Pop goes the tip

I bought a new shaft to experiment with the white diamond tip. The shaft has a 1 piece phenolic tip on it. I flattenend the phenolic tip. it was very flat. I roughed both the WD tip and the ferrule with 80 grit sand paper. Then I scored both the ferrule and the WD tip with a razor blade, making a cross hatch pattern on both. Sort of tic tac toe pattern.

I used Gorrilla glue. Let it set 24 hours under some pressure and shaped the WD tip. Looked great, held up well during shaping.

First shot that was a little off center on a cue ball...off pops the WD tip.

ARRGGG!!!! What did I do wrong? What can I do to glue the already shaped tip back onto the ferrule and keep it from poping off again?

I have read of others using a threaded piece of rod to screw the tip to the ferrule. Seems pretty hard when the tip is already very short.

Ideas?

Give up...........I could never get the white diamond to stick to a ferrule for very long. I called the guy that makes them and he sent more.....lmao.......more of the same. They hit well, but they just don't take adhesive. And I tried everything the maker told me.
 
I have two that were put on with super glue gel. One is on a LBM ferrule and the other is on whatever ferrule comes standard on the steath jump cue. Both been going strong for about a year now. Never had a problem with either one. Maybe its the ferrule material.
 
One thing that comes to mind....Did the ferrule get faced off flat and by roughing the tip did you change the flatness of it surface? No matter what you use its gonna pop off if its not flat...ive had no problems with the WD tips using super glue gel and LBM ferrule.....My 2 cents Dave
 
two things

Two things I don't like about Gorilla glue for most applications. One is that it expands as it dries; good for some applications, bad for most. The other thing is that it needs some moisture to work well. Too little and it doesn't stick, too much is sure to be bad too. How much moisture do you need?

Superglue style glue works pretty well if it is fresh but it needs a little moisture too. About all you can do is buy from a place with a lot of turnover or buy from a supplier. After six months on your shelf, pitch it. It isn't worth putting a tip on with and taking a chance.

Refitting an already shaped tip is a pain in the rear. I generally pitch them too, even layered tips.

Its probably the ferrule. It wouldn't stick to my predator ferrule.
 
i've had a heck of a time getting them to stick to a mezz powerbreak ferrule. i think the newer wd's bond better than the old ones, that was why they changed it. i tried both cyano gel and devcon epoxy, both popped off after about 10-15 breaks. i tried jb kwik weld on the recommendation of some of the cuesmiths on here. have to give it more time to see if it will hold
 
I use cheap industrial super glue, and my WD sits on my breaker since october 07. The ferrule is the cheap generic plastic kind, and not capped.

I've been using Superglue Gel for years and it works great. The only other product I have used is "Gelbond" I ran out of superglue and my wife said to try her glue they use for fake fingernails and that stuff works great on plastics and composites of all kinds!

Glue

I have always had good luck (never had a tip come off with it) with the Superglue they sell at Kwik Trip. In fact, recently, they switched to a new type dispenser that does not clog after 1 use.

when i bought my first batch of white diamonds from joe a couple years ago, he told me to use super glue gel.
of the 15 to 20 i've installed , only had one come off (that i know of)
refaced, reglued, and it's still on.
it was my own jumpbreak it came off:rolleyes:
that was at least a year and a half ago.
did joe also tell you super glue gel???????
i've never put one on a predator, you might be right about the ferrule
 
I had white diamond pop off my break cue after being installed by a local repair place after only 3 weeks.

I used some scotch tape, a post-it note and some krazy glue to put it back on and never had a problem with it after that.

I use Loctite Super Glue GEL, and I was using it before talking to Joe. He recommended a more expensive Loctite, I can't remeber if it was 404 or another number , but it did not work either.
 
The phenolic ferrule is on a Fury j/b shaft. The instructions send with the WD tip said to use "Standard set epoxy or Super Gel".

I guess my next attempt will be to use the super gel. I just ASSUMED the Gorilla blue would be better.

There is a huge shear force on the tip when hitting the cb ball off center. Its actually amazing anything will hold a hard tip to a hard surface. I know Kevin Varney creates a threaded end on his hard tips...then screws and glues the tip into the ferrule. Thats a much better way to combat the shear forces.

That particular tip does not glue well to all ferrules. Joe would not tell me what material he uses, so I don't even try to use them anymore.

me too, loctite gel
my personal cue has a canvas phenolic ferrule with white diamond on it
maybe i've just been lucky, it'll probably pop off tonite, since we are talking about it :D
