Pro rivalries

In every sport there are some players or teams that really dislike each other for any number of reasons, real or imagined.
Are there any such examples in pool? I can't think of any that stand out.

Earl & Cory

I have an idea as to why very few pool rivalries exist. Head to head matchups. I think rivalries in other sports equate to woofing in pool. And as it’s been said before...put up or shut up. In basketball, you never hear Larry Bird call Magic Johnson out to a one on one game. In pool it happens every day. I think this eliminates a lot of rivalries.

I think pool sparks a few rivalries....then they match up on the action table, someone takes down a long set and we now have settled the rivalry. I know this is a very simplistic view on things but it seems to kinda pan out.... For example....DCC SVB and Darren Appleton. They discussed a game for a few days...ie wolfing, rivalry, A game of stakes was made. SVB takes it down in about 10 hours. End of rivalry.

Now everyone flame me for my opinion....:D

I think on TV they said Hillbilly and Rob Saez don't care for each other.....I never heard why.

Corey and Mika

This is a great rivalry, stemming I believe from Corey's 11-0 shellacking of Mika in the US Open five or so years ago. Since then Mika's gotten a lot better, winning the World Championship since then. I recall a video of their match-up playing 8-ball in the IPT, Corey played a safety or something that looked like a safety, and Mika was overheard stating to his cornerman, "Is he trying to get smart with me?" As for me, I go for Corey. I don't know either one, but Mika comes off to me as arrogant.

tell the story!! :D

I think it stemmed from the way Cory was breaking against Earl in the finals of the U.S. Open a few years back. Earl questioned Cory's manhood referring to his soft break.

Earl and Corey

Earl had a notable confrontation with Corey at the first, and perhaps only, Camel tournament that Corey won. They were playing for the championship, and Earl quit. It might have been because of Corey's break. This was five or more years ago. I believe this was Corey's first big win.

Jude,
I was thinking about this one because of the Camel incident as well as the racking controversy in the 2001 Master's 9 ball. However, since then they have become golfing buddies and are respectful of each other.

Chesscat,
I've met both several times and each time, they were direct opposites of each other. Corey is down to earth, warm and talkative. He'll pose for photos and interact with people. He acts like he's been your buddy for some time. Mika, however, was always aloof and very smug. I don't want to say arrogant but that is the best description of how he acts. He seems put off by people speaking with him. I promise I've seen him refuse photos several times, and I'm not talking after a loss either. Just when he was standing around waiting.
I root for Corey over him whenever they play.

I was thinking about it too and you could actually say, pool's biggest rivalry is Earl versus the entire world, most notably Southeast Asia.

Im 90% sure Mika had already won the Wpc at the time off their US Open meeting.

Right you are, Nostroke,
Immonen won the 2001 World 9 Ball Championship in July, then Deuel won the U.S. Open 9 Ball title in September, 2001.

For current players...I would have to go with Corey and Mika with the biggest rivalry, also! Go get him Corey! ;)

Dare I say....Efren, and Parica?!.......DOH! theres a thread or 20!

I am now a huge Jose fan because he posed for a pic with me and Santos at the Expo;)
