pool injuries

has anyone ever hurt them self playing pool, the only thing i can think of would be somebody pulling a muscel on a break:confused:

Years ago, trying to keep a level draw stroke I slamed my hand into the rail. Hard enough to split the skin with blood every where. :o Had to stop the match for about 10 minutes to stop the bleeding.

That is something you only want to do once.

Not while playing, but lost a match and went in bathroom, punched a wall that I thought was tin/aluminum and it was sold 1inch steel. Broken hand, reconstructive surgery taught me a few lessons.

I hope that one of those lessons was to go home and punch something that YOU own.

Lesson was to stop punching things and find a better way to deal with frustrations. :) Young and naive I was. But I learned the hard way.

I have ripped off my thumbnail twice removing balls from the pockets -lol- it hurt like hell - I'm sure many people have cut their hands/knuckles on the pockets or tore their clothes on tables that had sharp molding on the rails and/or pockets. Sometimes the plastic inside the pockets will get damaged and if you're not careful you can get a nasty cut or scrape on your hands or fingers.

I got to drive a friend to the hospital after getting hit in the eye with a cue ball.
He was standing at the foot rail end of the table at spectator distance when the guy breaking miss cued and sent the cue ball flying. I was right next to my friend when it hit him directly in the eye. It was a sick sound... kind of pop! Anyway the doc checked him out and he was OK but the breaker felt pretty bad. BTW it wasn't like we were standing to close, it was a league match with several people watching.

It did not happen to me and I did not see it. A friend of mind told me he was at a tournament, A player broke with his Meucci. It shattered below the joint as they are known to do. A piece flew off and cut a female spectator on the cheek. Not bad put drew blood.

since i take my shoes of and play barefoot in my socks, i've stepped on glass and cut my foot before. also i've done the same thing of hitting my hand into the rail on the break and breaking the skin.

I had a guy pick up a cue ball that someone had jumped off the table and toss it to me when I wasn't looking and I took it right in the forehead. Phenolic and bone don't connect well:eek:

Someone I knew from my local pool room, as the story goes was at a tournament, possibly the Glass City Open. And while racking the balls he slumped over the table and died on the table. Not sure of the exact cause but he did suffer from diabetes.
Doug may you RIP, my friend.

thats how I wanna go, except I want to be breaking, not racking ;)

and I want you to know I mean no disrespect to your friend, but I've always wanted to die doing something I love, pool, or playing guitar

When I am breaking from the felt if I grip too far towards the end of the cue I really hurt my wrist when I follow through. It hurts now :(

Injured liver, lmao. Had the same thing happen. Doc said to stop bending my elbow but that makes my stance too high.:)

One of my good (elder) friends did quite a bit of time many years ago for second degree murder. That occurred in a pool hall (or at least a bar with a few tables).

I guess pool turned out to be hard on the fellow he killed.

remind me to stay out of that pool hall:eek:

I made a failed attempt to change my stance. I was trying to twist to get my shoulders better aligned. It ended up putting too much stress on my knees. My knees are bad anyways, but I could feel the stress days after playing. It didn't hurt while I was playing, only afterwards.

Now, for a funnier story, I'll tell you about my friend who hurt himself bowling. We were at one of those "all you can bowl" things on a saturday night. I had to leave to meet a friend, and was taking this guy's wife home. We get in the car, and she somehow misses his call on her cell. I drop her off and I'm driving to meet my other friend, and she calls me. "Mikey's in the hospital!" Oh crap!

Turns out, just as we were walking out the door, he starts goofing off with one of those five pound little girl balls. Trying to throw it as hard as he can down the lane. He slips, falls flat on his back. Ball goes straight up in the air and hits the ceiling. He sees it coming down and tries to catch it!!!! He ended up "catching" his ring finger between the ball and hardwood floor. Doctor said the finger basically exploded.

The strange thing about it was that his wife had just bought him a new wedding ring for valentines day. I didn't know people did that, but it was sure convenient timing since they had to cut the original off at the ER!
