playing the ghost

You break, take ball in hand on the first shot, if you run out from there, you win, if you miss at any time the ghost wins. You don't have to take ball in hand on the first shot but the ghost percentage will be MUCH higher than 50%.

When you play the ghost, you usually have to set a race to something. I personally race the ghost to 7. As mentioned above, after the break you get ball in hand, then try to run out, if you miss, you lose a game to the ghost. See if you can beat the ghost. Try playing 3ball ghost first, if you can beat that, go up to 4 ball ghost, and on up if you can keep beating it. Right now, I can only beat the 5 ball ghost.

So basically, you add ball in hand & don't need to sink one on the break and in turn your opponent is perfect?

Yeah I'm not ready for that yet... thanks for the info!

well, start with an easy ghost, like the 2 ball ghost or 3 ball ghost.

you would be quite surprised how ready you really are!!! I started the ghost about 2 weeks ago. I started with the 4 ball ghost and can beat him 70% of the time in races to 10. I have started the 5 ball ghost and beat him about 40% of the time. My goal is to beat the ghost 70% of the time for 3 or 4 days straight, then I add another ball. Keep track of your accomplishments in excel or regular paper and YOU WILL be quite surprised of your own shooting!!

I think the ghost is a great way to become a better player and a fun way to practice. When you get up to the 6-ball ghost start also keeping track of if you parked the Q-ball in the middle of the table. But don't count it as a loss if you don't. I believe you still need an hour or so of position and pocketing drills a day too.

When you get so you can beat the 6-ball ghost a fair percentage of the time, set up Missisispi 9-ball and see if you can beat that ghost. Good luck with that:eek: . Johnnyt

Playing the Ghost is a way to keep score that imitates an actual competition. A more immediate way is to add or subtract a ball with each rack: if you run the rack you add a ball to the next one; if you don't run the rack you subtract a ball. This gives you a rack-by-rack challenge to beat your last score and automatically keeps score for you without spreadsheets or paper. It's called "progressive".

I played a ghost once...race to seven for 50. When I looked up from making the winning nine, the opponent had turned into a ghost...poof gone.

I hate comming home from work, only to find the ghost has been waiting for me, practicing all day on MY table. No wonder that bastard is so good.:D

I think his brother stays at my house and does the same thing. It sure is frustrating.

I've never actually played the ghost yet. It sounds like he's a pretty decent player. Maybe I'll try a few sets against him and find out just how good he really is. If we play for $$ he'd better not up and disappear on me or I'll hunt him down and make him pay double! ;)

I am pretty sure he drinks my beer also. I KNOW that keg was full yesterday!

Back in my snooker days we used to do line ups for breakbuilding practice. We would have a race, every time you hit a 50 you win and every time you don't you lose. I guess that was our version of the ghost. A line up is when you line the reds up 2 between the black and top cushion, 4 between black and pink, 6 between the pink and blue and 3 the other side of the blue and then just try to make a break.

A big line of reds up the middle of the table. I am sure it's on youtube somewhere. It's one of the ways we used to practice when there wasn't anybody to play.
