Pool, poker & pain

I even like Joe Rogan guy trains at a high level in MMA and plays pool how's your poker game Joe?

Amazing, my three favourite things!

I play poker A LOT, I love pool and while I can't fight I don't miss an MMA pay per view.... loving it!

The population in England loves snooker (they prob know most of the players too). The population in the US doesn't know pool exists and probably still can't name a single pool player other than Minnesota Fats.
Again, the missing element for pool is money.

It's a chicken or the egg. You'll never have pool arrive without money and unless it arrives, they'll never play for big money.
It could grow incrementally with smart, patient backing. But it won't get that without some smart leadership - until then we'll just see more fast money hustles by minor promoters.

Poker is entertaining
Without the big money it would be less visible than pool (again). It's the proof of "if you fund it, they will come".

MMA is entertaining
Mayhem. Only sex sells better.

I suggest that pool has a lot to learn from poker and mma and could only benefit from being associated with them.
I agree there are lessons in the success of poker and MMA, but i'm not a visibility at any cost advocate. I'd rather have pool remain obscure and semi-respectable than become a sideshow attraction.

Look at the following darts gets around Europe and in certain parts of the world.

It is a sport that England has made massively popular by setting up a well funded and structured league.

I love watching it now, it is very addictive. It has led to me and my mates splitting our drinking time in the garage between darts and pool.

A pool league/tour could follow the darts model given the pub game similarities between the two.

I would like to see you, Joey and Spidey in a one pocket round robin with Ray streaming it. It could be called the "Aiming System Showdown." Hook it up!!!
I'd like to see firsthand how both of 'em play. Of course the entertainers (us) would need guaranteed money + residuals and the usual perqs. I like fresh fruit and flowers in my trailer every morning.

I'm a little confused by the whole concept of mixing these particular 3 disciplines together. In my mind, MMA just doesn't fit with the other two. I just have a feeling you're going to end up with mediocre performances across the board which will ultimately draw criticism from fans of the sports.

Sounds like a circus. Throw in a bunch of barely dressed women for each event, maybe some jugglers, and you may have a show.

That's actually a good idea. If we can get half-naked women to juggle in between rounds or racking or dealing --- that'd be pretty sweet.

I'll add "Rayjay" to the credits of the show.

Is this the same Rayjay or schtooped Kim Kardashian on video? If so... big fan... big fan ;)

I guess I am just getting cranky in my old age but this shit is getting old.

I came back into pool about 2006. About every 6-8 months since then this exact thread happens. Its never actually any production footage or even a sizzle real....its a press release about releasing a press release talking about what could possibly happen if everything happens.

Here's an idea....go do something then come tell us about it. Until then its all simply noise.

Here is a little something I learned from being involved in a reality show project that actually has a real production company and real footage in the can....when the project is actually picked up by a production company they don't say shit about it till its sold. Why? Because so many people are out there doing shows. If the idea is that good a knock off can be made and sold before the first guys get theirs sold. The fact that this idea has been around for so long without getting picked up means its not going to I dont care what the next press release says about who's on board to do whatever.

The idea really isnt that great once you get past the title. Poker is on the down turn ratings wise, world class MMA is on almost every night on some channel so why would any network pay $200K-$300K an episode for mediocre players to do a bad job at two out of three games?

If the show goes more power to them but go do something finally...I mean shit...FIVE YEARS plus of press releases ? Seriously?

There's no doubt it's taken a long time to get to this point. It's been just over a year since Blair got Doug Stanley on board, so for all intensive purposes, he's about 14 months into real development.

I guess you're right in that you can be quiet about it; but whenever I see a press release for PPP I post it and like to talk about it because it's really the best odds on the money for pool to get any real TV slot.

Unless, of course, someone thinks something else will be on a season-long pool show first...

You said it...pool is boring as hell. The best shot for a pool show is just following Earl around. Seriously. One guy I know who does TV things for a living actually was interested. Problem is Earl is Earl and who is gonna bet that kinda money on him?

Somewhere in a Dart forum they are talking about the same shit....just like in the Horseshoe forum and the Water Skiing forum.

Its actually really easy to just get a show on TV. You shoot the show, buy the time to run it and sell the ads to cover the nut. Bass fishing has done it for 30 years.

is poker still popular on TV? Maybe the golden years are gone? In Italy it wasn't never that popular.

In your opinion. In my opinion this will go nowhere.

It also seems to me that you post these because you have a personal affilliation with the promoter, and that may also cause you to believe that this is the "best odds". I wonder if Jim Murnak agrees with you ...

I'm friends with Blair, but I have zero affiliation with the show. I'm clearly a pool fan and I'm also a big poker fan and MMA nut.

I believe it's the best odds because of the team Blair has in place now (two Emmy-award-winning producers). I wish Jim the best in everything he does and I'm a big fan of his work. I wasn't aware he was trying to get his show on network tv.

I said it in Mark's thread yesterday: Whoever follows around Earl with a camera is a stone-cold winner. Even if Earl "is Earl" and sits on the curb propping up his head with both hands with pouty lips>>>> people are going to love to watch it.

I'd love to watch him wander around Vegas trying to buy some smoke before a huge match, gets sold oregano and continues on a rant: "I GOT ROBBED!!! I GOT ROBBED!!!"

I mean, there are SO many possibilities. When Blair's show kicks off, I hope Earl can be brought in as a commentator:

"Pool is a game... it ain't no SPORT! Getting a knee to your liver-- that's a sport!"

Darts, Draw, and Dropkicks?

Slalom, Stud, and Sleeper-holds?

I couldn't think of anything on this one. I was close, but closeness only counts...
