The pocket sizes you mentioned are the standard for most all pool tournaments pro's play in today, if they're playing on Diamond tables;)

talk to a mechanic/pocket size

If your interested in having a table play tight, but fair, the corner pockets should be : 4' at the wooden opening (throat of the pocket) and 4.5" at the rubber end of the tits (table opening of the pocket).

This guy you should listen to. He's among the top table mechanics in the world, maybe the best... but that's subjective. He's the best that I know of anyway.
(And he's coming here soon! :D)

This is a little generalized as a figure of speech, meaning that slate shelves change the way pockets play for one thing. Secondly, pocket facings make a huge difference in balls being pocketed as well. And, just for curiosity purposes, in order to get the pockets you're referring to, what pocket angles are you talking about? And if you're rule of thumb is measured the way you described, how would you determine the side pockets...the same way as well?:p

Glen

Glen, could you describe the best way to get the pockets to the size of a professional table? The table I am getting isn't getting put up till the 4th of may so I still have time to get any extra materials I will need. Would extra pocket shims be enough?

ok i have bought my table but the corners are 4 and 7/8 inches, what is the best way to make them 4.5 or even a tad smaller than that?

Tight pockets

The Diamond I shoot on has 4" pockets at the corners and they are cut to a 43, which I'm told is the tightest angle and pocket size ever. This table was special ordered and they installed the rails and cut them on the spot. This was ordered directly from diamond. It's not my table, but in a pool hall, believe that. Michaels in Fairfield Ohio I think Michaels told me he bought the first diamond tables ever sold

Replace the 1/8" facings with 1/4" neoprene facings, that'll drop them to 4 5/8", next step is to replace the cushions, extend the rails, and add 3/16" facings;)

I've never known Greg to support pocket sizes smaller than 4 1/2" and certainly not 4". I think someone is BS'ing you about this. I mean, after all...how could you special order a table that was not even built at the time and get the first one with 4" corner pockets...Diamond wasn't even building the tables themselves in the first 10 to 12 years to begin with, they were being built by someone else...per Greg's spec's;)

Mr. Cobra (may I call you Glen?),

How deep is the shelf on a Diamond Pro with 4-1/2 pockets?

Why don't you call Greg and Ask him? Then ask him how well he knows Michael of Michael's billiards in Fairfield Ohio

No Bs here!

I spoke with Greg today, and just as I said, Greg has NEVER produced a 4" pocketed table, and never would, so like I said...someone is feeding you some BS;)

I just spoke with Michael at Michaels billiards in Fairfied ohio he he still says he is correct and that he did buy all of his diamonds new from Greg.
Maybe, I could post his phone number and you could call him. He says that Greg will sell his tables anyway you want to order them.

I bet your measuring the wrong area of the pocket. Have him measure at the point or opening of the pocket and not the back of the pocket were the leather pocket is.
