Pro rivalries

I am now a huge Jose fan because he posed for a pic with me and Santos at the Expo;)

Was just about to say this. Anyone know if they have matched up for the cash in any recent history? Most recent match I know of is when Efren killed him in the 07 DCC.

For awhile when the IPT was happening, there seemed to be rivalry developing between Earl and Gerda. And as some of you must know from a quote by Earl himself, its him against the world.

Dont take this wrong i'm a big fan of Earl's, to me he is a true deserving HOF for what he done within the pool world. Lets not turn this into another debate about his behavior.

I don't know if you call it a rivalry but Buddy Hall and David Matlock matched up several times. Dave beat him on the bar table 10 ahead, and sometime later beat buddy on both tables (the only player to ever have done something like that). Buddy never lost playing for the cash except to David Matlock. My friend who is great friends with David, said that Dave used to call up the champions when he was drunk and woof them over the phone to play 10 ahead sessions. He used to call Buddy "BB Gun" instead of Rifleman. he used to rib Little David Howard, Allen Hopkins, and Mike sigel. I know he beat David real easy and allen and mike stayed away from him.

All talk. Fats couldn't beat Mosconi if Mosconi was shooting with a wet noodle.
I agree completely. But they seemed to have a genuine dislike for one another.

Agreed, I have never met either but thats the exact feel I get from watching them on TV. I remmber a nineball tourney in New York (possibly last year) where Corey and Mika played and Mitch Laurance said something along the lines of "These two certainly don't go out to the movies together after the game" or something along those lines. It was definatly an interesting matchup and Mika accused Corey of sharking his break and such, great match.

Recently though I was reading some back issues of BD and noticed a photo of Mika, Corey, and one other 'celebrating', they are literally embraced and laughing together for making it toa new round in the IPT (issue with bata-bling on the front I believe). I found this photo funny because of what I perceived was some hard feelings towards eachother.

In every sport there are some players or teams that really dislike each other for any number of reasons, real or imagined.
Are there any such examples in pool? I can't think of any that stand out.

I seem to remember a brawl in the parking lot between Carlos Viera and Jimmy Reid, or was that Eric and Fast Larry? Whoever it was, I wouldn't have bought a ticket to watch it anyway.

I seem to remember a few years back at DCC that Corey was playing Luat some high stakes rotation. Wasn't anyone around watching because they were all checking out Efren and Cliff Joyner playing some one hole. Mika sat down next to me and a buddy of mine and had some really good things to say about Corey in the 15 minutes he sat there. Who knows, there could still be some rivalry there I guess even though he was complimenting Corey on his play.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the recent rivalry between Travis Trotter and Earl Strickland. This is of course, the result of Earl's recent release from Cuetec and his subsequent harsh words about their cues.

To quote Travis: "earl says that playing with a cuetec is like spotting two balls to a player like mika immonen but everyone knows that i can spot earl two balls using my apa cuetec if earl has to use a traditional wooden cue if he used a good quality cue like a cuetec it would be a more even match but i would still come out on top"

Them's fightin words if I've ever heard them.

If Jimmy Reid was involved, part of me suspects that he was having to peel some lech away from his very fine female companion. I've been watching a lot of ESPN pool on the TiVo this past year, and I'm always pausing to catch a better glimpse of the sultry, sharp-eyed, long-haired mystery brunette who was often in the VIP seating right behind one of the principals in the match. Then, just a couple of days ago, in an old Bicycle Club match, Strickland turned to say something to her, and Allen Hopkins said "He's saying something to Jimmy Reid". Well, it didn't exactly look like he was talking to Reid, but the mystery was solved.

I looked him up on the net, and the curious thing is, for all of the skill he apparently possessed, and titles he has held, Jimmy Reid is appears to be a relatively unheard of player, (or should I say, less notorious). But he sure had game - in more ways that one.

Respect.

I saw that... the layout of the arena was so tight that when Mika broke, Coreys foot was practically in his butt. I still think it was simply a nervous twitch on Coreys part...

that is some very interesting info regarding David Matlock
Yeah the David Matlock stories when he lived in Ponca City are legendary. He was open to the world playing in ponca city. They brought alot of good players to beat him and they failed to bust him there in oklahoma. I remember tony fargo saying that he was at a tournament several years ago and jose parica woofed at david matlock to play on the bar table. He said " you got the last 2 on the bartable" and David woofed back " f#ck that you got the last 2" obviously they never played but it sounded cool for two champions woofing at each other and not letting the other out do the other.

What's extraordinary about this is that it has got to be one of the longest-running rivalries ever, dating back to when the both of them were still exclusively playing in the Philippines.

I think this was Rodney Morris...

It also seemed to me that Mika and Corey were the best of friends after seeing that pic. Never knew about their "rivalry", in any case. Don't know much about both players, although I know that Mika is (was) well-loved in the Philippines, especially after his WPC win and subsequent visits to the country to play in invitational tournaments. I think he even co-owns a bar there together with some friends. Anyone know if it's still a going concern?

IIRC, Mika has a part-ownership in a pool bar in Bangkok, Thailand, not the Phillipines.

There is no love lost between Frankie Hernandez and Robb Saez, in fact I believe one time it got physical. Anyone know about it?

Surprise?

Not a bit knowing Frankie's personality. Probably not the only one.

And Matlock lived, or dwelled, in several Oklahoma towns, through the 80's and early 90's. I watched the very first match he played when he came to Kansas for the first time, and played Jr. Brown 7 ahead for $700. Jr. got one shot, and dogged it, I think, because even he was amazed at David's skill. David made one, if not the best, jump shots with a full cue I have ever seen. I was the only spectator allowed to watch the match at the Old Mr. Lucky's here in Wichita.

It was pretty common knowledge back then that David had 3 oilmen backers that would go up to 1/2 million with him. BTW, I beat David
one time when he failed to show up on Sunday for our scheduled match in the old big Rumors tournaments here. ......LOL

And David told me himself that his 9 ball record on a bar table is 28 consecutive racks.
