Pool cues like golf clubs?

I noticed there seems to be a connection between people who play pool also playing golf. On ebay many folks who sell pool cues seem to sell golf clubs as well.

Wondering if pool should be more like golf. Should we have a limited number of sticks in the case that we go between in a game. Like a driver, iron, wedge, putter. For the most part i see people have breaking, shooting, and very rarely jumping.

In the apa jumping isnt even aloud, which i dont get. Asides from establishments not wanting people to ruin there precious tables. and i feel, If felts are ruined deal with it, its the price of having a table or business, pass the cost back. In golf divots are repired, and shots are made on marked up greens, the longer the day goes.

Is the number of cues used limited in most leagues or tournaments? Golf clubs are limited to 12 or so.

I guess im wondering if it would be wise to use a z2 when that extra spin is needed. Then swith to something more reliable wider tipped for long shots, when not so much spin is needed, and margin of error is greater. Or being able to swith to a masse cue if you want. Or a light cue for slow rolling defense. It's a game of skill, and if you use all the weapons wisely, wouldn't that elevate your game even more?

If i played tiger woods and he only had a putter, I think i could give him a run for his money.

here's a story from the world golf hall of fame website which illustrates why playing a champion golfer with any club is no bargain...

Christy O'Connor, known affectionately in the golf world as "Himself" because of his great joie de vivre with which he embraced life - is unquestionably the greatest golfer to come out of Ireland since the end of World War II. No less an authority than Peter Alliss, the doyen of European golf, has lauded his friend and long-time Ryder Cup partner in stating, "Himself was a genius...a legend of Irish golf and golf in general."

O'Connor's legerdemain with his clubs is legendary in the annals of golf, especially in his native Ireland.

His impromptu performance on Bundoran's par-3, 235-yard 13th hole is worth retelling. O'Connor, playing with some Bundoran members, landed a shot onto the green when another of his group did the same.

The man asked O'Connor what he played and he replied "4-iron".

"I played a 5," the proud golfer said, before being told by a third member of that four-ball O'Connor could hit anything in the bag and find the green. O'Connor obliged his partner and proceeded to hit nearly every club in his bag - including putter - landing most of them on the green.

Another connection between pool & golf

A few year's back I was playing pool almost every day of the week between league & weekly tournaments. I started to experience chronic pain around my elbow so I went to see the doctor, who diagnosed me with...............wait for it.............Golfer's Elbow.

According to the doctor (a golfer), the pool stroke & the golf swing put the same kind of stress on the elbow & the surrounding muscles. Who knew?

Jumping is APA is perfectly legal, you just have to use a play cue to perform the jump. {Which lead me to wonder what would happen if I used my jump cue as my only play cue, but I digress.}

Asides from establishments not wanting people to ruin there precious tables. and i feel, If felts are ruined deal with it, its the price of having a table or business, pass the cost back. In golf divots are repired, and shots are made on marked up greens, the longer the day goes.

Grass reapirs itself evey day/night/wattering.

Is the number of cues used limited in most leagues or tournaments? Golf clubs are limited to 12 or so.

APA :: 2 cues; break and play
most:: 3 cues; break, play, jump (no heavier than 24 oz, no shorter than 40 inches)

If i played tiger woods and he only had a putter, I think i could give him a run for his money.

If Tiger only had a 7 iron and a putter, he would beat 95% of all golfers on any course. In fact, many golfers would do better to leave their driver, 1 iron and 2 iron in the back of the vehicle. But I digress, again.

If I am "fully equipped" I carry a Break cue, Playing cue, Jump cue and Masse cue. Do I need them all? Nope. I can play with just my playing cues....including jump and masse. (note that I am talking about the past...I am not the player I once was...by a long shot)

I have asked in the forum before if anybody has ever seen a complete set by a single maker. I would love to see a "complete" matched set. Never saw one.

.

In the early 90's, at more than one Reno Open, there was a guy with longish curly brown hair, I think he had a beard... he once wore huge stereo headphones (might have had tin foil on them- I'm not joking) and he had a massive case full of cues. Don't know his name- we called him Ten Sticks, but I don't know how many cues there really were. My memory is a little faded.

He would select a different cue for each shot. I watched him a lot, but I never figured out the logic (one cue for long shots? Another for stroke shots? One for inside English?)

He would also lick his finger and hold it up in the air like he was testing for wind direction before choosing his cue... This was indoors, at the Sands.

Then one year there was a rule about the number of cues you could have at the table- I made a point of looking for him when I heard that rule, but he wasn't in the tourney. Thought I saw him once in the audience of a pool match on t.v., but it's been a lot of years now.

God, no!

I saw a match where Ronnie Alcano (one of my favorite players, BTW) used four cues...break cue, playing cue, jump cue and a second playing cue that was longer (and he changed shafts once, on that one, too). He switched to the longer cue to reach a shot, and changed the shaft because of the tip, I think. It's no sweat off me, for the most part, but I'd hate for a trend to develop where guys could bring 6 or 7 cues to the table and spend hours in a match switching back and forth, changing shafts throughout, etc. I'm kind of old school, prefer a rule where everybody has to play the whole game on one cue/shaft...have to ask TD for permission to change a shaft if you throw a tip, etc. Break, shoot, jump all with the same cue. I use a jump break now only because I can and everyone else does...plus it saves on my tips if I don't have to break with my player. But given a choice between only one cue permitted or someone bringing a golf bag full o' cues to our match, I'll take the old schooler's route.

you dont think your game would be much better if you mastered 5 different cues and used them all in specialty situations. this is why there are 12 different golf clubs, and tiger woods with 12 golf clubs is much more lethal than woods with 3.

as far as time, theres a shot clock. just dont exceed it. i think t=pool would be more interesting to watch as well. seeing people use different techniques.

as for the person who said grass grows everyday, well felts can be changed when damaged.

grass doesnt grow that much during the 4 day masters tournament, and players later in the field due have to face marked up areas left from those ahead.

I imagine it would be worse for just about everyone if there were suddenly too many cues to choose from. Adding complexity rarely enhances the game.
By all means, please bring 15 cues to play with. Just leave some space for me to put my stuff.

So if one is using a J/B cue as his playing cue..... does that mean I can go ahead and jump with it by removing the butt end to leave just the jump cue? Or does it specify the minimum length?????

went out tonight playing for fun with a friend. shout for nearly 4 hours. had 2 shooting cues, a break, a jump, and a masse cue. used my meucci for shooting, predattor z2 never came out of the bag, bk2 break cue, poison jump cue which came out once, and hit a nice little masse shot with a masse cue i just had built was trapped with no kick and sank the ball. dont think having 5 cues made me worse. played the same, just had more weapons to chose from. i wish i could do this in league play. jumping and masseing is very limited in play, but a good option when needed.

i understand all the old school purists. but sports evolve. i stopped watching baseball, then they started juicing and playing and messing with balls. the best part when i watch pool on the tele is when they jump. and sink it. thats the equivalent of a grand slam. artisitc pool is as popular if not more then 9 ball on u.s. tele. I say throw out all the rules, and let the best man or woman win. and make this more interseting.

mooseman, you cant break down cues in the apa, unless your in some shitty bar with a column and you need a short cue. breaking down cues can be called a forfeit.

Don't see the need for a bag of cues to play the game. In golf different clubs are required primarily to hit to different distances, not something needed in pool.

Maybe we should have caddies too, following us around the table and pulling our cues for us.

dont pros already have mulitiple cues?? they jump, break, shoot of which im sure they have multiple with them. I just want them to add a masse cue i guess.

in the apa we have coaches, no need for caddies.
