Placing Inserts in shafts

Hey buddy. You may be able to tell the difference. In my mind I feel it does make them hit slightly stiffer. That being said...if you were blind folded and tested one of each, I doubt you could tell a difference. No real cons to doing it. The only thing I can think of is depending on the o.d. of the insert it does make the wood thinner around the insert. I have seen one exploded from breaking, right at that point...but he was bending the cue while breaking and it popped at the weak spot. I'd keep the o.d. of the insert down to the minimum you can get by with boring & tapping. The pro is that it makes the threads pretty much bullet proof and you don't have to worry about ever stripping them out. I prefer purpleheart , alves or bocote...any of the 3 make wonderful inserts for a big pin. Hope I've helped.:smile:
Before modifying or adding shaft inserts, I would recommend changing your ferrule and tip combination. Assuming that you already use a tip that you love, and don't want to change it, just change the ferrule. If you want a firmer hit, try a Titan ferrule. You will be able to feel the change.

If you want firmer go with an old LBM ferrule or the newer Ivorine 4. Combined with a Superpro tip & thats about as firm as is playable.:wink:
I am pretty much dead set on only using Kamui Hard tips, and ivorine 4, Elfloryian?, Ageis and Juma ferrules.
I am just curious, I have one cue that has the inserts and plays lights out and one that is almost the exact same thing and it hits totally different.
I just don't see how something this small could make such a huge difference in the hit and yes I know "the hit" is very subjective to each player's opinion.

Sounds like what you are noticing is the difference in wood. I can make two shafts with exact same specs & parts...but one will hit better than the other. Why you ask, if parts (same diameter, same taper,tip & ferrule) used are the same. Wood "tone" and density. You often simply have two different tone shafts. Weigh them is the first clue. Many of the better cue makers try to not only match shafts by weight...but also by bouncing them off a hard surface & listening to the tone. Different sounding shafts will most definately play different...even if all else is the same. If they sound the same...they play the same. Would there be any difference if they were put into say a Flat Lam or Pie spliced shaft. Or a Flat Lam/Pie spliced shaft. I am am experimenting with a new shaft style and want to make it as strong as possible. The test cue has a .822" joint no collar.

The material is not as much of a factor than the taper itself I think.
If you are going to have an .822 sized collar, you can afford to have a soft angle from the collar down maybe 6-12 inches from the collar. That will stiffen the joint end.
You will then have to match that taper as closely as possible with the forearm's taper imo.
Frankly, I don't get why the collar would be smaller than .835".
