Poolhall does not replace chalk?

I have my own box of chalk. But if I see chalk on the table, I will use it.

I never thought that taking a piece of chalk from a pool hall is "stealing," although I have never intentionally take a piece of chalk away.

I have the habit of putting the chalk in my pocket when I play, so I do not have to keep looking for chalk. It is kind of like having my own chalk holder, so sometimes I forget, and will take it home with me.

On the other hand, when I am done playing, and if I find a piece of chalk in my pocket when I am still in a pool hall, even if it was my own, I usually just put it back on the table.

I just never realize anyone would consider a person a "thief" if he takes a piece of chalk away from a pool hall. I usually just assume chalk is very cheap, and they wear out, so it is there provided as a service to the customers. I do sometimes forget to return the chalk, but I never would try to "steal" a piece of chalk. I think suggesting that about a customer is quite rude.

Good players don't drill holes in the chalk. That's the wear pattern of bangers.
Tap-tap-tap.
That is the absolute truth. I might expand it a little to say "knowledgable players" rather than just "good players". I'm not a real good player ('C', I guess), but I know how to properly apply chalk.

Maybe they were reselling it. lol. I don't blame you for being mad, even if they own a table at home, what are they going to do with 20 pieces of chalk.
I will confess, I have on occassion, when the piece in my chalker was too far gone and I forgot to change it at home, grabbed a piece, but that is quite rare and I figure I give them enough business it's okay.
Lately the place I play has been very good about it, though it doesn't matter to me as a bring my own.

I was remembering this thread on Tuesday night. I had a customer come up and ask me for some new chalk. Which was funny because I had just walked around the room and made sure each table had at LEAST 2 pieces of chalk on it. When I walked by this guys table he had 5 pieces of chalk on it. Keep in mind that the two guys playing on this table are THE ONLY GUYS IN THE ROOM! No one else. So they stop playing after 20 minutes. They pay thier time and I ask where the chalk was I loaned them. They tell me they left it on the table...I say no problem. I walk back in the pool room...and the chalk is missing on FIVE tables! Every piece off the tables, off the shelving, off the coat rack shelf...everything. Over 20 pieces gone....While I was steaming...I thought back to this thread asking why owners are cheap about chalk..lol. I remember thinking...THIS is why I hate giving out new chalk all the time. Even though we go through it by the gross. Thanks for letting me vent. Thats all.
Almost all the pool halls in Michigan keep the chalk in the rack of balls and not on the tables or shelves...usually just two pieces and they ask for them if you don't have them...

Buy and use a chalk color that really clashes with the cloth on the table. He will get tired of all the skid marks. If he complains to you about it then you tell him that is the color of chalk you have because of the table you have at home and if he wants you to use blue then he should suppy a decent piece.

I always use my own chalk & for this week's league game I decided to take a couple of older pieces to put on the table for my teammates to use, because there's never been any decent stuff provided. Lo & behold, good chalk was handed out! I think there must've been 5 or 6 pieces on our table alone!

Too many pool bums around.

I can relate to this. Have an "acquaintance" who probably has a half bushel of chalk at home and NO table. Would guess he also has 3 or 4 of the good quality bar box cueballs (the green aramith logo). What a jerk/dork/cheap-ass/scum! I'm afraid this is a common problem too .

While I'm at it for those slobs out there: don't slap the chalk on the rail upside down!

By the way, I always carry my own chalk.

Certainly that is going to happen , and I don't think a person on earth could call anyone a thief for mistakenly pocketing a peice of chalk, but walking around and taking every peice of chalk in the place , putting it in their pockets and walking out is a thief, sorry.

The chalk belongs to the hall , if someone "intentionaly" takes it , even though it is cheap, seems to me they would be stealing it? did you ever see a sign there "take the chalk home when finished"?

I don't even own a pool room and this brings my blood to a boil....idiots...

Just curious, let's say you put two pieces of chalk on a table or with a set of balls, and nobody actually stole any.....with your typical mix of bangers and better players, how long would it last before it got to the point where it would need to be replaced?

I would say just let them know and they will probably buy some right away or they just dont think that it is that important...I dont ever realy care personally because i always buy and use my own. I just like having a good chalk evertime that you dont get with a chalk that a hundred different tips have been in. (Kinda like women dont you think) I wont go there! lol

Why would my local poolhall not buy any new chalk? For months now the chalk at the poolhall where I play leagues has not replaced the chalk. I know chalk is really cheap ! I always bring my own chalk now. But how can management be so cheap as not to buy and put out new chalk. I hate getting chalk on my ferrule, and when the chalk runs all the way down, why don't they just replace it !!!

Because they are cheap, because they do not care about their customers, Because the owner is not paying attention to their Business.

It could be any of those things, but I will bet it is certainly one of them!!!

I just remembered, after moving to SC, and playing in bar-type venues a lot, I began putting my initials on my own chalk. If it was picked up, I could show that I had marked it as mine, less arguments about whether it was house chalk, or not.

Good idea.... I'll have to start doing that.

I carry my own Masters and try to remember to take it home with me. On occasion I've been confronted by the help as I put the chalk in my cue case and then I get to loudly "splain" to them exactly what has transpired. They don't look forward to me coming there and I don't often go.

I have made it a habit to play with my own chalk, and not only that but I have a box of black masters chalk, I keep a piece in my pocket chalker and keep the rest of the box in my cue case to let my friends use because I don't trust the chalk at the bars I play at. And as far as chalk 'thiefs' I have had people try and swipe my chalk and pocket chalker if I set it down on the ledge surrounding the room that the tables are in while I am taking a shot.

Sad to say but it's true, I have had a lot of people who come in while I am playing and they have their own cues and ask if I have any chalk because the pieces we get with the balls just aren't worth it and I sell them a cube for a quarter or so, or I give it to them if I know them and usually it helps break the ice and I meet more people that way lol.

Yeah, it's rediculous but in the end it is probably cheaper to just pick up your own box or gross box of chalk and either leave it at home or whatever and take it with you to the hall because thats the only guarantee that you will have a good supply of fresh chalk.

I don't know really. Wouldnt know how to guess, even. I do know we put out at least a dozen new pieces every night (since I work night shift) and I am sure my family puts out a lot during the day. I also know I pick up at least 3-4 pieces every night off the floor that have been crushed due to someone dropping it on the floor and then not picking it up:mad: . Then they walk on it. Only a small percentage actually gets "worn out" due to actual use. Probably 30% if I was going to guess:confused: . And Pushout is correct about using black chalk on someone elses table, just means I have to stop what I am doing an clean the table right then or I hear about it all night long. :(

Actually the reason is because I have not seen many people at all using the black chalk, plus I have been able to find it at a little cheaper price than the regular chalk. As far as using it on other peoples tables I try to clean it up as best I can, most places don't mind either way.

i just came up with a answer to your problem. let your league captin take up the cost of a 144 count of chalk and let him give it out at each event. problem solved. next question????:D :D :D :D :D
