Stick with a game the public knows, just stick it on tougher equipment and remove the luck factor if possible, don't go reinventing the wheel and destroying what little advantage pool has, everyone has played 8 ball / 9 ball and can relate to it!

Agreed!.... Rep'd

Personally, I think that the entire WPBL is genius.

The facility, production value, players, teams, logos... everything is great!

The game, bonus ball... not so much.

The main problem that I can see is that there is no way for someone, who has been newly exposed to the game by the WPBL, to go to their local pool room and play the game that they just watched. Sure, you can use solids and stripes instead of oranges and purples, but if I was new to the game and saw that on TV, I would want to play the same game, with the same ball set... not have to make due with what I have access to.

The WPBL could be a smashing success if they partnered with the APA or BCA and played 8-Ball or 9-Ball. This way, not only would you have all of the positives of the pros, the teams, the venue, etc... but if someone wanted to play the games the pros play, they could go to the pool hall and do that. Even better yet, they could join their local APA or BCA league and be able to get the entire WPBL "experience" for themselves. This would not just bring more viewers to the game, but more avid players, as well.

Let me see if I have this correctly.

Someone who has never played pool although they have been exposed to it their entire life, will see BB played and will immediately seek out a pool room so that they can play it. So, you actually believe that these non-players will become so taken by the game of BB that they will stop bowling, playing tennis, poker, going to the movies, whatever it was they were doing for the last twenty-five years to play BB, and actually significantly increase the general pool playing population?

Or do you believe that current 9-ball, 8-ball, straight pool, 10-ball, and one pocket players will abandon their current games for BB?

NEWS....Although I believe that BB hopes to cannibalize players from the existing player base, neither one will happen. And that's sad, because no one benefits...no one.

IMO.

I'm not sure how you got any of that out of my post.

It's pretty obvious that the current billiards demographic isn't big enough to make the sport as profitable as everyone would like it to be. The whole point of the arena they built, the city-centric teams, the new game... it's all to try and attract a new demographic, and a larger fan base.

My point is, if they succeed in that, there is no way that a new fan (a person who may not have been previously "turned on" or taken interest in pool) can go to their local pool room and play bonus ball the way they see it played on the computer/TV.

My opinion is that the WPBL is a great idea... just not when they use a game that isn't familiar and/or readily available to everyone.

Also, you don't have to stop bowling, or golfing, or anything else to take up pool as a hobby. I do all three of those things pretty well. I may not be as good at pool as I am the other things, but I still enjoy it.

You have to realize that not everyone has been exposed to pool for their entire life... especially the younger croud.
