It depends on the criteria. Ralf is ahead if you count 9/10 ball, but the title is "Player of the decade".

Efren is far ahead of Ralf as an all-around player. Let's evaluate in terms of level of play (who would be the odds favorite despite the fact Ralf doesn't gamble).

9/10 ball - Ralf all day long
Rotation - Efren
1p - Efren (by a large margin)
8 ball - Ralf Souquet
Banks - Efren by slight margin. Who cares it's banks.
Straight Pool - Ralf Souquet
Carom - Are you serious? Then you must add snooker too.

This is not to knock Ralf, but this is not 9/10 ball player of the decade. No one will play Efren even 1 pocket, I believe a few would try Ralf at his game.

I fixed this for you...

I fixed this for you...

i cant see anything beating effren in this decade. He won the most money. Where ever the money is where the best players are. Effren wins in 3 cush against ralf, and like to venture that he could keep up in a snooker dept, much less win in banks. BUT we were talking pool players not snooker and 3cush anyways...

It doesn't even matter and it's no knocking anyones accomplishments, but you just can't over look that effren took down the cash when it mattered most. None of these guys play for trophies.

I also think its Efren hands down. Look at the money earnings posted of Efren earlier in this thread. He was in the top 3 for half the decade, and #1 in many of those years. Only in the last 3 years of the decade did he slip, but save for 2008, he was still top 30 males in that list.

Ralf or Mika can't touch that.

I have no clue how anyone could possibly think Souquet gets player of the decade over Efren.

Efren plays every game and beats everyone for the cash.

Earnings for the decade from tournament play for each player:

Ralf Souquet: $792,152

Efren Reyes: $1,663,928

That's right... Efren has earned almost 1 MILLION MORE than Ralf in tournaments alone.

If they played each other 100 sets each year playing all games for the past decade who do you think would be ahead?

Has Ralf even ever won a one-pocket event??!!

What else needs to be said?

Maybe I'm just crazy but it's not even close in my opinion.

Here is Efren's money finish of top 30 male players this decade:

2000: 2nd
2001: 1st
2002: 1st
2003: 3rd
2004: 1st
2005: 1st
2006: 1st
2007: 11th
2008: didn't make top 30
2009: 21st

That is five #1 finishes, one #2 finish, one #3 finish. How can anyone argue Efren is not the player of the decade? Also, as mentioned for Soquet, I'm sure there are many tournaments Efren cashed in in Asia that were not reported on AZ.

You can also be sure of one thing with Efren. He played in all the major tournaments that were HIGH dollar events. And he won nearly every one.

He also COMPLETELY dominated one pocket. No player this decade except Efren had dominated ANY discipline. The only way for a player to dominate a discipline for so many consecutive years is to be in a completely different and unimaginable level in that discipline. Efren is.

This isn't just about winnings, not to mention 1 tournament that Efren won was worth $500K.

Ralf has just been way more consistent then Efren. Everytime this man enters a tournament hes always there at the end of the tournament. Especially in these tough 10ball tournaments that are now becoming the main game to determine the top players nowadays.

Ralf travels way more than Efren, gets himself into every major tournament out there.

The only major one pocket tournament that I know of is the DCC and it's a race to 3 which is anybodies game. You can't compare the one pocket competition to the 10ball/9ball, it's not even close.

I disagree on the 1 pocket analogy. Being a short race to 3 means its easier for the weaker player to win. For Efren to have dominated the DCC 4 straight years is a feat unheard of. Him having done it with a short race to 3 makes it even more impressive, than if the races were long 1 hole races to 7.

even still with those figures effren still made 500k more than him without the 500k you mentioned. Maybe ralph needs to learn to be more efficient with all that traveling....kinda like effren lol, just show up and take the money....

No wonder they call him the magician,

Keep that $500k.. as a matter of fact take that entire year from Efren and he still wins more tournament money.

More consistent than Efren? Are you serious? Efren has been one of the best pool players in the world for the past 30 years.

Ralf travels way more than Efren, gets himself into every major tournament out there.

And still made less than half the money Efren did in tournaments!

Then why are the same players in the winners circle year after year?!

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Efren plays ALL GAMES WELL!!!

Even if this were for 9-ball player of the decade Efren would still win but it's not, it's POOL PLAYER of the decade.

Ralf couldn't beat Efren in tournament winnings.

Ralf couldn't beat Efren gambling.

Ralf couldn't beat Efren in all games.

Ask any pro who they would rather gamble or play against in a tournament all decade long to make their living and they would all say they would have a better chance against Ralf.

Thanks to fix this poll up:grin:

I just want to add that I think that when it comes to nominate the player of the DECADE (2000-2010), I mean the WHOLE decade, WU, Strickland, Deuel, SVB and Pagulayan have not to be on that list.

