Well, you may get your wish about expanding the pool base:

I heard that the APA will be lowering the minimum age to 18 next session.

My title is partly in jest as I am sure that there are some of you who will not be looking forward to this 'action', and then maybe there is a group of you younger people who may welcome the change.
 
Great. Will this mean there will be a lot of minors hanging around the bars now and getting the owners in trouble for serving drinks to them?

That was my first thought too. There are alot of places around Houston that host APA teams, but don't allow under 21 to enter.
 
Perhaps it's time to lower the age limit to 18, (I'm 38 btw). I've never understood the mentality of trusting someone to vote or be killed for your country but not trusting them with a beer.

Yep, my thought exactly. Most APA teams play out of bars that serve booze, hence the 21 yr old rule.

I've got my league night tonight, and about half the time, my league operator is there... I'll poke him in the ribs about this one, see if he's heard anything. *shrug*

Dumb question perhaps, but remember where I'm from .... isn't the drinking age 18 in Alberta ? I'm way too close to 50 for it to really matter to me, but I recall you Albertans having a pretty liberal attitude back when I was sneaking into bars.

Hi Dave, yeah it is 18 here and we don't seem to have too much problems with it. The way I look at it people are either going to be responsible with alcohal or they're not, age has a little to do with it, but not enough to make that much of a difference.
 
IF the APA moves in this direction, it would be strictly a marketing move. When I became a League Operator in '92, they had 125,000 players (and were just starting to sell franchises in Canada), and forecast that they would eclipse a million players by the end of the decade. Now it is 6 yrs past that, and although the APA has grown to 200,000 (including Canada), that is FAR short of their boasted goals. They have done a pretty good job of saturating many of the larger markets around the country, but still have no clue how to apply the "APA concept" to small markets. IMO, that's the only way they will grow significantly larger...not by lowering the 'legal' age to join APA. jmo

Sorry, this was just off topic observations about the legal drinking age which was likely one of the factors in having the APA age of 21 in the first place.
 
If it gets more people involved in pool, then all the better. If a particular venue has a issue with underage drinking then I'm sure that provisions will be in place. Otherwise that location won't allow under 21 in the establishment.

There are alot of Sports Bars that have 18 and older frequenting the buisiness but everyone is carded before being served. So it really souldn't be an issue.

Just my 2 cents. :cool:
 
Years ago when I was 18 I would go into the bars with legal age drinkers, sit at a table and have drinks that others ordered for me, the drink was always placed in the middle of the table so no one could tell whose it was. That is the problem even with carding, if the liquor control came in who was at fault? The owners?

After I turned 21 the age was lowered across the US to 18 and then for some reason it was raised back to 21? I think this was in the late 60's early 70's.

I think the reason for 21 is that a lot of 18's were still in high school and they were buying stuff for their buddies that resulted in out of control drunken weekend girl gone wild parties. Not that I am against that. Darn, lower the drinking age.
 
Yea, but its area specific or somesuch thing. I'm 19 and would like to join, but where I'll be moving to in a few days (denver), they don't allow under 21s as they mostly play in bars and whatnot.

I think it's a good idea, but not very realistic.
