Pinball Machines in pool rooms

Are there any more pinball machines around the country? You know, the ones with 20 holes or 25 holes that pay off games which you can cash in for money. Used to be nickel games but there are some dime games and maybe a quarter game or so I've heard.

I used to travel from Jackson, MS to Memphis, TN just to gamble in new territory.

Once upon a time, Mike Brewer of New Orleans told me that in Vegas, they had one dollar per game pinball machines. He said they were in the bars, not the pool rooms. Shortly thereafter I took a vacation business trip to Las Vegas to make my fortune. I road in more taxis and saw more bars than I did in New Orleans. Not one of them had a dollar per game pinball machine. The pinball machines they did have were bolted to non movable structures at the back of the pinball machine. They were so tight up against the wall, if you tried to move the ball by hitting the front of the machine you could easily break bones as you were basically trying to move a cement wall. :) Even those machines were only nickel machines.

I think someone mentioned that MS still had the machines and that they paid off. Does Memphis have the pin ball machines or any other locations around the country and can strangers get paid if they win?

Joey,

You're a regular hustler aren't you. You've got lots of moves. :)

I used to be a quasi-hustler.

Now I just take off those who come looking for me. :)

Left handed, Mike Brewer? Nuff said, LOL. No one on earth looked more perfect at the table than Mike. Stroke looked like Sigel's.

I think Mike heard rumors of $1 machines in Vegas, as I did. I also looked and asked while there and nothing of the kind seems to exist. Headrick, got rid of his 25 hole dime machine here. Seems everyone was winning, even me. He was surprised you didn't show up for the others in the area. What gives?

Bill, I guess I've given up on hustling and am just waiting for the GinberBread Man's legs to slow up long enough so I can enjoy a meal. :)

Tell Bobby I said hi.

With regular players the income is amazing. You can bet progressivly (up
to 5 coins) to increase the payoff odds. I had 4 0f them in my little 8
table joint in San Jose. That was the max. allowed per license then.
They were just nickel machines, but they used to pay my rent and
utilities, and I only got half the take! That might not cut it in todays
economy. I doubt they're legal any where now except maybe Nev. Also a full time job to keep the cheats away.
Had to keep the tilt real sensitive.

somone awhile ago mentioned these machines before, and a long discussion in that thread ensued. They seem interesting, I think someone posted a picture of one too.

The machines I used to play you could put in as many coins as you wanted. It never got full and the more coins you put in, the more likely it was to give you better odds but FIVE coins?

The pinball machines here in New Orleans kept many a pool room, bar or restaurant open and people would come in after working all week long and sit there and play the machine until their paycheck was gone. And yes, if you didn't keep the tilt real sensitive, I beat 'em. Oh yeah, the machine had to give decent odds too. :D

I tried everything to beat them. Sometimes the owners of the establishment would just let me try practically anything because they didn't think the machines could be beat and would turn a blind eye toward me when I tried something really stupid like, slipping my toes under the front two legs of the machine to make the ball travel more slowly. These machines were so heavy they would crush my toes, so I would wear extra large shoes and just let the machine sit on the front part of my shoes without crushing my toes. That slowed the ball movement up a great deal but didn't really make me a better player. What made me a good player was my mongoose-like reflexes. I could strike a machine with lightning fast hits that could even dislodge balls already sitting in the hole (if the tilt wasn't set too light) :) The bouncing ball could be manipulated the same way into holes that you wanted them to lodge in.

When I would play the machines and beat them fairly regularly, the bar room owners would tell the machine route operator/owner and he would come out and either tighten up the odds or make the machine tilt easier, then I would quit and the rest of the locals would pitch a fit with the owner and then the owner of the establishment would call out the pinball machine owner and tell them no one was playing their machines, then they would come out and loosen up the odds and make it harder to tilt. (God, that Travis Trotter virus must be going around) The cycle would then start all over. I tried not to be too greedy but those machine owners didn't like anyone to beat them, ever. :p

I've got one of those machines in my basement. Paypal me some money and I will put it in the machine for you and let you know if you win.
