I quit for good in August of 2010, after 10+ years of a pack a day. It is hard, but it can be done. To everyone that is on day 2 or 5 or 128, just know that every day does get a little bit easier.

Stay strong!

I quit on Feb 15 2010. I had smoked about a pack and a half a day at the time I quit. Didn't even smoke much during the day but would head out to play pool after work and pretty much had a cigarette lit most of the time. I was at least a pack a day smoker for 20+ years and at 35 I finally got tired of the chronic cough and generally feeling bad.

For me deciding that I didn't want to be a smoker anymore was the key. I went out and had a few beers the day I quit and did not have the craving for a smoke because I had convinced myself that I no longer wanted to be a smoker.

Chantix is great, we both love it

Good luck Bud. Yeah, its worth it for the health of the little one. They will have enuff shit to deal with once they grow up.

Specially dealing with a Dad like you. Just teasing.

Have to tell you a story of the first time I tried to quit. I was on that other drug, can't remember the name. Supposed to take one before you go to bed.

I did the first night and had wild dreams. I was in a haunted barn. Little heads that were ghosts were chasing me around. These heads were Mexican Gang members. Even tho they were just heads, I could tell they had leather jackets on. Little black pencil thin mustaches.

So every night there after, I would take my pill and think, let the cartoons begin.

It was wild. Don't need acid when you do this stuff. Oh yeah, every night. I seriously looked forward to the next set of dumb a ss dreams.

My wife smokes around me all the time. Doesn't bother me a bit other than it smells like crap. But then, maybe my cigar smoke smells like crap to her to.

I believe welbutrin (sp?) is also prescribed for smoking cessation, which is a antidepressant. Yes, the dreams are crazy on Chantix too, it also demotivates me quite a bit. My friend can't take it, makes him super depressed. They do list depression and suicidal thoughts as side effects, but I seem to be OK on it. I am not a very depressive person, so maybe it depends on your personality, I don't know.

Whatever works, to each their own.

A friend of mine who attempted to quit with chantix (but failed) was telling me about some of the dreams he had....it was crazy. He was telling me he had a dream that he manually strangled and then beheaded Justin Beiber, we all got a good chuckle out of that, as I cant stand that useless sack of skin and neither can he.....but you get the idea, the dreams were horrendous! He finally said piss on it and quit the psycho drugs and resumed smoking. A heart attack and 3 stints about a year later, he successfully quit cold turkey!!

For those on the fence, please PLEASE give it a try, your life depends on it. I watched long time friend die of lung cancer after a lifetime of smoking last April, he was 69yrs old. It was NOT pretty!! I tried ONE time to quit, and was successful the first time after 19 years of smoking, I was a half-a-pack a day smoker, a pack would last me 2~3 days.. If anyone has any questions about quitting, I'll be happy to answer and help out....if its something you don't really want to ask in public, feel free to PM me!!

Best of luck!

Good for you Pryme.......

Nice idea I just joined the forums recently, I actually tried quitting a day ago and I just bought a new pack :( .. I was hoping to stop smoking and save that money to buy my first cue, il try to make this pack last till monday and quit!

The whole forum has your back.

The stories are strong and some are very sad. There is nothing good that can come from this self destructive habit that many of us have or had.

I sure hope that you can become one of the hads.

Good Luck my friend.

I also want to thank all the AZers that have contributed so far. This response of help has been more than I could have ever imagined.

But then again we have an awful lot of good people in this pool world of ours.

Not surprised at all.

google "snus" and "general portion". a lot of NHL hockey players use it, it's not detrimental to your health. you'll miss the smoke the first week but then you'll wonder why you didn't try snus before ;)

Best of luck to you, Mark. Sweet blessings are coming your way. You can do this! :)

Congratulations. It is a matter of just getting the mindset that you're going to accomplish this task of quitting. Once that happens, anyone can do it.

I must say that when I was smoking, I did enjoy it, and I did not like anybody telling me I should quit, I need to quit, it's good for my health, et cetera. In the words of Frank Sinatra, I had to do it "my way,"and I did. And I am so glad I did.

