whats the point. Some people just love to play I guess tiger woods is a loser because he does nothing but play golf

I think there is a big difference between Tiger Woods and the loser's who hang in a pool hall 24-7 with no life.

Obviously Tiger Woods doesnt spend 24-7 on the golf course and everyone knows that. And he makes a hell of a lot more money and the pool hall losers, that I see.

"Did you play pool today?"

"No."

"Did you want to play pool today?"

"Of course I did! What do you think I am? Crazy?"

Sorry. Missed my usual 9 ball tourney tonight & I'm sulking!

I'm in a pool hall every day, gambling, trying to get better.. But I only started playing 2 years ago - and it's already becoming increasingly less appealing to me. I'm sure in a few months to a year I won't be going as much (probably once a week or so, like you). But for now I'm a daily customer - I'm super competitive and I like to gamble - I'm stuck.

I don't have any problems with being an every day'er however. What's wrong with it?... I'm into music, am I a loser because I spent every day in the studio for 4 years straight? If so, that's funny, because I was looked up to for that very reason. I got on a few nationally syndicated radio stations, performed a few shows, and made a bit of money on the side. I don't see how a dedicated artist and a dedicated pool player are that different...

I can respect people who are in there every day giving it there all trying to be the best they can be (not talking about the scum that just bum around). You think Efren is a loser? He's been in a pool hall just about every day since he was born. I think the guy is great!..

So no, I don't think pool hall junkie = loser... I think loser = loser and pool hall junkie = pool hall junkie. Some of them are great, some of them are losers. Just like everything else in life.

Ok Theres a difference between being a PoolHall Junkie and a PHJ loser.

Good thing I fixed this problem by just getting a job at the pool hall. :D :D

This thread reminds me of a bum who used to hang out in our rooms around here. His name is Charlie. This guy rode his bike to the room in the morning, arriving usually a bit earlier than the bartender (3-4 hours before it's even open). He carried around his dufflebag and ate his chef boyardee everyday. And he happened to be one of the biggest s#&$-talkers I've seen. He repeatedly claimed to "have Efren's money in [his] pocket." If you wanted to play Charlie for a dollar, he only played for 200. If you wanted to play him for 200 he only played for 2000. We stopped seeing him after he got permanently booted from every pool hall in town. I did see him again doing his thing up in Denver though. HEHE

BTW: He could run 3 balls if the conditions were right (i.e. 3 ducks, miracle position, earthquake pots balls for him).

I must be a PHJ (and I have a wife, kids abd a job). I play pool 3-4 times a week (more when I'm on holiday). Had to go down to Melbourne today, and thought I'd check out the venue I'm playing a big comp in April at. IT WAS FANTASTIC! Good furnishings, 40 tables, a cute barmaid (window shopping ain't a crime) , good lounge area and leather MASSAGE chairs. It just made me drool. I'm now itching to play, and the funny thing is, I get excited about every new room I visit, so PHJ am I, just point me to the nearest hall.

Daniel:D

PS; just leaving to play now :D :D

Let's see. The choices are:
1. Go to the pool room and sit around with all the other losers or
2. Be a winner and have high quality time with girlfriend, wife, family and job while going online to a pool related forum and insult players for doing something they love.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm........................Tough decision!

Gee, I am envious looking up at you on that throne up there from where you make these almighty judgements on our imperfect lives down here.

Nope, I'm going with number 1 but you should be happy to know on the way to the pool room I'm going to stop by the tatoo parlor and have a big "L" tatooed right in the middle of my forehead.

A loser for life,

Did you stop to think that maybe the wife is what drove me to the pool hall??? Is it my fault that I'm now captivated by the angles, lines, and spins???
Or that I'm a glorified Maytag repairman with equipment that doesn't break? What else should I be doing with my time? Drinking? womanizing? taking drugs???

Maybe I'd better reevaluate my decision.....

Play?

