Oak Park Billiards

Used to go there and loved sitting in the high chairs with foot rest ,you could see everything so well. Iloved those revolving cue racks. There wasKlings, arcades and several others i just dont remember. The place was just great.I believe it was on harlem av.

Jimmy King, Leon Raptus, Kerry Zimmerman, my ol road bro Bill Blake and i played a lot of pool there (home turf) in the early 60's.

That's where i "trapped" Wade Crane into giving me the 8 on one of the 10' tables (lol)

i bought one of the 10' tables in 73 or so and brought it to memphis when i was transferred here...wish my hand would have been stronger. my table had 6 legs, was made out of different kinds of hardwoods, had mop inlays for diamonds, big pockets, sloooow cloth, was the drop dead nutz and had the heaviest frame in GOD'S creation. iirc it set me back a dime

MEMORIES...

It looks like a bunch of Arcades with some Medalists

Great looking old room... cement floors, not good for the knees and certainly not good for balls that leave the table.

But I bet if those tables could talk.....

I've never played on tables like that. Can anyone comment on how they play compared to a "modern" table like a GC (assuming that the rails were good - or replaced)? Can Glen or another mechanic speak to that or whether they can be rendered into a modern "players' table"?

Gideon<-----played on some antique tables at the old Academy of Spherical Arts that had square cushions (like a snooker table) but pool cut pockets. Very strange.

The rails tops aren't as wide as modern rails, and securing the rails directly to the slate can be tricky, but they can absolutely be made to play as well as a modern table. Replica rails of any specs can be produced for an out of date table in any decent carpenters shop.

Eeal estate broker Ed Restificar said "the building is currently on the market for $575,000, and the pool equipment is available at a discount. Otherwise, he's going to sell the tables along with the racks, balls and pool cues."

Maybe we're driving up the price of those tables for Mr. Restificar.

I'm going to make an attempt to view the property.

Was wondering the same thing .

The article JAM posted has the name of the original owner wrong. He wasnt David Lorimer he was John Lorimer ....here he is on the cover of Billiards Magazine in March 1923 as the article correctly pointed out

i was told there were around 30 anniversaries and some medalist and 5 kling

if there are people on here who could commit to taking 1 or more perhaps we could form a
group and buy the whole bunch

i have a Kling in my home that is beautiful and plays great as far as i am concerned
it is a 4 leg model which i prefer because it is easier to set up level

i also own a restored anniversary that i would sell for $6000 quick cash

the medalist,if thats what those tables are,are really beautiful antiques as well
but restoring them can be a chore

jam has done us all a favor by making the pictures available

is this where buggs plaayed on the south side

Hi Dean,

No, this room is located in the western suburb of Oak Park.

i was reading where you talked wade crain into giving you the 8 ball

as i recall this would not take much talking,
you didn't mention how you liked it

stories like this make me glad not to be a stake horse

i am remodeling again ,you wouldn't have a spare truck load of paint would you?

Remember kelly, she has 3 kids now and we are working on her house
when (if) i ever get through with the job i am thinking about going to Houston
for an old timers pool or one pocket tournament on April 13,

It would be good to see your face again,Bob owen offered to pick me up in Dallas
and provide the transportation,he is going to play(donate) in the tournament

I can't bring myself to play a game where I know going in that I need 10-4 to beat the worse player there

But with you playing Billy aka Wade with the 8,perhaps you would like to stake me

Here's the outside: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.886...cQCuHLL3cieyHlE_Qg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

Looks like they had the address mounted above the windows on things that look like pool balls.
---
First of all the closing or liquidation of a pool room is sad to hear especially
an old school room like Oak park seems to be.
Second
If you look to the left of the outside pic that seems to be a condo building or apartment
Building. - then scroll to the right that is an impressive piece of reel state IMO
That will be developed if the oak park building has been sold --
I get development and gentrification etc, but after a while a neighborhood looses
Its character. I don't want to get on a soap box so I will stop and just say sorry to see
It close.

talking wade into giving me the 8 is one of many examples of why i worked and he didn't

iirc i was 5 or 6 games stuck @ 20 per in apprx a half hour before i pulled up...he kept rolling out to where i'd roll out from

Just sayIn"

Jam, it says that I have to spread rep around before I give you anymore so I will just do this. There are so few posters left out there that just consistently contribute interesting, positive, affimative, enlightening, and just interesting posts left but you are consistently one of them.
Reps if I could give them to you. Don't go away again.

dear adam

sorry to bring up paiful memories from
days gone by

i personally talked cliff into giving me 4 hit and the pick,
tommy ray went in with me

together we went down the toilet, funny thing happened. cliff did not know tommy was in with me and
went over to his ear and said"I have the nuts"

Tommy told me on the Q T ,I pulled up stuck several games
but glad to escape with no more damage to pocket or ego

when you play as often as we did,it is not possible to avoid losses

in fact i think you inflicted some damage to my roll, upon our first encounter

i hope your health is good and that we
meet again
dean

ps
i am thankful for the paint you gave me
i guess you can meet good people in the pool room

What Tommy said ...

Every table in the building is an antique. Mostly Medalists, Arcades, and Regents.
This one had the bead string mounted right on the table.
