Must be a slow day for law enforcement in Fort Pierce, Florida! :o

The world of illegal gambling can be carried out in many different places. Pool halls are a common place where gambling takes place, but usually it involves playing the game of pool.

That was not the case at the M & M Pool Room in Fort Pierce, Florida. The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office raided the pool hall for what they claim to be an illegal gambling operation.

When police served a search warrant at the pool hall they found evidence that an illegal poker gambling operation was taking place. They found cards, chips, and dice inside of a suitcase, and also found large amounts of cash on several of the participants of the game.

Courtney V. Harris was arrested and accused of running a gambling room. He was sitting in front of the dealer tray at the poker table. Four other men were also arrested in the sting and three were charged with a misdemeanor gambling charge. The fourth was found with a small amount of marijuana and charged accordingly.

Owen Morris admitted to frequently playing in the card game, and police found over $900 on his person.

Here's the best part:

He claimed the money was not for gambling and that it was his grandmother's rent.

Harris admitted to running the pool hall and seemed confident that the poker game he was running was legal. He told police he would be glad to explain how the game worked when his lawyer was by his side.

You don't think a few laws were being broken? The fact that is was in a pool room is incidental. The guy was so stupid he has no idea that in Florida they can seize your property. Depending how far this goes he could lose all his equipment as well as lose his license. What you have here is someone to stupid to be a criminal. To make a few hundred bucks he may have lost everything.

I can see you feel very strongly about this. :grin-square:

If something like this happened in my neck of the woods, I would think that law enforcement should have better things to do with my taxpayer dollars.

I'd rather have them investigating other happenings, than an "illegal" poker game in the back room of a pool hall. JMHO!

By the way, it's "TOO stupid to be a criminal."

Barry had a few other things going on, aside from a "home casino."

There was that sting operation in the hotel room for starters!

You miss the point, if you are going to break the law you better know what the real consequences are. I once was going to do some bookmaking and I actually sat down with my attorney to discuss it. He told me I would probably never find my self in jail but if I got busted I may find myself losing a lot to stay out. He pulled up one case where guy lost his house because he was running a poker game there. Another guy who had an ice cream truck was doing football cards from his truck. He got busted and the truck was seized and he lost it along with his means of making a living. The truck cost $40,000 by the way. If you want to break the law you better know the law backwards and forwards. You can do something seemingly innocent and find you are breaking a host of federal laws you never heard of involving state lines the use of a phone across state lines and so on. That was my point, here is a guy jeopardizing his business for nothing.

I love poker as much as the next guy. In fact, I'm really pissed off that we can't deposit money in on line poker sites like pokerstars without jumping through hoops and leaving our SS#.

Be that as it may, I'd like to say a word or two in defense of our police.

1. Police don't invent the laws, they don't even make the laws. They are bound by oath to act on information of existing laws that are being broken, whether those laws are ( in the view of any individual) good laws or ridiculous laws.

2. Law makers that WE vote in are the ones who make these laws.

3. The fact that police act on illegal poker rooms, speeding violations, or merely littering violations, does not preclude (as inferred ) that they are doing this in lieu of investigating homicides or robberies or any other felonious act. They investigate and act on all the above.

Ok, I'm about finished with my rant. Point is, put the blame on the idiots who make the laws if you feel they are stupid, not the folks bound by law to enforce them.
