Player of the Year 2009

Glen Atwell's sweep in Las Vegas this year and doing something NO ONE has ever done by being in all THREE finals and winning first in one and second in two others OVER names like, Appleton and others deserves Player of the Year in my opinion.

Now, I am sure people will flame me or say Glenn who? But consider this, over a week, he player better than Appleton over four or five days in three different games and Appleton, is arguably one of the strongest this year over the other names such as Ralf and others. And it cannot be disputed......

NO ONE has ever in the history beein in all three finals of the US Bar Table Championships in the history!

Flame on!

No flame here. I just think it's early to be thinking of player of the year whoever it may be. That is impressive though and something I was not aware of.

Ralf may very well be player of the decade when all is said and done but then again, there you have to take Efren in to consideration also. Tough competition.

Souquet cleaned his clock, 11-4, in the final of the World Games earlier today.

This is not to suggest that Yang is not among the most elite, for he obviously is, but your suggestion that he'd be having his way with the biggest stars of today given the opportunity does not stand up to scrutiny on this occasion.

I did not mean for my statement to seem as though I meant Yang was unbeatable. My point was only that he has two top two finishes and those are the only two tournaments he played. Anyone can win at this level over another player in a short race (not saying Souqet can't win in a long one either), but I will take Yang against any player you pick in any tournament he plays for minimum $100.

If Chia-Ching Wu, Dennis Orcullo, Ralf Souquet and Ronato Alcano plays the same tournament I have a hard time figuring out who to bet on, but I will bet with you :)

Ralf Souquet is without a doubt the player of the decade in my eyes. As far as player of the year, it's still too early to pick because a lot can happen in the second half of the year but I'd say Souquet is in the lead.

More than half of 2009 is in the books, so who is in the "lead" so far for the prestigous title "Player of the Year 2009"?

What major tournaments do you think InsidePool uses for their calculation and summary to decide who it will be?

My suggestions:

DCC 9-ball: Shane Van Boening, Van Corteza 2nd
Turning Stone Classic XII: Ralf Souquet, Hatch 2nd
World Pool Masters: Darren Appleton, van den Berg 2nd
Qatar 9-ball Open: Mika Immonen, Ko 2nd
Predator 10-ball: Dennis Orcullo, Souquet 2nd
Philippine 10-ball Open: Ricky Yang, De Luna 2nd
Pro 10-ball Expo: John Schmidt, Deuel 2nd
China 9-ball Open: Thorsten Hohmann, Feijen 2nd
World Games: Souquet vs Yang in the final playing right now
Million Dollar 9-ball:
Galveston:
US Open:
World 14-1 Championship:
World Ten Ball Championship:
All Japan Championship:
WPA-ranking: Darren Appleton is currently the #1, Souquet 2nd

Tournaments/rankings that I believe can add value if very close race between players:

Eurotour-ranking: Ralf Souquet current #1, Feijen 2nd
BCA-ranking: Johnny Archer #1, Immonen 2nd
DCC 10-ball Challenge: Lee Van Corteza, Souquet 2nd
US Bar Table Overall: Glen Atwell, Appleton 2nd
DCC Master of the table: Brumback, Hennessee 2nd
World Cup of Pool (teams):
European Championships 9-ball : Nick van den Berg, Ruslan 2nd
European Championships 14-1 : Dimitri Jungo, Feijen 2nd
European Championships 8-ball : Andreas Roschkowsky, Ekonomopoulos 2nd

So far I can't see anyone dominate the first half of 2009, but Souquet has some very good finishes in all tournaments, plus he is so far ranked #3rd on the BCA-ranking. Very small (tiny) favourite so far, imo.

Should there be other tournaments added to the list? Please come with your suggestions

Good stuff there Roy, as per usual from you. Very interesting topic also.

All the years big events are still to come, so picking a Player of the Year seems pretty unrealistic.

Player of the Decade is another story. I'd say Ralf has a lock on that one, including my personal vote (which has no merit whatsoever :D)

Add in Po-Cheng Kuo, Jung-Ling Chang, Jian-Bo Fu, Pin-Yi Ko, Roberto Gomez and Jeff DeLuna to the list of "can win any tournament at any time now" players.

What a shame that the San Miguel Asian 9 Ball Tour that morphed into the Guiness 9 Ball tour folded up! On the Guiness tour (Apr 2007-Oct 2008), during the 12 tournaments played, Jung-Ling Chang won 6 of them and Ching Shun Yang won 4 of them! This being over fields that included most of the already named players and also including Fong Pang Chao, Ricky Yang, Alex Pagulayan, Dennis Orcollo, etc.

There are some really, really great players in their prime right now and major tournaments seem to be fewer and farther between now. What a shame that we'll miss out on so many potentially great match ups.

PS-Iba7467 may be young compared to some of us old geezers, but he DOES know what he talks about when he speaks of money match ups and gauging a players speed. And Ching Shun Yang is a very bad man! He plays money matches better than he does tournaments, but he's still a viable threat to win anything he enters. IF he has any strikes against him, it's his relatively poor showings in the World 9 Ball Championships. Exited those much earlier than expected.

Still, like Roy, I would take the field against Yang nowadays, considering the aforementioned players and their exceptional talents. But Iba7467, I'm not mad enough at my money to bet YOU, my friend!

There is still a lot of pool in 2009
yup, we are just about to cross the equator of the year. Darren has some votes for winning the Masters. Ralf won enough already as well, Predator 10-Ball finals, World Games... Schmidt to consider as well. Don't forget we have World Cup of Pool, 10-Ball Worlds and MOSCONI CUP which should make the difference.

I though it was about time to bump this thread, and I've edited the results in the last tournaments.

As of now, I believe Mika is the favourite to win the Player of the Year.

Mika is a lock. There's no way around it after the big wins in Quatar, Galveston, US Open, and his money earnings on the year. Even if he were to get last place in all remaining events, he would still win.

The better question now, is who will be player of the Decade? Ralf, or Mika?
