I've seen people on this forum do both, each with beautiful results. The question is:

1) Buy a house with wife that has enough room for a pool table
2) Buy a smaller house with wife and build a pool room in the backyard

there's no right answer.

big house is ready to have table, but you will be heard easier.

Backyard needs to be built and is more of a getaway.

Having a table at home is the nutzzzzzzzzz

I don't have the skill to build a room...so I vote for the bigger house. That's my "if I won a lottery" plan, anyway.

I bought the house sans wife. I hope that's all right. ;)

I hate when I'm looking into buying something and someone points out its resale value but in this case it's something to think about. A second free-standing, livable space will certainly increase the value of the property but are people going to want to buy it? I know that if I weren't a pool player, I would pass because I would have no use for the extra building.

(It's probably a non-issue and I've only bought one house so my opinion isn't worth much to begin with.)

You can put your weed in it.

Where is the option of "Buy a big house and put the pool room in a building out back using the money you saved by NOT having a wife"?

I had an a table out back in a heated shop; now I have a one in the basement.
Its nicer putting on slippers and walking to the basement than it was shoveling a path through the snow to the building.

I have seen some awesome in house pool rooms but none quite compare to the feel of a detached pool room that is built from ground up to be a pool room/loung with the bar, the jukebox, the whole works.

You get somewhat of a sense of "going out" when going to your little pool room in the back yard when it is a detached thing like that, instead of just "going downstairs to play pool". I personally would love to build a private pool room with the bar, the old school juke box with 50's and 60's tunes, lounge style seating, fairly dark lighting but for over the table, ect... I have never seen that done well in a "inside the house" pool room quite like it can be done in a building built for that exact purpose.

not much for options, what about a garage or workshop?
i'm especially not keen on number 1. any wife i get i better not be able to fit a pool table anywhere in her.:p

..........

I have had both.

My first house had a detatched garage and I put an old Gandy inside. It took "effort" to go play. You had to consider the weather and humidity. When my wife was in the market for a new home, my only stipulation was it had to have a private gameroom for a new Diamond. She found the house and I have the entire second floor gameroom. A couple of months later I bought a new 9' Diamond Pro. I play an awful lot more pool now that my table is inside.

It's a decision that you can't change your mind about, that's for sure. My first house was full of compromises, having come from the apartment mindset of "move in 6-12 months if I don't like it." There were several things I learned from that house, but the 2 that stuck out the most were: minimum 2 car garage, non-negotiable, and there has to be an area that can be devoted to a pool table without sacrificing another room, like the living room or dining room. For what it's worth, the in-house poolroom is excellent. I don't think I'd play as much if I had to go to a separate building.

Well, It's a landslide! I told the girl about the poll and got her approval (about an internal room with a pool table, not fitting one inside her)

Speaking from experience. Either have a basement where you can build a man cave or a separate building where the boys can party.

In the house. First off, it is probably just a little more convenient, and second, if you ever have to sell the house, buyers may not want a separate building in the yard and you might not sell it as quick.

Either way you have it, you still have a wife in the equation. So no matter where the table is, remember....you can run, but you cant hide. :)
