Pool Injuries

pool related injuries

Interesting topic. In fact I encountered a few pool related injuries in my pool career personally:
1) ripped muscle fibers in my left thigh - I played snooker and I played a shot which required me to extent as much as possible while standing on one foot - I slipped while shooting this shot and this caused rupture in my thigh muscle. It took me 3-4 months to recover from that.
2) inflammation of eyelid - I basically played about 40 hours of pool in 5 days in smoke-filled poolhall and my eyelid just started to burn so much I had to go to doc - the inflammation caused some kind of cyst to grow on the inside of my eyelid and it had to be surgically removed...
3) blockation of neck (too many times to count...)
4) cueball hit into the kidneys.... - once I played in this poolhall where they didnt maintain the tables at all and one player put cb on the spot to break the rack - but there was a hole on the spot so when he shot the break cb took off the table and hit me into the kidneys...basically I fell to the floor, my legs "switched off" - it was kinda funny because 5 mins ago the same player shot his break shot and cb flew like 20 centimeters near my head...we had quite a laugh about it..I told him that he had a killer instinct.... :D

One funny pool related accident was even reported on national news here 2-3 years ago. Some guys played on coin operated table and the cueball got stuck in the return mechanism. So one of the guys tried to reach it with his hand. He pushed his arm deeper and deeper into the return mechanism...and guess what...his arm got stuck too... :D :D :D they tried to pull his arm from the table for 45 minutes with no success. Finally they had to call emergency, so firefighthers unit came. Even they had trouble releasing his arm from the return mechanism so they decided to disassamble the table which finally helped them to release the guy... :D

lol

I've heard of a few pool related injuries that were pretty funny after the fact.

My buddy was playing in this little rinky dink bar and the 2 tables they had were pretty close together so I tried to cut the corner too close and banged his knee on the side of the table and had to sit down he was in so much pain...haha

I knew this girl who was breaking and she had a good break but this particular instance she tried to put to much force behind her break and caught her hand on the table as she was following through and broke her wrist...

The worst one I got was in college when I out my knuckles on the rail right on top of a lit cigarette some asshole put there. That was a hell of a nasty burn and right on my bridge hand index finger. Never put cigarettes on pool tables!!!!

Use the Bridge

I was stretched out for a shot on a barbox when my foot went out from under me. To keep from face planting into the slate I caught myself with my bridge hand and heard my shoulder make a crunching sound. I'm sure something is wrong with my rotator cuff since I have to be careful how I raise my arm over my head. Right now I can live with it but if it gets worse I might need surgery.
The moral of the story?

USE THE BRIDGE!!!

coin op slots

Mentioning the coin tables reminded me, the coin op slots! When I used to play in places with too many coin op tables jammed in them I had chronic bruises and notches in both legs from banging off of the coin op mechanisms sticking out. No big thing, but hitting that same tender spot over and over sure got old.

Can't remember seeing any threads on this topic, but then, I've been in Mr. Wilson's slammer for the past year and haven't been able to keep up with the posts, much less post myself, so forgive me if I'm spading old dirt.

Anyway, a recent injury in baseball got me thinking about pool and it's seeming safety. I'm guessing most serious injuries arise from fistfights, shootings, etc., all initiated over an argument about pool. Mostly in bars, I figure, with alcohol fueling the mix.

I once slammed my index finger into the rail while breaking, and while it stung for a while, it wasn't an injury. And I'm sure some drunks have stumbled over pool cues and broken some bones.

But is there such a thing as a legitimate pool injury? Worn-out knees, maybe? Flat feet?

Just askin'.

I guess you could say I have a serious "pool injury". Deteriorated disc disease brought on by carrying pool tables up and down steps for 15 years! It's damn near crippled me!

I once practiced for a couple of months to play in a pro event. Once I got to the tourney I went 2 and out and suffered a broken heart and some Shattered dreams. I wasn't able to look at a pool table without feeling queezy.
I am fully recovered now but it unfortunatley ended my pro career.

Oh let's see, the injuries I've sustained have been:

  • injured finger from hitting the rail (like you) in a stroke
  • worn skin off the index finger of my left hand from abrasive table cloth
  • had a case of "pool elbow" on my stroking arm
  • left shoulder pain from utilizing an imbalanced stance
  • had my feet slip out from under me while stretching for a shot (nailing the jewelz)
  • back spasms and strain from long matches
  • Been poke in the (or near enough) eye by stray cues

I'm sure there's more - I think a while about it...
