Pool players whose lives should be made into HBO movies ?

Thanks for Remembering

Tom Brown was the first person I thought of as well. Early in his teens, he had lost one of his eyes to cancer. He had no depth perception, but it never hindered his game. He and John DiToro were one hell of a team on the road. Sadly, Tom had another bout with cancer, and he passed away about 2 years ago.
David, Thanks for remembering Tom. He was for certain made of tough stuff.

I remember Tom came to Germany in the late 80's and wound up in Munich playing Oliver Ortmann and another Tom, Tom Storm of Sweden. He was shooting some damn fine 9 Ball and making some Deutsche Marks!! Nice person, polite and thoughtful. The Germans were awestruck he played so well with his "eine auge" one eye.

Thanks again for remembering Tom.

Cicero Murphy

Cicero Murphy. A gritty movie done in black and white of his early years up to his later years. He could not compete in world events until 1965 because of his race...he won a world title on his first attempt... Plenty of story for a movie with some universal appeal as a story of triumph. Other old time greats would be in the movie and if the cast was well chosen, they could be justly done with a good script while not being the main characters. The movie would not be a civil rights preachy movie, but would simply tell his story, what he went through, and how he fit in with the other legends at that time.

My same answer from a previous thread on this subject....

I agree that this is a good choice for a pool bio-pic. In the aspect of making pool more popular as TCOM did, it would need to be fictional with alluding to any number of top playing legends to have mass audience appeal. If I can ever afford to buy a new laptop and the most current edition of Final Draft, I'll get right on it.

Paul Sorvino to play Steve Mizerak and Drew Carey to play Fats.

How about more of the women, Jennette Lee, Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, Gerta, Viviain? How did they get so into billiards, what about any relationships, kids, family, etc. that are players also?

I would never in a MILLION YEARS want to watch a remake of THE HUSTLER!

Tho I love Danny and he is extremely charasmatic he aint no Jackie Gleason....more important than that is the fact that NO ONE can play Paul Newman as Fast Eddie....it just aint happening and it would be blasphemy anyways.

If they remade that they might as well let M. Night Shalaman direct it.....he makes good horror movies and that idea sounds horrible as they come.

Too bad Newman is dead b/c Tom Cruise sucks my bawls in TCOM

Tom Cruise can suck your balls, but i would bet that if Tom ever did a third pool movie in the series, it might just be the best thing to happen to this game in a long time and i would bet that you'd go and see it.

If I wanted to make money it would have to be Jeanette Lee, for pool probably Fats.

I've recently re-read a favorite by Dave McCumber "Playing off the Rail" about a 'backers' veiw of a road trip from California to Washington State through Canada and East to NY, NY and down the coast, back through the MidWest and then back to the West Coast, Vegas, LA and then finally Reno.

The story was based on Mr. McCumber's real experiences, staking, Tony Annigoni of San Franciso area in the early 90s.

Lots of great players mentioned in this book from all over the USA and Canada.

If you haven't read this book, I recommend finding a copy and taking a good read.

IMO "Pool movies" are only popular if you can find a HOT actor(s) to capture the 18-28 audiance. The story has to be decent, not great, but decent. Just some HOT actors and actresses to get the media's attention and draw new players into the pool rooms. That is if therer are any left after this depression is over.

Scotty Townsend has enough stories of his life endeavors to make a interesting movie plus maybe even a sequel:smile:

No doubt, that Scotty should be at the top of the list. Hell, he is funny enough and talented enough to play himself. They might have to get an interpreter or have subtitles if he really gets it going.

In a group conversation, several people were discussing Scotty's uniqueness and talent and someone said, "Hell, you can't even understand a word he says" (must have been from up north) and another guy said, "Well, if he gets mad at you, you sure won't need an interpreter".

Efren...

if not Efren...then Bustamente...there would be a story with it's ups and downs...from playing in Philippines, Germany, US...being contender so many times...true fighter....losing a child during a tournament and picking himself up from that....respect!

You right about that Joey...I can't tell you how many times Scotty got going telling a storie & all I could do was laugh & nod my head which in reality I had no clue what he was talking about..just catching a word or 2 in the conversation...But you knew it had to be funny as much as Scotty was laughing & cutting up about it..So you just laugh along with him..

Wait until you get a good buzz going and ask him if it is true that he knows the real immortal, Merlin and then ask him to prove it to you. :yeah:

good times...

Greenleaf, Efren, Mosconi. Hey is'nt there supposed to be a movie about Kid Delicious. I know the books good :)

I would like to see a movie about Bucktooth and Ronnie Allen on a road trip together. Now that truly would be a comedy.

I agree Dave, Greenleaf would make an entertaining movie. However it would probably paint a picture that is typically associated with pool, the troubled lowlife hustler.....I'd still like it though

The movie would consist of several players and the hooks would be each has their own con. Regional cons typically are realistic. The main plot would be how a bunch of con artist pool players somehow become friends and have to work to get out of a con by some big money Con Artist. Aside from being a superhero story the main lures would be in the traditional origins to their ethnicity. The reason they all got stuck together would be because of a big tournament, (its a Bruce Lee). Its a story of people coming together to overcome adversity.

Revitalizing old characters like Felson, Fatts are always fan favorites.

The HBO part would be something over the top. Like they are secluded on a cruise ship for a pool tournament, or the first airline cruise. One character just isn't enough for me. Even better would be the RL pool players play the villains and actors do the acting.
