Predator Las Vegas Mens Open

Filler wins the game count 12-9. Loses the shootout 3-4. I'm ok with this format, as it does give the underdog a better chance to win, IMO. That can lead to more excitement, which is good for the sport. People like rooting for the underdog.
Happens in tennis all the time, winner of match doesn't always win most games. Funny how only pool fans squeal about this. I agree here, the format is exciting and fans love it.

i don't usually root for grabe but i did this time. dug deep and put up a good fight

i think he's great. take him over that loony limey or Techeya ANY DAY. GT and his ultra-lame attempts at saying names in native lingo is brutal. he also constantly calls the wrong shots. time to put two REAL players in the booth. Frost,Schmidt,Roberts are all good.

words are his tools. problem is they are sometimes dull and he keeps misplacing them.

Wait, Grabe won? When I went to bed he was firing balls into the rail and just clearly rattled completely while Josh was on auto pilot.

Edit: wow. That's a comeback I wasn't expecting. Good show Grabe.

I checked in on the Filler-Grabe match. Filler was up two sets to zero and the third set was 1-1. Figured he'd win and I stopped watching. Hah.

Grabe has played his best pool over the past year and, like Filler, has benefited from the weaker competition in WPA events since the ban.

Predator put on a very nice event, maybe the best-run one it has managed. Predator seems to be upping its game and production quality to keep up with MR, and that's a great thing.

The one big negative, of course, was the playing field. No wonder Predator created some non-sanctioned events to get SVB, Sky and company in Vegas. American fans want to see those American players.

I was watching and playing off and on and thought the same thing at that point, but then I was like, hell I don't wanna miss it if he does pull it off and it started getting exciting when he won that 3rd set and started to take off in the final set. Then when Filler missed that last spot shot it was pretty cool to watch Grabe sink that winning shot.

I was also commenting to my best friend that Predator listened and the new format is way better than before and 4 races to 4 with a shootout if it's 2-2 is actually a good format.

Exactly what I was thinking. I actually decided to go to bed in the 3rd set when Grabe made a horrible miss, but then I figured I'll wait another 20 minutes for Filler to finish it off or to witness a great comeback. I am glad I stayed up.

I appreciate what MR does, but, IMO this format is more likely to hook the casual viewers. I made my daughter watch the last set and the shootout and she actually got into it at the end. The only other thing I have ever gotten her to watch is the MC.

Same here! What a finish!

Predator did a great job on this event.

Kevin D. James posted this on Facebook earlier today. After looking at frame-by-frame playback, I agree with him that it was a bad call (i.e., not actually a foul) by the ref. Filler did not argue the call. It was in the 3rd game of the 4th set, with the score 2-0 Grabe. Thoughts regarding video replay?
"Ref gets the call wrong in this Kamui Las Vegas Men's Open championship match last night between Dennis Grabe and Joshua Filler. Nothing against the ref! Their job is hard enough and sometimes, because of the position of the balls (close proximity to one another) and the speed of the cue ball, you just can't tell with the naked eye which ball was hit first. That's why I think slow motion replays should be used in all championship finals matches to help refs make more accurate calls on questionable shots like these, especially when big money is on the line. What do you think?"

Edit: Incidentally, both Teyechea and Schmidt, commentating, claimed that they knew it was a foul from the direction of the balls after the hit.

I also liked John and Erik doing commentary. They worked well together and both have good clear voices. Easy to listen too. Not to mention they know what they're talking about!
