Hello all,

I recevied Billiards Digest and just went through the 9 or issues and found about 27 pages (NOT KIDDING) of information that could be useful. I enjoy articles by Dr Dave articles and Larry Schwartz. Anyways, I digress.

This seems to be pretty much a rip off. I could care less about how Jane Doe won a match wearing a pink indian headress or some other nonsense.

Can anyone recommend a good billiard periodical, if there is one?

Thanks

Dan

good periodical

The only billiard periodical you need is right here. Your posting in it. All the updates u need are found on the home page.

Save a tree , read AZB

I don't understand...It's a rip off, but you found 27 pages of useful information? What do you want 27 pages of useful information for free?

Explain yourself.

LOL Jason,

No, nothing is free, my point was that out of over 500 pages of total magazine, 27 pages were useful. So basically those 27 pages cost over a $1.00 each.

Okay, that makes more sense.

As far as covering tournaments and such, I think they absolutely should. Would you pick up a sports illustrated magazine and only see instructions on batting and fielding (it's baseball season)? I don't think so.

Honestly, even though we all love pool, how hard is it to come up with something new to write about? Pool is rather simple compared to some other sports. I think that is why we have so many lame threads here on AZ. Just about everything has been talked about or written about several times and rehashed again even after that. How many more aiming systems can we come up with?

Just as all other media today (i.e. newspapers especially), the internet and web devices has severely hurt the publishing industry. It is a very tough business and not much room for competition. I think BD has done a great job and hope they will continue for many years to come.

"Good" is a subjective term. What's good for one is useless or not interesting to another. If you were able to find something useful, then maybe it was worth the price you paid. Someone else out there was waiting for the information on those other pages you didn't find useful for yourself. Publishing is not an easy task, and you have to appeal to as large an audience as you can to be successful. "Billiards" covers a lot of territory.

i hear what you're saying but a buck a page isn't bad if that info really was helpful. lessons are more expensive than that and if the info helps you out you could actually win some cash via tourneys or gambling and recoup that money.

Not only that, but NewStroke paid $600+ for pool school already. Paying $2.50 for a pool magazine is pretty cheap (look at the magazine prices on the newstand). About tournament coverage...the poolmags have a 2 month lead time, for publication, which is why they can't cover things, and be up to date (everyone already knows the outcome from here). Lastly...buying a pool magazine is, in a small way, supporting our industry (I subscribe to 3). If you don't like the mags, DON'T BUY THEM. Pretty simple...

If you're looking for instruction (hints on how to play), I think a much better source (as far as expense) is books. Magazines have a little "how to" but due to the limited space, the articles often cannot go into the same depth as in a book.

If you're looking for sort of a smorgasbord of pool bites, then I think a magazine will work for you. Current events, personalities, historical vignettes, opinion, politics are there, along with limited instruction. If that's not what you're after, I don't think you will find any pool magazine a good deal.

Billiards Digest is head and shoulders above Inside Pool, both of which I receive. The articles by George Fels and Mike Shamos justify it's worth alone, in my opinion.

If you want the be-all, end-all of billiards information, buy The Pro Book, The Advanced Pro Book, and The Pleasures of Small Motions. That should keep anybody less than a A- player busy for a loooooong time, it has me.

Eric...I have to disagree. Each of the magazines have their strong points, and weak points. Like I said, in a previous post, I subscribe to all 3 majors (BD, Inside Pool, & Pool & Billiard Magazine), more to support the industry (and because I ENJOY them), than expecting to learn some new 'earth-shaking' information. Many times, I am pleasantly surprised to see instructional points that are dead on exactly the same thing I have been teaching for decades. I do like Shamos' and Fels' articles, but I also like Tom Shaw, Fred Agnir, and several other columnists, in other mags too.

Scott,

I agree with what your saying, but Inside Pool just aint what it used to be, all apologies to Fred. IP was awesome when it first came out though.

Read the magazines. Look at the pictures. See what is new. Look at the names of the players winning the tournaments. See if you can match up some faces. All very helpful in not getting hustled.

Yes there is a lot of "wasted" pages but without them the magazines would cost more.

The magazxines are a cheap price for info and something to look at while on the thrown then tear out the pages you don't want and use them for AW.

As far as periodicals, BD is stealing...no doubt about it!!

For what the three subscriptions could cost you, you could get a couple of DVD'S. Plus, one poster is right about having the world at your fingertips...AZ forums ROCK!!!

Sorry, BD is not stealing. In fact, I bet they are struggling to survive.
The production cost of producing a high end/low run magazine is enormous. Any Joe Schmoe can produce a DVD or start a web site for very low costs. Let's keep George Fels, Larry Schwarts and the few others that work for/with BD employed.
