound like a great place to live and you will have some good times with that nice table.

At a much closer inspection of the pockets on the table, they are all cut at an angle. The lens I was using must have made it appear rounded. :)

If you want to make them smaller/tighter you have to bring in a mechnic or fitter. There are some gaff devices you can buy to make them tighter but they are horrible and dont work. there are 2 ways to make them tighter the correct way:

1. take the rails off then tak the cloth off the rails and glue shims on the ends of the rubber part and re-cover the rails, put them back on the table. This is the least deseriable way of the 2 to tighten your pockets CORRECTLY.

2. It to take the rails off, throw away the rubber cushions and replace them with longer pieves of rubber cushions and recover them and put the rails back on your table, this method is by far the best method of tightning pockets.

thats the short description of what to do, why the guys who installed your table didnt go over this with you is what I'm wondering, its their duty to ask you how tight you want your pockets, and why they marked it as a snooker table with out your asking or concent is BS too. Who ever did your table made alot of assumptions for you, and they assumed alot of wrong things, your a pool player, not a snooker player. As far as pocket size its your choice and dosent sound like you hada choice. Shame on them!!

The answer is .....MAYBE.
You might be able to replace the pocket facings with thicker facings and close the pocket up a bit. The facings on the table now are likely either 1/16" or 1/8". Installing 3/16" soft rubber facings would close the pocket up. The questions are 1) how mechanically inclined are you, 2) how much extra cloth is there covering the facings now, 3) do you have a box cutter and a industrial type staple gun? There is plenty of info on the mechanics section of AZB about facings.

Snooker on a 9 foot pool table is a better game than 9-ball or 8-ball (IMO :D) and many Canadian tables are marked up for snooker.

Americans have this strange idea that snooker can only be played on a 12 foot snooker table, and therefore never try the game.

22 snooker balls on a 9 foot table is less congested than pool on a barbox.

Yeah, the D suggests that the table was being marked for snooker. The D is the equivalent of the kitchen: you start a game of snooker with the cue ball in the D, and the cue ball returns to the D if it scratches into a pocket (but NOT on "table scratches" where you simply miss the object ball).

Scaramouche makes a good point: you can play snooker on any table. I don't live close enough to a snooker table to play on one regularly, so I'll sometimes bring a set of Aramith snooker balls to my local pool room to play on the 9-footers.

If you want to see a snooker table in person, check out the listings in the website below for the table nearest you.

Congrats on your new table, and good luck.

Don't vaccum the table... ever, or you'll have little plaster bumps from the seams spread all over the slate under the cloth, creating them nice little speed bumps everywhere under the bed cloth;)

That D is also the tee box for golf. I love that game. When you can run out golf your ready to play sum.

Nice, I'd leave the pockets. When you get to running 200 at straights, then they may need to be tightened up to challenge you.
