Pool Lessons in Tampa, FL

I'm looking to get a few lessons over the summer (once or twice a month) and was wondering if anyone knows of any instructors near Tampa, FL. I checked the BCA list of active instructors but found the closest one is James Sellars in Bradenton. Does anyone know of any other instructors and if so, how much do they charge per hour? I'm sure there are more out there, I have just yet to find them.

Ray Martin

Ray Martin, former world champ and Hall of Famer, used to advertise in Billiard Digest that he was available for lessons (probably given in his home). I did a Google search and found his contact info.

Click the link

I'm not sure what he charges. He's in Largo, which is just across the Bay from Tampa.

Tony Crosby (tonyc on this forum), UPA top 16 professional gives lessons. He is in the Palm Harbor area. You can pm him here or get his contact info from www.poolsniper.com

I live in Tampa and don't have any spiffy credentials, but buy me lunch and I'd be happy to spend a few hours helping you with your game. I'll buy lunch if you don't think it was worth it.

You live that close to Ray Martin, you gotta have a screw loose if you dont find him. Call CM's Place in Seminole, Ray goes there often or Eric's pool room in Clearwater, thy know how to get in touch with him. Good luck...

You might want to also try Rodney Morris. He's house pro for Capone's in Spring Hill 352-688-9965 less than an hour from Tampa. Earl Strickland was there too, but I heard he went back to NC.

If you call some of the local poolrooms they will know who teaches around Tampa. Bakers, Planet 9-ball, and about 25 others in the Tampa bay area.

If you can get Ray Martin...go for it. He's a nice guy, easy to talk to, and down to earth.Johnnyt

mszelis...I would certainly agree with the above posts. Just fyi, I am also down here in FL, vacationing in Indian Shores for the rest of this week, and would be happy to come work with you in Tampa, if you desire. You can PM me, if you're interested.:D

I would love to take you up on that offer but I'm in Clemson, SC until my semester is over. My hometown is Tampa, Fl which is where I'll be spending my summer.

Your best bet would be Tony Crosby (www.tonycrosby.com). He is house pro at strokers in Palm harbor and has given lessons to some of the better known names i.e. Helenda Thornfeldt and Monica Webb both top 6 players on WPBA.

Gud Luck.

Buddy Hall plays in Tampa, I forgot the poolrooms name, find Florida Ave. or blvd and about 10000 north there is a major east/west street, go east about two blocks after the freeway, on the left, its a "real" pool room, NY Blackie also frequents here, Florida runs parallel to this freeway that runs directly north towards Tallahassee.

I'd second that. I had a lesson from Ray more years ago than I can {or care to} remember. Not too long before he headed south, as I recall.

Really? That musta been a LONNNG time ago, then.. I was assigned to MacDill AFB in about 2001, and Fatso's was not a place I liked taking my wife, even then. Oh, no doubt, it had that "pool hall" ambience, but the tables didn't seem to be particularly well cared for, and kind of a rough crowd. And I've played pool in the Middle East, so trust me, I know what a rough crowd is.

I dunno.. It just seemed like the sort of place where large dug deals might go down out in the parking lot..

But then again, what pool hall doesn't? :D :D :D
