Speaking of Hyatt....have you all listened to the 1937 CBS radio reenactment of John Wesley Hyatt's celluloid discover while trying to invent a substitute for ivory billiard balls?

This was a weekly radio program called "Cavalcade of America", which on Jan 13th 1937 aired a skit portraying the events surrounding Hyatt's discovery of modern "plastics". Brought to you by DuPont of course lol.

Listen now:

http://www.chicagobilliardmuseum.or..._Cavalcade_of_America_-_Jan_13_-1937_-CBS.mp3

That was an interesting 27 minute reenactment and summation of how we came into appreciating the plastics and phenolics we play with every day.

Thank you for sharing that, Mr Bond!

I hope to hell you're being facetious saying it's an uncanny resemblance.

just stare at it for a minute or two and tell me you don't start to hear Billie Jean is not my lover She's just a girl who claims that I am the one But the kid is not my son She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son

well?

best,

It's most definitely a tempting and compelling notion, K2K!

I fear, however, my personal desires and ambition could easily cloud any financial judgement when it came to commissioning the minimum production runs required by most manufacturers (usually something around 200 boxes). I believe my designs are beautiful, naturally, but will a couple off hundred other folks? That might be a problem, eh? :)

I wonder if it would be a good idea to post them up on here for appraisal?

I think it would be a grand idea, Rubik's, to share any idea(s) you may have for a pool ball set design (or any single ball design ideas as well) with the forum members to offer up a few thoughts - if you dare.

One never knows where ideas may lead

On second thought perhaps, a more appropriate emoji may be this little guy....

It's only money. Always more where that came from, I've heard. Let's see what can be had.

Speaking of designs...

Being a fan of various VIGMA ball designs over the years and sharing some of those within this thread, I thought I would share one of the latest acquisitions directly from the Vigma folks over in China.

These are called the Vigma Vortex

A few of the design elements that first caught my eye when searching for unique and intriguing balls one evening when I ran across these are the very large numerals, stripes common with every ball and of course the variation on coloring. Racy comes to mind.

At first, the 3 ball/11 ball coloring seemed odd and even faded, but after closer inspection and playing with these during a few frames of FARGO, realized it was just "different" and grew on me after a short time. I must admit, the 7/15 ball gray coloring is a nice change of pace as well.

As for overall ball quality and finish, Vigma can vary somewhat between many of their offerings, but routinely seem to have a fine luster to them and polish up beautifully. Off the top of my head, I'm not certain of the exact plastic composition but safe to say they most likely aren't phenolic. With that being said, I can validate that they do not skid and do not have any impact marks (like Centennials display after only a few minutes) after an hour of rigorous testing and play. Almost flawless. And after 1 minute in the Diamond polisher, look as if they just came from final finishing at the factory.

A decent ball set for the $125-$140 range.

Time sure flies when you're having fun ----- searching out the next prized ball set...

Here's the latest ball set I'm fortunate enough to take care of until the next caretaker comes around in 5 decades or so......

Say hello to the Hyatt Romanique II's:

I can't think of anything else to say at the moment, for I must get these in play and relish the experience of seeing the Roman Numerals roll and reacquaint myself with studying ball numbers and colors

I was fortunate enough to see this set in person today. Truly a beautiful set of spherical billiard objects. (I just cannot type or say "beautiful set of balls" in a real sentence). Nice running into you Kerry...

Well thank you for the kind words, RC - truly appreciated. I'm enjoying working towards the goal and vision of amassing a respectable collection that will one day work it's way into a private cue club for all members and our youngest generation to enjoy and appreciate. Another thank you as well for your help in many ways towards this goal

I play with a few guys that like three-handed games and so I pulled out the Aramith Poker set on the shelf just dying for a chance to show their mettle on the baize and thought I'd post the ball set showing both sides of the balls, since 99% of pictures of this set only show the suited side....

Love

I love this thread and will have to have a friend of mine take some photos for me. I have two clay sets one is in pretty good condition, plus 2sets of Rasching 9 ball sets with no numbers. I have an unopened box it still has the shrink wrap on it of the Meucci 's . The box had pictures of the top players from that time frame. One of my favorite sets is a set of Centennials that came with a 1962 Gold Crown. They belonged to the Major League Baseball player. Rocky Colivito. Rocky played for the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers. I had him autograph the box for me.
In addition I have several sets of Aramiths and the Skittle Cyclops with the oringinal one eye cue ball.
I collect Cues , balls, and chalk.

Hello, franko ----welcome to the thread and thank you so much for taking a few moments to share what you have. I would love to see every one of the ball sets you just mentioned, including the ones unopened

You mentioned a few of the things you collect, so I'll share some of mine as well in addition to my ball sets collection...I also collect ball racks (triangles) of all sizes and game specific configurations; a vast library of books on all things cue sports related including most magazines; billiard games, card decks and training aides and games; pool related movie posters and all movies of course; bridges and rests all mounted on dedicated bridge cues; and a few other categories I haven't defined yet ----- all of which deserve their own thread perhaps to share and see what others have for pool related passions out there

You brought up an interesting point about the sets and the ball boxes they come in - sometimes the boxes themselves are quite remarkable, flat out interesting or even acting as a canvas for autographs.

Now ------ where's that camera phone

Saddle up, guys!

The Vigma Cowpoke balls are on the table.

I'm sure some will say "what in the WORLD would anyone want a crazy cow patterned ball set for crying out loud?!!"

Just hold your horses.

First of all, I have a few friends and family throughout this big state of Texas that are rodeo fans and even parade around in their hubcap-sized prized Western belt buckles and latest cowboy boots and rodeo fashions ---- and nothing better gets a smile out of these boys than seeing the Cowpokes racked for a quick game of Bullshit - which is their version of no-call Eight Ball

The good ole Holstein dairy cow. 1500 pounds. 90% of all dairy cows on the planet. Biggest producer of milk amongst all the dairy breeds at an average of 9 gallons of milk per cow per DAY. I'm just a city slicker but that's a lot of milk! Holsteins are surely one of the most recognizable and familiar findings on thousands of farms throughout this great country that first originated in the colonies of Holland and Northern Germany according to uncle Larry. Heritage and family stories....I spent nearly every warm summer in SD on my grandparent's and uncle's farms for a month experiencing everything from driving a combine to bailing hay to helping shoe horses and assist in challenging Holstein calf births in the field. Fond memories indeed. Priceless is a better word actually. It is interesting what thoughts get conjured up in one's mind just seeing a simple set of balls on the baize....

Vigma Cowpokes. Kobo resin. They polish up beautifully and roll as true as any flawless Aramith offering I have in the collection. They actually look amazing on the table and I couldn't detect one bit of skid or slide or issue using the pure white cue ball that comes with the set or any of the Cyclop or Aramith cue balls I tested with them.

So ------- anyone reading this post about the Cowpokes and has a Wild West imagination for new pool games, I'd like to develop a game around these balls and already have a few ideas but would love any input or suggestions. Something nutty. Something different. A game name appropriate to the ball design and name. Like my off-the-cuff game of all slop 8-Ball for my rodeo pals that I coined straight up Bullshit

Don't be shy now ----- I'm sure together we can come up with something interesting.
