OK so maybe not if you compare like times but...

I was always curious how much I walked when I used to play snooker 8 hours a day. Based a rough estimate I think it was somewhere between 0.5-1km per hour, thats a lot of walking!

Well I just did a quick google and according to this site, Billiards burns over 200 calories (depending on body weight) an hour assuming playing with a pertner. I would assume that its more like 300 if yourr playing solo and intensly. Therefore a four hour session burns approx 1000 calories!!!

To put it into perspective you would need to do the following to burn the same amount of calroeis as 4 hours of solo pool practice:

2 HOURS of Scrubbing floors, on hands and knees!
2 HOURS of Boxing, punching bag
2 HOURS of Fencing (need a lot of land :p )

Now call me a lazy bar steward but God I love pool!

:D

Last week, I saw a Calorie chart for various exercises and tried to make an educated guess as to what playing pool would burn up. Walking burns up about 250 calories an hour, so I'm guessing that playing pool burns up about 200 calories an hour. Keep in mind that playing pool has a lot of pauses while the player considers their next shot. Playing with a partner also slows the burn rate.

Allen :)

I suspect all of your guesses are wrong

One thing that isn't being considered is that people have lost as much as seven pounds in one day playing a chess match. The brain can burn a lot of calories all by itself. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that playing pool burns more calories than walking.

OK, I Googled the web to see if I can find anything on what playing chess will burn up but I wasn't able to find anything. However, I did find two other activities that require "intense thinking": Playing Cards burns up 137 calories an hour (for a 175 pound male). Playing the Piano burns 121 calories an hour. Taking a stroll burns up 242 calories an hour. In the absense of anything more definitive, I still think that playing pool burns up something on the order of 200 calories an hour.

oogling the waitress at the pool hall burns more calories than playing pool.

pedometer

If anyone cares or wants to do the calculation on this data...

I've played about 3.5 hours of pool with a relatively cheap pedometer. I walked about 11,500 steps.....

I'ts good to see a thread on this.

While walking around the table may burn calories, its still not even close to comparable to lifting weights, or any other strenuous exercise in the fact that they all give increased metabloism for hours, also its repetitive motion so your body gets used to it thus burning less calories as it becomes more efficent. Which is also probably why you see alot of overweight pool players.

It probably doesn't help that these overweight pool players don't have great eating habits to begin with, which probably counters any good that pool does for you.

But I'm not surprised that pool does burn calories. When I worked in retail I was required at my job to stand for 8-9 hours a day 40 hours a week with one half hour break each day. As a result I lost alot of weight during my summers when I worked these hours, even though I ate crap every day.

For a 200 pound person, playing billiards for an hour burns 228 calories. Don't believe me? Use this handy calorie burn estimator for virtually any activity:

http://www.healthstatus.com/cbc.html

In reality, playing billiards requires very little energy. Housework will burn 268 calories, brushing your teeth 228, sexual foreplay 132, studying 168, and sleeping will burn 84 calories.

Obviously, with these facts at hand, it is apparent why the really good pool players don't do housework, sleep, study, engage in foreplay, or brush their teeth, as these activities will draw much needed energy from their pool game.

Reading the forums and BD burns 84 calories an hour. Since you gotta burn off 3500 calories to lose just one pound, you'll need to read the forums for 42 hours to lose one pound. :D

...why you see alot of overweight pool players.

I think many pool players choose pool over other sports because body type is less of a factor than in more active sports.

If pool is such good exercise how come the majority of shooters I've seen are in horrible shape, and all the people at my gym are buff and beautiful? This is even after a few beers at the pool hall...

Pool burns more calories than hitting the heavy bag for 2 hours???? WTF....That would be 40 rounds of boxing 3 minute rounds..I doubt even Pro's do that much on the bag

I would bet that your average pool player could'nt last 1 3 minute round on the bag....3 rounds at the most for someone who is really fit...

Sure you burn calories playing pool but compared to any real cardio sport or activity it is'nt even close...

not sure if its any help but i just bought an electric balance, and i lost 2.5 lbs in one day. what i did was: play pool from 10am till 8pm , play poker from 8pm till 10pm. (i did went to sleep :s and i eat after the poker burgers and frites and mayonaise) and i weighted myself when i just woke up.

11.500 steps? thats how much km? lets say 50cm / step: 5.750km's in 3.5 hours. so u walk around 1650km/H or 1mile/hour.

love this treath too :D

could anyone check there weightdifference after 1 hour of pool? im curious :D

I know my body temp goes way up and I start pouring sweat. Then again, I'm morbidly obese so it doesn't take much to make me sweat...lol.

I think you see a lot of over weight EVERYTHING! anymore:D.....This subject interests me because I used to be a fat*ss. I was 5'6", 205!in high school:eek:...now about 160. I was at the mall other day with my wife and we couldn't help but notice the % of fat kids. It breaks my heart because there is nothing that sucks more than growing up a fat kid....I'm still neurotic about it. I expect to wake up and look in the mirror to see I'm a lard ass again.....like professor Klump!