Good point from the start billbOK!

Why list players in the poll who doesn't have any reasonable reason to be there?

After Mika, Efren and Souquet, the next to deserve the place is Thorsten Hohmann, then Pagulayan, and then Alcano. And even those three, not necessary, maybe worth mentioning, but not competing from the first price.

The only discussion when competing from the *Player of the Decade*, is around Mika, Efren and Ralf.

Mika has most Majors, Ralf is most consistent, Efren has most Money.

I think it's a toss-up between Reyes and Souquet. In terms of money won, Reyes should win it hands down. In terms of consistent performance in major tournaments, Souquet should win it hands down.

Immonen definitely wins best player the last 2-3 years, but he comes in third for POTD behind Reyes and Souquet IMO.

But if I had to vote, I'd vote Souquet. The pool world owes Souquet an honor such as this, for his consistency and professionalism.

Where are you getting this "last 2-3 years"? Out from ingorance?

Mika has been inform, and at the same time Best in the World, last 13 months, that's bit over a year. Before that, he was out of Top 10 for about 5 years.

But, in the early years of this Decade, he was in Top 5 then again.

Still, eventhough those lesser five years in the middle, Mika has won more Majors than Ralf or Efren, hands down.

There are two Majors in the year, which are way above all the others.

That is WPA 9-Ball WC (now 10-B) and 9-Ball US.Open.

Mika has won 4 of those.

Ralf 1.

Efren 0.

Efren won the biggest ever tournaments, like the 9-Ball tournament in Japan 2001, where he scored 165000$, and also the amazin two-out-of-three IPT tourneys.
That's why he outclasses Souquet.

But, what it comes to prestigiousness, WPA Majors are bigger than controversial IPT tourneys.
That's where and when Mika outclasses Efren.

Thorsten deserves extra mention, as he won the WPA 9-Ball WC, WPA 14.1. WC, and IPT N/A Open + China Open (also 40 000$) and few more big ones, and made amazing World Record in Straight Pool, winning the European Championships (which is actually tougher tournament in Straight Pool than the 14.1. World Championships) in 2005, with 50 points average, and that was including safeties!!!

It's ridiculous in these kind of polls, when people vote for "Archer" or "SVB" or "Deuel", without any kind of perspective and objectiveness.
The question wasn't "who is your favourite player?", nor "who would you wish to win?"
It was about who desereves the be the Player of the Decade.

I'll give you a diagram, where 100 points is divided for the five best players of this Decade. If you want more argumentations, there are, I promise you. :)

#1. Mika Immonen 32 points

#2. Efren Reyes 28 points

#3. Ralf Souquet 24 points

#4. Thorsten Hohmann 12 points

#5. Alex Pagulayan 4 points

bubbling under:

#6. Ronnie Alcano

#7. Chia Ching Wu

#8. Dennis Orcullo

#9. Shane Van Boening

#10. Corey Deuel

Bustamante, Yang and Archer slightly missing the list because no bigger Major wins, Chao because too many 'lazy' years.

wrong. The AZ Billiards money list doesn't include most of the Euro tourneys that Ralf plays in and wins. If you'll scroll back a page Roy outlines this in detail.

How can you possible vote against this man (Ralf) for the title "Player of the DECADE?"

Because, the Majors, and the WINS in them, counts so much.

Ralf is the most consistent and dedicated sure, maybe won more tournaments than Mika, but Mika won so many more Majors, that he's the man.

See upper post for reasoning.

Sorry Roy

add up all the cashes for 15K or more over the last decade that Ralf and Mika had and then get back to me. Ralf > Mika.

Heh, but to win in Euro Tour, gives you 7500$. To win in IPT Reno gave Efren 500 000$, in Orlando 200 000$, in 9-Ball Japan 165000$.

Wins in Europe are not in the same cathegory. Unfortunately.

And btw, there was about 5 years period, Ralf didn't win a single Euro Tour, in this Decade.

Hmmm, not sure exactly what your gripe is about what I said. I said there is no question that Mika is the best player the last 2-3 years. So you probably think Mika is the best player the last 10 years. That's your opinion (and the point of this thread), but as I documented in my first post there is about a million different reasons ($) why Efren alone can be argued over Mika as player of the decade.

That said, I would still vote for Souquet, with Efren second and Mika third.

I would count the big IPT events as "majors" (World 8-ball, North American 8-ball, KOTH), and of that Efren won 2 of those. He also won the WPC World 8-Ball in 2004 I believe (Ralf won one too over Alcano, I think).

And I would also consider the "Master of the Table" award at DCC a major itself as well, and Efren won about 3-4 of those. Mika and Ralf (I correct me if I'm wrong) haven't been close to winning one of those.

All that said, I'd still vote for Ralf.
