Hey fellow pool players, I hope this thread can jump off with many posts. Playing with high level players has made me realize many things, and the biggest being that their safety game is ridiculous.

I know alot of phenomenal players frequent this site and I think it's a good idea to post done safeties you've played, or have seen played. Let's try and make this a database for all players.

I'm posting from my phone right now so I can't load any pictures right now. But, I and many other players would love it if we could see many safety options across all different kinds of situations in pool.

Feel free to post as many or as little as you want., let's get this thread active!

One of the TAR matches, Alex vs Shane, race to 21, hill hill, Shane plays a nice safe that the announcers did not see, was hailed as a game winning shot, at the time.

It's on sale at TAR I think, pretty cheap for a great match.

I'm sure many have seen it, please don't post what happens that match, get some TAR sales going for this one.

Although I can't 100% say it's safe, the pool table layout software site looks to be running and I visited it 3-4 times with no issues at all.

My safety play improved immeasurably when I accepted that I had to figure out the final position of two balls, not just one. When pocketing an OB you really don't care about where the OB is going...it's going in the pocket and that's end-of-story. But when playing safe you have to be absolutely precise with one of the balls and near-absolutely-precise with the other one. It takes twice the amount of "figuring" time, but it's essential.

The other thing is to identify the best "forts" on the table. I think of them as "forts" because I want to hide behind a fort. Sometimes they're real obvious (three balls clustered together) but other times you'll have to consider the entire table to find balls lined up on the same general line the length of the table. Sometimes the fort is only one ball.

Lastly is to understand that the closer you can put the CB to a blocking OB, the harder it is for your opponent. Frozen is best. Most of the time the difference between a locked-down safe and an easy kick escape is 1/4".

... I and many other players would love it if we could see many safety options across all different kinds of situations in pool.

Feel free to post as many or as little as you want., let's get this thread active!
FYI, a bunch (withe video demos) can be found here:

I have a series of fifty 8-ball safety shots appearing two each month in Pool Billiard magazine. Two-thirds of the way through the series as of January.

I also teach them as a three-hour course for people tired of losing at 8-ball.

Are those articles available online? If so, please provide links.

seeing safes

Seeing safes is a lot like seeing dead balls on the table, takes practice. Sometimes the safety is ridiculous. How often do you see somebody safe somebody against the ball they have to shoot at? Can be a viciously tough safety sometimes! Main thing about safeties is keep them simple. If you have any other option and the safety isn't seventy-five percent or better the other option may be the better course. Depends on what the safety will do too. Will it keep him from hitting a ball giving you ball in hand or will it only keep him from pocketing a ball leaving you to ponder unintended consequences afterwards.

No way to diagram them but the best, sickest, most ridiculous safeties are timed shots. Put the cue ball in a cluster or the jaws of the pocket then roll an illegal ball to hit in on top of it. Very few people can successfully jump over a ball an inch or less in front of the cue ball. Tends to blow people's mind when they realize they are in an absolutely impossible situation to get out of too, not even a one in a million shot.
