I saw an interesting thing tonight related to the player auction. What is the proper percentage to give a player u buy in the calcutta if they give no money?

0 to 25% is relatively common. In general, there are two schools of thought. One school of thought is that they are not entitled to one cent (and they aren't), and therefore they don't give them a cent. The player didn't assume any of the risk (and in fact made the conscious decision NOT to invest in themselves), and therefore they are not entitled to any of the profit.

The other school of thought is that even though the player technically is not entitled to anything, they give them a jelly roll anyway in the hopes of building good rapport or a relationship with the player, or to ensure future "good vibes" in their betting, kind of like when you tip the dealer in Las Vegas.

In cases where they give something to the player, it is generally around 10%, but can vary based on how much money they won, how much they like the player, how much they think it will make the player like them or will allow them to "get in good" with the player, what kind of mood they are in, etc.

The short answer is nothing is owed to the player, and it is up to you if you want to give them something anyway.

Man that depends on alot of variables brother like; quality of competition/player pedigree/cost of horse/Total $$ in calcutta/how much you hate money etc....

Heres something that you should never do IMOP, or may the pool gods strike you dead where you stand.

I've seen guys buy half themselves for 350 and going on to take off 4k in the calcutta....each got 2k, the guy who bought the player wins 2k off of 350 and then jelly rolls the player $30!

I know I know...the OUTRAGE!

In that situation the guy should have at least thrown his horse at least a couple hundred. (which just so happens to be 10%)

Basically the higher the amount paid initially the less % the player will end up with. In smaller buys like someone for $50 that wins say $500 your looking at getting a bigger chunk % wise just going off the trend I usually have seen.

This is just going by people that were buying players without previous deals with them. When they win I usually see/hear at least 10% on average.

Take the same guy and he straight burns through the tournament, you generally bonus the player a little extra jelly for his bread sandwich.

If you paid alot for someone thats supposedly a shoe in and they go off air almost ruin your finances with bad nail biting play but still get there....then your high blood pressure may force you to knock a few % points off the reward.

Honestly your not entitled to give them anything of your winnings, its just un-gentleman like and can get you branded with the dreaded "N" word.....NIT lol

Even if you really need the money I think that 10% is a good general rule to go by.....if they are getting 30% they are either a world beater or have been living in high cotton lol.

Remember 20-30% is a really big chunk of your money just to put things in relation, how much money does the government take out of your checks? About 30% and we feel like were getting raped. Your taking all the risk, the player has to earn their reward.

Some people have the silly notion that they deserve some big number, they forget that worker bees are not supposed to make what the boss does....and when you buy a player you just invested money in your "buisness"

If you handle it like business then everything works out much better.

hope that helps,
Grey Ghost

That is the San Antonio way of thinking, where men are men and sheep are very nervous!

Also remember Ghost that a lot of times a player can only afford to put themselves in the tournament and pay the greens fee or quarters, so when you get IMHO stupid amounts for players like some tournaments in the South, then a player has no choice but to not do anything but concentrate on winning the tournament.

Remember the calcutta doesn't exist without the player, the player can exist with out the calcutta.

maybe the player can existwithout the calcutta. True enough, but, often the tournament can't exist without the calcutta.
take a goodlook at the tournament in Lafayette La 3 times each year.If it weren't for the calcutta, i doubt they would have 50 playersinstead of it's normal 120-128. the players who go for the "Stupid amounts" as you put it are the very one's who make this tournament so attractive to so many.
The same case might be made for the one in Mobile as well!
most who pay the "stupid amounts" have been around the block and are pretty generous when they cash. When they do tip or jelly roll as most like to say, the players appreciate it and know they can depend on them to treat them decently! They will always play harder for them!

So when the player is playing for a prizeof say $1000 and someone has bought him for say $1200 and the calcutta pays $7500, he can usually figure whe willmake about {with the jelly} about $1900 vs the $1000 for the tournament. The 15% show support from the "stupid buyers" and givesthe player much more motivation!

Those who don't Jelly the player, are, NITS!

Jelly roll whatever you can IMO. I know Ive had guys win the tourney that I buy in the calcutta and Im still loser for the weekend. IMO you jelly off the extra, everyone smart always takes into account expenses.
