Some reasons why pool is one of the hardest sports/games to get to or close to the top shelve. In most sports like baseball, golf, basketball, football, etc you only have to think of a few things before hit, throw, run, or shoot. Just think what hast to go through your mind in pool just walking around the table or standing in back of your next shot.

What pocket to shoot for that allows me to get position for next ball?
What part of the pocket do I need to aim for?
Find the contact point on the OB.
What speed do I have to hit the CB?
If I make the shot and miss position long or short do I have a shot or a good safe?
If it’s a low percentage shot how can I not leave a shot if I miss and at the same time have a shot if I make it?
Do I need to use English, draw, or follow? How much?
Find the line of aim. One of if not the most important thing you’ll do so far IMO.

The above are most, but not all the things you need to think about or do before you even get in position to shoot. This is for one shot. You have to do this and make the shot and have another shot about 900+% of the time at the higher pro level. If your playing 14.1 and need 100 ball run you need to make each shot you choose to shoot at a 1000% rate or 100 for 100 times.

If you get a hit 1 out of 3 in baseball your at 333%=top pro. You can do the math on the rest of the sports/games to see what % you need to be at the top of that game. In most other games/sports you can miss a shot and have a chance to recover like in golf and most other games. In pool you miss you sit down and maybe not get another time at the table.

Now step into, slide into, pivot into, or dance into your stance. Another half dozen or so things have to be executed right before you pull the trigger. Johnnyt

I believe gi=oing up against a 300lb linebacker on steriods requires far more consideration.

left, right, left..oh shit!

Playing goal in ice hockey at a high level is pretty demanding... Trust me I know these things ;)

Which is SO completely different than long range shooting:

Where is the target?
Is the target clear?
How far away is the target?
What is the angular elevation of the target?
What elevation settings do I dial into the scope?
What does the wind look like?
What windage do I dial into the scope?
Load round
Place cross hairs on target
hold on line
Is the wind like I set the scope or has it changed and I have to hold off?
Is the target moving, and if so how far to hold off?
squeeze trigger
bang
multisecond delay
gong!

Not sure I agree with this.
I would say tennis is harder, for one. (watch one long rally at the French Open)

I was just about to say the same thing...same amount of decisions, but you have 1.5 seconds to make them and execute. Seems to me the top pool pros don't have to go through such a conscious deliberation to the level you describe...kind of why they're top pros.

Not knocking the thread, I just can't agree that pool is so much more complex than any number of other sports, many of which move at a much faster pace. I think we individually make pool much more complicated than it really is or needs to be, based on our skill level, experience and comfort.

Fast and Straight

There are competitive shooting sports that require more planning, just as much precision with a time element being of equal value to precision.

I suspect Hu may know a little about this.

top shelf is hard to achieve at anything, do not believe this holds anymore for pool then other sports.

top shelf pool players run over 100 balls. top shelf hitters bat over .325

things arent all black and white like you make them. difficulty of making 100 balls in a row, is no where close to batting a 1000 in a season, i would say pool equivalent to batting 1000 is not missing one shot in tournament play pool in an entire year. both scenerios are impossible.

many baseball players have batted a 1000 in 1 game the comparison you make is ridiculous at best.

No doubt in my mind that to reach the top level in baseball is tougher than making the top level in pool.

But really, apples & oranges here.

I remember watching a game with my dad. I said the guy at bat wasn't any good because he was barely above .200. Dad replied that he was a damned good player, because; "This is the big leagues, and he is there."

As usual, Dad was right.

(edit) While we're on the topic of sports that require a high level of concentration...let's not leave out motorsports. To drive a race car at the ragged edge of adhesion for a long time? That requires top concentration with a severe penalty for an instant of brain fade.
