Why on Earth do they have Ricky Schroder Playing with a cue that appear to have a graphite shaft?

I realize it's a subjective thing, but really... it is not a good movie. It is a very bad movie. Rick Schroder's cue is at the bottom of my list of why it's bad.

not a great movie... if its in the rotation on the movie channels and your suffering insomnia and channel surfing its worth pausing on ... cause Christopher Walken is still the man. and just the idea that Ricky Schroeder is Chaz Palminteri's little ***** is kinda funny.

That is one of the worst movies I have ever seen!

it still gives the 6 out to turn the river, shooting gallery and that horrible 9 ball the movie trailer that doesn't seem to die.
at least you get good performances from chaz palminteri and walken.

Christopher Walken is the MAN...

I thought it was odd too. I don't think I've ever seen a movie based on pool that would appear realistic to a pool player other than the original The Hustler. All other movies tend to appeal to the average joe that doesn't know much about pool. I have always believed it would be possible to make a realistic pool movie that could appeal to players as well as those that don't play pool.

Just set up a camera in "Hanks" on a Saturday and you will have an Academy award nomination film. Probably similar to "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest"

I agree with you about the graphite cue..a little r&d would not have allowed
that.
I think any movie with Walken in it is worth seeing, however....
The scene where he talks about how to compete is great...imo
...didn't understand that? ..did I stutter?

I disagree about your reaction to TX Polnut's post....
...it was better than the movie.
The last shot is totally unrealistic...you need a gun to collect in that spot.

PS...This scene was worth the aggravation of watching this flawed movie.

Turn The River was an ungodly horrible movie. I kept waiting for it to improve, and yet, I found myself still waiting when the credits ran. In all reality the plot line of Pool Hall Junkies was a good idea...Kid with great natural talent gets screwed over by someone he thought he could trust (that doesn't sound very poolhall(ish) does it), who then realizes he was screwed over and attempts to give the game up for another life only to realize that's his calling and finally makes it. Mars Callahan's acting and shooting was decent because he is a fairly good pool player in his own right, but Ricky's for sure left a lot to be desired, something like teaching him a proper bridge, and maybe telling him not to drop his shoulder on every freaking shot and not to have such a jerky stroke. And like what was said already, to actually collect on that last shot you would have had to shoot your opponet and his backer to ever collect on that in real life. Other than that, the movie wasn't too bad in my opinion. Kinda gives a bad name to pool in all reality though, kid gets screwed over in pool hall, drug money in pool hall, all the hustles they show in the pool hall, big guy snapping a stick about to beat up danny in pool hall, firing air barrels in pool hall, getting beat up after firing air barrel in pool hall, going to rob pawn shop to pay off air barrel, betting your college money in pool hall...There wasn't alot in this movie that sheds much good light on anything that goes on in a pool hall. In all reality all this stuff really does happen but it's not that common but why expose the lows of pool?

That was enjoyable Thank You

I enjoyed the movie at face value the first time around. As with most things, once a little knowledge got in the way the movie had some of the shine knocked off. As most have said, Christopher Walken is reason enough to keep watching the movie for me. The last shot drama cancels itself out for me; sure the "hustle" wasn't realistic, but the leave after the jump that made the shot come about was about as far fetched. In the end, you can entertain yourself in one of two ways with the movie- blissful ignorance just watching the film, or tearing it apart with a critical eye.

As for the graphite shaft... maybe it's a more realistic movie than you thought and it was part of his hustle? Reference any number of threads about the sneaky pete 2.0 (budweiser cues, flashing light cues... graphite cues?)

You haven't seen Twilight, have you?

Actually I have, hence I said 'one' of the worst movies I've ever seen. :D To my misfortune I've seen all 3 twilights! (I'm married) and yes they all suck!!

In my opinion the movie was made to appeal to the younger crowd. I say this based upon the language, and the plot that this movie portrays. I think there was little or no thought to represent pool in a positive light, it just follows what the public perception had been concerning pool for many many years.

I think the movie sucked on all levels, but I have a copy of it on DVD along with all the other pool movies for my customers to watch while playing pool and like I said above the younger crowd love the movie.
