Playing the Ghost

Hard to see your stroke due to lighting but some nice shooting there! I noticed you were coming up out of your stroke rather early. Wondering if that might be worse or could become worse if you're shooting under some pressure. Thanks for sharing your video.

Pretty sporty session

Seems like you took a few racks to figure out the speed of the table. Is this a table you play on often. If it's not your regular table, I think you adjusted pretty well, which is an important step.

At the 3:00 minute mark you jacked up on a not so easy 5 ball trying to break the 6 away from the rail by the side pocket. Sometimes you have to take what the table gives you. Maybe could have stayed level and had the cue ball come two rails to give you a shot on the 6, but being at the table, you probably had a better view.

Practice your break until you can consistently have the result you had at 14:30. Why did you change to the other side on the next rack? You finally got the perfect break and then changed.

When you watch it, were you getting the shape you wanted? It was good enough shape for the most part, but seems like not expert shape. If you feel it was a little off, bring a 4x4, or even 6x6 sheet of paper to put on the table and see how often you're getting where you truly want to be.

Hope that helps you out. Ghost is a great practice drill, but don't forget other position drills, safety drills, etc. Best of luck to you!

Shape to an area

Peppersauce,
You are right to play to shape to an area instead of a specific spot. But sometimes your mind convinces you that you got the shape you wanted. The paper helps confirm that for sure. Keep up the good work!

Hey everybody. I decided to make a video of myself playing the ghost yesterday and post it for all of you to critique. I'm always looking for new knowledge and new ways to improve so if you have some spare time please check it out and let me know when you see me doing something wrong or if you see ways I can improve. The video is a little long (36 min) and I'm missing a lot in the beginning but it gets better. Thanks everyone in advance! Any input will be very much appreciated!

I like your pace of play a lot. Nice pre-shot routine, no wasted time. we can all gain something by watching your pace. If you can bring this relaxed play into competition, you should do well.

Shot making is good, better cue ball will come with more practice. Now's a good time to make a resolution not to cheat the pocket but play better angles.

You have a powerful break but these tables have probably been tapped to death. If you use pool hall balls, try Renfro's rack at www.outsville.com - Magic Rack works well with newer ball sets.

I enjoy watching the home made videos, thanks for posting that. At 11:45 bridging around the 9 to shoot the 8, try that shot with a closed bridge and see if you have better success. At 30:30 another possibility would have been hitting it harder and going forward two rails for an easier shot in the 9.

The only other thing is you don't need to use a soft break or cut break when playing the ghost. Spreading balls open is more important than pocketing a ball on the break.

Nice shooting and thanks for the video.

I only watched the first few shots - why did you play the first one ball like you did? Were you trying to break the cluster?

+1 The Accu-Rack by Renfro is the nutz. I like it better than anything I have used.

I should've used a closed bridge on that shot or at least stood up. I wasn't comfortable but I shot anyway. I'm going to go back and set that shot up again and try it a few times both ways. I think you're right though. A closed bridge would have been better.
The shot at 30:30 was just bad position. I was straight in and didn't want to try to cheat the pocket. I could have at least rolled up a little more though...

Re: position, you seemed to attempt "down the line" shape on many but not all shots.

Using a paper target is fine but the BEST shape resides in sort of a "triangle" or funnel....the point of which is at the OB but which steadily widens out (up to a point) as you are farther from the OB.

The POINT is...that if you CROSS the "triangle/funnel" then in only a couple of inches (if you're close to the OB) you will be WAY out of line.

Conversely, if you plan to have the CB travel "down the line" TOWARD the OB...not ACROSS the shape line...then your speed can be off a FOOT...or TWO (if you are far enough away from the OB and still have reasonable shape.

Of course, you have to accept the routes that the table requires but there are OFTEN choices where you can come "down the line" instead of trying to hit a particular spot for the CB to stop.

Nice shootin'

I have read all of the previous posts, and watched the video. The others have posted some very helpful information, so I won't dwell on that.

I have only one encouragement for you in regards to how you begin each attempt.

Take a walk completely around the table to view the layout. This is a good habit to develop, because it gives your eyes a chance to deliver information to the brain, as to how to analyze the approach.

In the old school vernacular, we called it,"walk and chalk" and it is a great method of seeing patterns. This applies especially after the break, but should be done before every shot.

Good Luck and Good Shooting.
