So whilst browsing the for sale section I came across this ad by Bank it. He is selling "Pre flag" chalk for $1 a cube. Hmm mm. I wondered what's up with this chalk? So I replied "what's so special?". This is what I got in reply..

1 Quite different from regular masters chalk.
2 No longer in production for quite a few years now so what's left is all there is.
3 Is preferred by many players over currently available chalk.
4 If you search other sale ads you will find that I am more reasonable.
"I hope this ELICIDATES it for you".
Well, having grown up in the land of McDermotts and Masters, I knew better. So I asked Skip at masters what's up. Here is his reply.

Hello Michael:

Thank you for the nice phone conversation and great support of Master and Tweeten products. *

To give you the background, (wow I wish I had a nickel for every time I had to write this)….following 9/11 I wanted to do something to show our support and patriotism as being an American company. *I decided to put the American flag on every piece of chalk that goes all over the world. *That was it. *Nothing more then being a proud American company.

Someone decided to create the story that we changed something when the flag came on. *Not sure why or how this rumor was started and there is certainly absolutely zero evidence to support that rubbish but nontheless that’s what some started to say. *The fact is we make two version of our Master label (which by the way is just a label and has nothing to do with the chalk other then cover it) and always have. *One has the American flag on it and the other is the traditional Master label that hasn’t changed (except maybe the zip code) in forever. *So even today contrary to what some believe we still make Master chalk with and without an American flag on the label.

I hope this answers your questions.

All the best,

*So when an American company does something in remembrance of that day and all those who have served and died as a result, Masters gets dirt bags like Bank it telling the world that their product has changed ( and for the worse) and is now trashing Masters and attempting to make a buck off anyone dumb enuf for believe that crap.
Masters is the symbol af American excellence in the billiard industry and the world over for that matter.
Their excellent chalk is still made right and made right here. And at an affordable price no less!

So Bank It, I hope this ILUCIDATES it for you sir.

.

Well a dollar a piece is a good price. If I sold mine, I would charge more.

Not all chalk is created equal. You can buy a box of 144 pieces, and not all

the pieces will be the same. Some will be more course grit than others.

And I would say----nothing is the same from years ago.

...................WOW LOL I wonder who started this rumor.

Back in 2012, I bought a carton of Blue Diamond (25 boxes w/ 2 cubes ea.)
Prior to buying the carton, I had already gone thru 3 boxes of Blue Diamond
which is why I bought a carton. I liked the chalk consistency & it was clean.

I still have some of the chalk from my carton purchase and I also have some
MC as well I've acquired as gifts for some of my pals from time to time. My
preferred chalk to play with remains to this day.....Blue Diamond.....my hands
and cues stay so much cleaner, I chalk every shot or at worst, every other, so
according to Dr. Dave's test results, my choice of chalk performs as good as
any other chalk he's tested. When you like the product, why bother switching?

Based upon my experience with Blue Diamond, the chalk consistency is better
than most other chalks and certainly as good as any I've ever tried, including
Master Chalk (both versions). If you in the mood to try a different chalk, I give
Blue Diamond two thumbs up & until a superior chalk comes along, it's my brand.

Good post. This is probably the 50th post that confirms this. Or as Skip suggests... the millionth.

There's something that people always seem to miss in all this. They STILL MAKE NO-FLAG Master Chalk LABELS. They have always, and your email for the millionth time confirms it. Chalk is the same, but they make they wrap with the no-flag version for countries that might not want a US Flag on their chalk.

That being said, there seems to be a lot No-Flag Masters running around in the San Diego area. Best I can tell, these are absolute fake Masters chalk. Most people here don't like it because it's too creamy. Pretty sure nobody who loves "pre-flag" ever liked it because it was creamier. If it is creamier with no flag, it's a knock off.

Unfortunately,,, there will always be people that will never be convinced the chalk is the same as before even when told by the main man Skip....
They could switch back to no flag and flood the market. That would really cause a stir,,, pre-flag and post flag.
Wait,, maybe there is a big chalk conspiracy,, I should put my pre-flag in a safe and hold on to it another 10 years..

