MERRIMACK – Undercover police executed a raid at a pool hall yesterday and arrested the owner on felony charges of secretly operating two poker machines at the store.

Edward Mosher, 51, of 98 Turgeon Ave., Dracut, Mass., the owner of Merrimack Billiards, was arrested on felony charges, punishable by from 1 1/2 to six years in prison.

The raid stems from a nine-month investigation, police said. Undercover officers learned that patrons were putting money into poker machines and scoring points that were tallied by employees and earned the players' cash, police said.

"Customers were basically able to play the machines and rack up points that were reimbursed by employees' for cash," said Lt. Peter Albert.

Albert said the department learned about the situation from an anonymous tip to the crime line.

Police confiscated $10,000 in cash from the pool hall yesterday, found in drawers and cubbies that undercover officers allege they saw gambling money kept. The two poker machines each contained about $1,000, Albert said.

Police are continuing the investigation, he said.

Albert said state law forbids the use of poker machines for profiteering, and punishment for breaking the law is generally directed at the operators of such machines. Police could charge patrons of the gambling machines, although it is unlikely, he said.

The pool hall was occupied by a single patron and an employee yesterday, neither of whom wanted to comment on the charges. The structure includes several pool tables, video games and a bar.

Mosher was placed on $25,000 bail and will be arraigned Tuesday at Merrimack District Court, police said. Merrimack police and the New Hampshire Liquor Enforcement Bureau will continue to investigate.

So? It's the law, right?

Tx, you've given the OK for using the initiatory force of law to relinquish one's property rights for the good of society. Isn't that what happened here? What's your problem with this? People voted, right? Someone complained...couldn't these gamblers have just taken their gambling 20 feet outside? How hard would that have been?

No control of property, but still responsible for it. Bummer...another lost pool hall. :(

Where does it stop?

I will never forget the time that me and a road player named Geese were on our way to the horse races in Charleston, West Virginia. It's a beautiful drive, going through this part of Maryland. We ended up making a pit stop in Brunswick, a quiet sleepy little town, with not much happening.

We saw a little bar right next to the railroad tracks and decided to head in to quench our thirst. They had a pool table there, too, but what caught Geese's attention was the poker video machines. The place was packed, and these poker machines were the main attraction for the local patrons.

Geese moseys on over to one of the poker machines and puts in a few bucks. About $20 later, he ends up winning a big hand, worth $100. He goes up to the bar and asked for his money. The bartender looked at him and said, "We do not pay any monies out for these poker machines." Geese looked at him like he was nuts and said, "Well, what are all these guys doing then, playing these poker machines? Just for funsies?" He was a hot firecracker, right about this time, ready to blow.

We were strangers in the town, and nobody knew us. I told Geese we better just leave and get up the road. Finally, a patron, who I think might have been part of the management, followed us outside and gave Geese a crisp hundred-dollar bill, saying, "I heard you talking to the bartender, and I felt a little bad for you. I'm giving you this out of my own pocket."

Yeah, sure! We were happy, though, and were off on our merry way to the races! :D

Poker machines and gambling

Its interesting that in Az. you can gamble head to head almost on anything or anywhere as long as where you are dosen't make a profit on it. No we can't have Calcutta's here either.

Now 8 miles from my room there are two "Indian Casinos" where you can play most any machine, card or dice game that exists.

Some states allow poker machines, some don't.

I guess my questions are. Do we live in two diferent countries and just how united is The United States?

These, slot-machine like machines have popped up in various locations including gamerooms, poolrooms, convenience stores, etc. There was a law referred to as the Chuck-E-Cheese law, that these operators used to make the claim that it is legal to pay cash on them. These operators get raided and closed down periodically, only to open up a short time later under a different name.

Its a shame. Its hard to make money on a nice room around here. The poker machines are the one thing that keeps local rooms in the black.

Was that in the Looney Tunes new version of Apocolyspe? Have you seen that one with Buster Bunny et al? This is the Beginning, the beginning of our story, the beginning. This is the Middle, the middle of our story, the middle. This is the End, the end of our Story, the end.

I crack up on that cartoon.:p

I guess this time it was really happening!

There's so much smoke and mirrors in the world of the "big money" pool player that 90 percent of the stories are positively fiction of the Rings Lardner variety. I guess this one was actually happening.

Now there's a pool hall for sale. Go get it, boys!

Yours Very Truly,

I had a friend that owned a pool room. Those machines were the only money he made over the last year. If it wasn't for the poker machines, he would have closed within thirty days of the smoking ban that eventually killed his business....
