We're gonna have a rental car for the whole weekend and are wondering if there are any local pool halls worth checking out. Preferably with 9ft tables.

We'd probably be willing to drive up to 20 or 30 minutes.
Thanks for the input.

pool hall

Drexeline Billiard Club is the one to check out. Good place to play if you set-up a game at the Expo and want to go some where. Probably 20 minutes from the convention center. Markley and Main Line are a little closer, but smaller. Tacony in Philly is the biggest and used to have good action. Fusco's is probably a good 1/2 hour and might have some action. You can probably Google the info to get to them.

Yes, there are a couple of rooms within 10 - 20 minutes from Valley Forge.

Fox and Hound is right up the street (around 1 - 2 miles) and they have around 6 - 7 nine foot diamonds. However, it cant be crowded and you may have to wait for a table.

Also, there is Markley billiards, I believe, that is around 15 - 20 minutes from the Radisson. They have several 9 foot tables (maybe 20 or so).

Lastly there is another pool hall approximately 10 - 20 minutes away that has 9 foot tables that I cannot remember the name of. They have around 10 - 15 nine foot tables.

Once you get to Valley Forge, there will be flyers all over the place regarding tournaments at pool halls close by. You should be able to find something that will meet your needs.

All the places mentioned are good, under non-Expo circumstances.

However, when the Expo comes to town, Markely is THE place to go. They stay open 24hrs a day, have midnight tournaments, and is where all the ACTION players end up. It has been that way for at least 10 years now. So while there are better choices if you want the best tables, or a quiet room, if you want action and things to watch or play in, Markely is the only room to go to during the Expo.

It is a dirty room, with worn cloth, but it is action.

If you want the best equipment, and a clean room, go to Main Line Billiards (Formerly Rack M Up Billiards), in Frazer PA. That is 15 min from the Expo in the opposite direction as Markely.

I've played in all these rooms for 15 years, as I'm from the area.

I stopped at a place my friend showed me on out way back one time it was Classique Billiards it was in Phenoxville right out side of Valley Forge. It's I believe about 10 to 15 minutes away. We went there about 9 or 10 pm and it wasnt really buisy but it was a decent place , pretty nice. Decent tables and the people and owner were friendly. They had said it was a room that Karen Kohr and some friends play out of also. But I didnt see them besides pictures on the wall. Hope this helps ,,,,ED

Agree with ya on Drexeline TC...Bob Maidhof runs a great room with 3 Diamond Pro-Am tables (exactly like the ones at Valley Forge)...2-10ft heated Chevillotte Three Cushion tables...and 2-8ft and 13-9ft Gold Crown tables...they are located in Drexel Hill at 5100 State Road....been there for over 20 years and all the tables are kept in top condition....

Drexeline is also a Host Club on the Mezz Pro-Am and Mezz Women's Tour and was where Corey Deuel began playing pool...

Holy Cow I didn't even think of asking. Hope DD gives me a break. Always wanted to play at Drexeline. Hope I can check that one off my list of places to see.

Wow- those rooms are all still opened. All but two of the rooms that were open in the 90's around Boston have closed. Back in the day when I had the All About Pool Tours there was a woman that played out of Markley that I had a big crush on but was always afraid to approach her. For the life of me I can't remember her name right this minute and it is driving me batty. Anyone have any idea.

Bob

I remember now...Neslie Ohair (?sp)

getting closer... any other suggestions on rooms or places to grub?

I need cheesesteak recommendations!

Pats an Geno's are tourist traps. Cheesesteaks are ok but there are better places...most of the poolhalls have been mentioned there are few other rinky dinky worn down pool halls...Tacony Billiards is probably the larger...i believe 35 tables an 4 cushion billiards....

If you want the original, with all the color of South Philly , then Pat's, but if you want the best, then Jim's.

Make sure you go to Termini's for the best canoli in the world! ;)

Sites to see

You also have to taste the canoli's at Izzo's Bakery located at 10th and Christan streets. They make outstanding pasteries also. While you are down that way stop in and have a good Italian dinner at Ralph's.

Absolute truth about tourist traps. One of them was outed a few years back for having Venezuelan beef that was WELL past the expiration date. Not that it matters. It's a cheesesteak.

If you go to Tacony billiards, head to Chink's Steaks at 6030 Torresdale Avenue. THOSE are the best.

thanks Geo, these are the types of places I want to check out. The places where the locals go for a good steak, not the tourist traps from food network

Check out the reviews on Yelp.com. Chink's is def more highly ranked. FYI - They're not open on Sunday.

Cheesesteaks

Blew me away when I read your thread and seen Chink's on Torresdale Ave. That place has been there for years. In my younger days I went there for lunch a few times a week, used to work near the Tacony Bridge. It's good to hear the place is still open. Also had some great times hanging out at Tacony Billiards and Pete Fusco's place.