Keep Strokin AZers

Couldn't an independent chemist put this to rest in a hurry?

Does chalk go bad? If so, what causes it to go bad? Age? Temperature? Humidity? All the above?

When I first started playing pool, back in 2010, I read about it all I could. And one thing I read about, particularly in this forum, was how preflag Master's chalk was the supposed bee's knees. I really wanted to try it, so when I saw somebody was selling some I just had to try it out. I bought several cubes from Fast Larry Gunninger. You guys might have heard of him. He shoots at about the level of a Mike Sigel or Buddy Hall...or so he wants you to believe. The chalk does seem to stick to the tip real well, but it wasn't worth the price I paid per cube. $1 is a very good price. I can't remember what I paid, but they were definitely more than that. The past few years I've been playing with Blue Diamond and feel more content playing with chalk that I know I won't have to search far and wide for. But I'd be content shooting with any chalk that is Master's level or higher, doesn't cause a mess, and doesn't cost more than $4 per cube.

Seems everybody is missing the elephant in the room. There are some members, believe it or not, who don't like the United States flag. It's a political agenda and has nothing about chalk adhesiveness.
God Bless America.

A further note:

MikieG, I pulled your comments off another's sales thread.
What you are doing is against the forum's rules and then taking effort to create a special thread calling him out specifically.

You're a relatively new poster and I think you should apologize and change your ways. I have banned people for this offense.

Doesn't the moori tip company swear they are making there tip the same way as like "20 years ago when they played so awsome" yet everyone says the new ones are nothing like the old ones. Same thing here. I don't feel anyone should be giving the guy that is trying to sell his preflag chalk on here because he is just going by what a ton of people have said about the chalk over the years. Etc.

I prefer Blue Diamond, but will use Master just as well.
Incidentally
Tweeten makes Blue Diamond, Triangle, Master, Silver Cup, and Elk Master (Tips)
(Different formula's)
They're down the street from me.

Or maybe do a blind comparison, with some of the ones that claim there is a difference? If they cannot pick out the pre-flag chalk in a blind test it would pretty much disprove their claims that there is a difference.

Mr Wilson, if this site bans people for telling the truth and calling out those ripping others of by living, then go ahead and get out your ban hammer as I have no use for a place like that.
Just because I am new here doesn't make me any less right. And my newness does not make the resident know it alls less wrong.
So if you are interested in getting rid of a guy because he is right and told the truth, then with out further adoux.
This would not have gone this far is Bank It had not have responded to my innocent question in such a snide and condescending way.

You just mentioned THE most important point that should be taken away from threads like these.

THE CONDITION OF EVERY CHALK WILL CHANGE OVER TIME.
TO WHAT DEGREE IT CHANGES, DEPENDS ON HOW IT IS STORED AND HOW LONG.

The flag appearing on the chalk can only tell you one thing for sure:
It was made after Sept 2001.

Other than that, flag or no flag means absolutely nothing on the quality scale.
The only thing that "could" matter, is the effects of time.

Time might make it better, it might not. " Better" is subjective.
It depends on what you like.

If you like old Masters, cool. But it has zero to do with flags.

Negative.

We have established forum rules that cover "knocking" sales threads and others that cover harassment of posters.

You've met both criteria.
You've also just made it apparent that you felt he was condescending toward you in private and made your beef public.

As for innocent, I can't agree. From where I sit, you had an agenda.
There are plenty of people that believe what they want to believe.
You haven't been given any license to run around righting perceived wrongs.

You're way out of line. Grow the heck up. The seller can sell whatever he wants. He made no outlandish claims. And it's true, for what ever reason, some folks to prefer pre flag Masters, so what. If you are not one of them, then don't buy it.

And yes, everyone pretty much knows the story about pre-flag, it's only been discussed here a million times, so much, I never felt the need to even bring it to Skip the few times I met him. It's an old story, and if folks like it better, so be it. Why would you even care enough to start a thread on it?????

If someone sells Pre-flag Magic Chalk one day, it won't bother me, and it should not bother anyone else. And yes, just like masters, the flag was added but formula was not changed. I just like flags so I added it a few months ago.