Look me up when you get to New York. When you leave maybe then you will wish that you had spent a little more time in the pool hall.

idontknow the question you are asking is similar to asking an alcoholic or a drug addict if they feel like a loser for it. They know they could be doing something more productive with themselves, but at this point in their life it is what brings them the most joy.

i don't have a wife, girlfriend, kid, or other hobbies. i'm at the poolhall almost every day. not always to practice most of the time just to hit 'em around and play a few games. am i a loser? maybe but i'm ok with my habbit. i take time off to watch movies and visit with friends but to tell you the truth i can't think of anything i'd rather do. what do people that don't play pool do?

oh yeah, i don't care what people think of me. bad habbit, waste of time, probably but call me a loser for doing it and i wouldn't care. i'm 25 and i'm too old to be concerned with what other people think of me.

Ummmm
I'm not there all the time, but I am there a lot.
I'm a semi-junkie
And since you are a troll who is just trying to piss people off, if I ever see you in a pool hall I'm going to pee in your cue case.
I like the "junkies" or "regulars" or whatever you choose to call them.

I used to spend all my time nailing hot chicks, then I realized people thought I was a loser for doing the same thing every day, so I quit.

Looks like you were trying to start that back up in Reno with that Asian poker dealer. At least that gives me some point of reference for what you think is a "hot chick". :D

Being a addict of pool is far less harmful than being an drug addict, instead of killing brain cells, your giving your Brain a workout. Pool is harmful if you overly gamble, or find yourself just whacking balls like a zombie. a mindless drone that is a slave to the game.

If like a stated before you can maintain focus and play with intent everytime you pick up your cue and you play everyday you will become a great pool player and on a road of mastery. The cold hard fact is people that play daily out of 1,000 maybe one or two will play hard daily. out of the two the chances for pool greatness are slim to none. BUT that is on the player, not the odd's.

You watch a good player, and how they match up with lesser players, then match them up with a player who is a little better, My observation's tell me when the majority of player's match up close, the winner useualy just obliterate's the other. WHY? if they play about the same shouldnt it be a close game?

The reality is they lack mental toughness, they proboly play to much without meaning. When the other guy brings his game or her game, they basicaly quit. all it takes is one tough safe or a good run and the match is over. OR they will jump out of the gate hard, and then the other guy (or gal) does the same and they crumble.

This will happen over and over again and you will be labeled as a LOOSER.

Sometimes all it takes is a remark from the other player, or maybe a tough shot, the reason this bothers you is because if you go to the hall every day and play at the low end of your ability when the pressure is on your ability drops to near zero. New emotions, maybe some adrenaline and you simply cant play.

In these instances you need to lay down your cue, walk away, and come back another day. Or get expert advice. a pool clinic IMHO gives you something to focus on, or you need a full time coach, you cant do it alone, unless you have the drive and many dont.

your practice sessions need structure, and meaning, and you need to be driven, so that when you feel your letting up someone or something kick's you in the behind to wake you up.

Obviously a pro has overcome this, but sometimes not all of them, I see this happeing in the PRO ranks as well, not as often but it does happen. maybe on a smaller scale but I still see it.

but Hey! what do I know?

Pardon me for not reading all three pages:

Some people don't have wives or kids. Either it didn't work out or they just don't want them.

Some people don't have other hobbies, or they just really like pool over other choices.

There was a kid that once spent all his time on a golf course instead of hanging out with other kids or playing football or going to the mall.....Tiger Woods...

Another kid just wanted to ride his bike 8 hours a day.....Lance Armstrong..

Regardless of why they are there, these individuals like it.....whether it's a cold beer after a hard day at work, or the company of good friends they've known for years, or maybe they just love pool that much....

Either way, they aren't losers, and you don't deserve to judge or label them.....I wish I could go play more than once or twice a week, so I could spend some more time there.....with the losers

Well, I don't have time to go to the pool hall every day, and I'm lucky if I get there twice a week, but if I had been as addicted to pool as I am now back when I was waiting tables in the summer in between school, all my tips would have been spent at the pool hall, and I would have been there just about every day. Having a "real job" and a fiancee makes that less feasible now, but if I could retire from work and just do whatever I wanted, you'd better believe I'd be at the pool hall every day, at least for a while.
