Pool play that irritates you!

Really? In my experience newer players have no clue when to call a timeout. They usually wait until they have messed up and hooked themselves, at which point there isn’t much the coach can do.
Time outs are often called just to cool down the shooter. I think all majors disallow that but in less formal situations Football? it's simply an interruption.

Agreed. While I don't think it would be a good idea either, a better argument could actually be made for the exact opposite, where the player would never be allowed to call a timeout themselves and where it could only be called by a teammate (and the odds say at least one or more of the teammates is a better player).

It's common sense really. Who can better judge what situation best warrants the use of the one timeout the player gets, a poor player, or a good player? A much better player will of course be much better at assessing when and how a timeout can be put to the best use. The only time the player at the table might realistically be the best judge of that for themselves is when they are at least reasonably close to being as good (and as knowledgeable) a player as the best player on their team is, and that will only be the case a small percentage of the time.

There are of course teams where everybody on the team is a crappy player with bad judgement, and in that case the player is just screwed any which way you cut it lol.
