I just received 40 pieces of purpleheart, which are actually more brown than purple. Last week I got 6 pieces of figured purple so after looking at this, I'm a little disappointed. I read where it does turn brown with exposure. Once turned, will it be purple underneath or do I have 40 pieces of brownheart practice wood?
 
Actually, it's usually a shade of brown after cutting, then turns purple. Then after a lot of time goes by with exposure to the sun, can/will turn brown again. I have had a few pieces stay brownish in spots, but I think it was just low quality pieces from the tree.

I think it depends on which species of p/h it is. It grows from Mexico/Central America to tropical South America. Some are a rich deep purple-violet color and will pretty much stay that way. Others start out purple but mature to a dark brown that if you look hard and long you will not see the purple you once did. Exposing to sunlight after cutting will darken color but prolonged exposure will lead to the brown . Try putting a piece in a sunlit window and see if it darkens up over a week or so. If not it never will.

I got some very nice bem and figured PH from this person and was very pleased, so this is a bit of a shock. If it were advertised as brown PH, I wouldn't have thought about buying it. Of course, the person I deal with and the person picking the orders are not the same so most likely not his fault
as I don't feel it was done on purpose.

Hi,

I take my cues with purple heart to final dimension, then I spin in in my spray booth and expose it to UV light. Comes out real nice.

I don't use my UV light for finishing for a variety of reasons. Having the light for purple heart is a nice little bonus.

Can also try the method that BHQ did awhile ago, bake it in the oven and see how it gets. He did it with rings thought, not a whole piece. They came out really purple. I can't find the link to the thread he had:frown:

Take it and set in the Sun for about a everyday for a week. It should turn real deep purple! At least that works for me!
