Pool Glasses Progressive or BiFocal

I am looking for opinions on changing from my single vision to either progressive or lined bifocal lenses. I have DeCot HyWyd glasses and am very happy with them but the single vision is no longer working for me so I have to change to either progressive or the lined bifocal lens. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated..
Thanks, Dan:confused:

I had the pleasure of not having to wear glasses for 50 years. All of a sudden I started to notice that the news print was getting smaller and blurry. I started out with perscription reading glasses. It was a pain to carry them around and put them on for reading. Then it got to the point where both distant and close were a problem. I got the progressive glasses. The first few weeks were tough because a straight line would bend at the edges and I was working as a engineer in construction.

I have been wearing them now for ten years. I have heard people complain that their pool game is suffering because of glasses. They don't bother me and I feel that I am shooting better than ever. It is not the glasses it is practice and desire to get better.

Go with the progressive. It is like getting a new set of eyes. They have become a part of me and I feel naked without them.

Ive been getting along pretty well with daily wear contacts. Ive had to adjust because at my age I need a third option. The bifocals for long and short distance. But playing pool you need one for the mid distance. So ive balanced out the prescription on contacts going long in my right eye and mid distance in the left. It sort of works for me. But would like to hear from others.
When I got an eye infection and couldnt wear contacts I thought of getting a pair of glasses just for the mid distances. Im expirementing with it now.

And you got all over Wayne for taking a middle of the road stance on the 50/50 shot, Yo. Mid distance shots, Left eye and long shots, Right eye? "Eye" can tell, "Eye" need 9-6 now........... JK my friend.

I realised I needed glasses for PC work and reading about a year ago (big shock!). SInce then my eyes have got worse and a couple of weeks ago I had another test. I need new lenses for my reading glasses but I mentioned my pool to the lady who did my test. I told her about the advice I had read online and in general eye technicians don't tend to understand (or care!) about the concerns of a pool player. This seemed to spur her into action (my desired effect :D ) and she went out of her way to help me.

I told her the range I needed for a 9ft table which luckily enough was about the length of the room, and she test my eyes for a 2-9ft range. She also suggest 1 month contacts for my pool playing since I might play long sessions and can even fall asleep in them if I forgot to take them out. Also I guess because of the problem of looking over glasses lenses when playing in them.

I have only "tried" the lenses through the machine when I did the test but both short (2ft) and long (9ft) vission looked excellent. Proof is in the pudding though so I'll let you know how I get on with them once I try them out.

ANyone think I'm doing the wrong thing, had a bad/similar experience?

Cheers

I threw away my DeCot HyWyd glasses and now love my contacts.

I had my contacts set for 5.5 feet and they are great. Much, much better than DeCot HyWyd glasses. The peripheral vision is critical especially for One Pocket. I only use them for Pool so I only go through a set of 3 in a year. I still use my glasses (tri-focals) for everything else.

Hey OHB have you ever tried glasses with that 5.5 feet prescription.? Does it work? I do the same but am going to try glasses that way as well.

I've been wearing progressives for about ten years now. I love them. Lined bifocals are out. Progressives give you multiple focal points up the center of the lens, so by adjusting your head slightly, you can always bring everything into focus. I will pitch a specific brand - Varilux. I have known people who tried generics (your local mall eye-care super store) with lousy results. I've never had a problem shooting pool or guns. Good luck.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Thanks to all that replied!!
Hey Tom, do the contacts at 5.5 feet give you clear vision up close as well as the long shots?
I am leaning toward the progressive lenses and got to tell you that finding an optometrist to work with me on this is amazingly difficult. I am on my third one now!!
Thanks To All for your advice,
Dan

Yes, 5.5 is perfect for all pool.

I can see up close and as far away as 12 feet. The best part is the peripheral vision that only contacts can give.

All glasses have a Sweet Spot.

All glasses have a Sweet Spot and it is only about the size of a marble. With contacts, the sweet spot is always where is supposed to be AND you get the peripheral vision. I can' stress enough how important this peripheral vision is to pool but it makes a Hugh difference.
I get my contacts at Sams Wholesale Club for $64. The key is getting someone that will work with you. I went through 3 trial sets (and two optometrist) before finding the correct ones for me.

I dumped my tri-focals two months ago and went to distance-only - the optometrist suggested trying that before moving to 'mid-range'-only.

Distance-only worked better than tri-focals, but presented obvious problems. I'm about to do the 'mid-range' glasses, and in looking through old posts I'm seeing recommendations of '2-9 ft', '3-9', '3-10' and '5.5'. Any feedback from people who have tried this option? Thanks.

Thanks to everyone this is a great thread!!! runscott I just ordered mid range glasses as I cant wear contacts all the time because of allergies. Ill see how that works. OHB is right in that you need to find someone who will work with you. An optometrist who understands that POOL is your life. LOL!!!!
