Buy the Predator app for your phone, $4.99, it measures CB break speed. Break with your break cue, then your playing cue. I think you'll find almost no difference, 5% or so. Playing cue might even move the CB faster. It's all about technique. Technique can improve CB speed 50% or so.

Hohmann's break in this Video in my opinion is not really a hard break. As far as that other link you posted i have always heard the same thing about joint damage and inlays becoming lose.

With the way I break, i will never use my playing cue as a break cue, i will not take that chance since my joint is Ivory and Silver.

Shane has a break cue. He was using it for the MIH 8ball & also used it at the MIH 10ball last time around.

Corey Duel was using his shooting cue to break at the MIH 8ball.

See, I have an ivory jointed cue with an ivory ferrule (and butt) by Carmeli and I have been breaking with it for years.
Never had any problems. 8 and 9 ball.

Maybe I need to stop before it's too late.

I think it makes my tip too hard.

All joking aside...isn't that just something that would happen over time anyway?
Meaning, breaking with a break cue isn't going to prevent a playing cue's tip get hard over time. Often times power strokes during play can be close to break speed.
So why not just get it hard and then at least you're consistent?

In your case it worked out well as far as your joint goes, but I have a good size Silver ring with my Ivory joint and would rather not take a chance and knock the ring lose on it.

Sometimes I play with my break cue.

Going to try that next time i practice, i do how ever shoot balls with my jump cue, not jumping just shoot them just using center CB as much as possible.

I always break with my player in competition, an old McDermott D19 with a G-Core and Tiger tip. At home practicing on my big table I usually use a different cue for breaking, but rarely my Phenolic tipped break cue because I lose too much cue ball control with it. I want the QB dead center of the table after every break, that is much more important than speed to me. I usually pocket a ball on the break so I dont see a need to increase speed, I break at 20-21 MPH on my big table, probably 15-16 MPH on my little table but I never measured my small table break. As far as my tip getting harder from breaking I like my tip when its older and harder. I dont think you need a break cue, especially on 7' tables, whats next, special table length draw and stop shot cues? Some of those shots can be almost as hard as a break.:eek::eek:

I'm not fully aware of what the pros do but I'll share my thoughts. First off I prefer to break with my playing cue. I had a fairly long layoff and formerly played and broke with a Southwest. I never had any problems and my break is on the strong side. I do think breaking with your playing cue does affect the tip though.

Since I've returned to playing I'm currently using a Sly with an ivory joint and ferules and breaking with a Blackcreek sneaky. I fear damaging the Sly even though Billy Stroud didn't see a problem with breaking with an ivory feruled Josswest I was playing with once upon a time. If I go back to a phenolic type joint and ferule I'll probably start breaking with my player again. Then if I continue to like the way the Blackcreek breaks maybe I'll stick with it.

Some times

I break with my Diviney playing cues about half the time and Pat's break cue the other half. They are all stainless radial pin sneaky pete cues with Lake Salvage shafts.

I don't break hard enough to hurt them.

My Michigan buddy recently broke another break cue, shattered the ferrule and shaft.

He also broke a cue ball into 3 pieces one time. I would not want him breaking with my players.

I haven't got enough break-power to worry about damaging the cue... But I use a soft to medium tip and breaking misshapes them over time.
I have seen a couple of cue balls get broken (by other people) I don't want that kind of stress on my cue.

On one old Accu-stats one pocket match, where Grady was playing, the commentator was pointing out that Grady was using a break cue, for one pocket! ha ha

cuemaker says, "...you can break with that cue, i guarantee it will not warp or damage the joints." true enough.