Anyone who is reading this thread who is smoking and wants to quit, when your time comes to take that first step and not smoke, you can do this. You just have to really want it badly. It took me about 3 years of wanting to quit before I finally followed through. Better late than never. :grin-square:

I did quit last Monday, so today is day 8 for me and my wife.

We have been wanting to quit for 5+ years, did quit for 6 months on 2 separate occasions.

We are not strong enough for one to quit and not the other, and thanks to some new motivation my wife received Friday before last, I think this time we will stay quit. Well, at least for the next 9 months, and hopefully won't be stupid enough to start again.

Chantix is great, we both love it, although she is only using a patch this time.

Had some drinks over the weekend, damn that was tough.

Different strokes for different folks.

The Chantix was around when I quit, and I actually bought it, paid over 100 bucks, but after reading the side effects, I decided not to use it. It could have been my rationalizion to keep smoking that stopped me from using it, though. :embarrassed2:

It was a lump in my neck that scared me. I quit right away, even though I had been wanting to for a long time. It turns out that lump was just a swollen gland. :p

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I did quit smoking, and I would not let anybody smoke in our home after she was born. I did end up going back to smoking, though, but I never, ever smoked in her presence.

Years ago, I can remember restaurants offering a no-smoking section way, way in the back of the room near the kitchen in a crappy area. Today, it is the opposite; that is, if you can find a restaurant that even offers smoking. Smokers are deemed as outcasts in social settings. They are instructed to go outside, and even being outside now, at least in my area, communities are passing laws to ban smoking outside in certain areas where the public congregates.

Good decision for you and yours to quit smoking now. Best of luck to you both.:smile:

Well today is day 2....... Went from a pack a day and tried to go the whole day but broke down not because I needed one but mainly out of boredom at work....... that mental part is the worst. Didn't really even feel like I wanted one but just found myself lighting one up and realized what I was doing..... dammit..... Day 2, can't really chalk it up as a success but not a total failure.

Pulling for everyone here who has decided to attempt to quit. Brian, I don't consider that a failure. Merely a bump in the beginning of a long road. Think of your son every time you reach for one and how he will be glad for all of those extra days you are adding to your life for all of those cigarettes you are giving up. Good luck to you and others here. Keeping my fingers crossed that you are all successful.

I made it through yesterday and am still smoke free (last cigarette was Sunday night)

Chewing gum and sucking on lollipops is helping :)

Instead of just complaining about the smoke we're actually saving lives here on AZ.

By becoming a Rock for yourself your also a Rock for everyone that reads your post and has wanted to quit but just couldn't.

If one person quits because of your words on here you have just saved a life or part of it for sure.

Good Luck with your fight that I'm sure you are going to win.

Thanks Gene, I appreciate that. I am hanging in there right now :)

Third day for me was the hardest. Try sipping on hot liquids. They take a while to go through since they are hot, and they help with that oral fixation. Think tea, broth, soup, coffee, warm apple cider. :)

It sounds corny, but that expression "one day at a time" is a good motto to have when quitting smoking. :)

Today is worse than yesterday. Had to get really busy, several times, to distract myself from wanting a smoke. That seems to work the best.

I know when I first quit, I probably thought about smoking a cigarette 100 times or more each day. It was difficult to get by it. Certain triggers like stress, after a nice meal, on the phone, at the computer, et cetera, were times when the craving was bad. :frown:

After 2 weeks, I thought about smoking a cigarette maybe 20 times a day instead of 100.

After 1 month, I thought about smoking a cigarette maybe 5 times a day.

After 2 months, maybe 1 time a day.

After 3 months, I never looked back and was so happy with myself that I overcame the addiction.

One day at a time, you can get there. It gets better from here. Just remember that if you cave in, which I have done, and smoke, you have to start that withdrawal process all over again. That is what kept me from smoking. I did not want to go through withdrawing from the beginning again. The longer you go wihtout a cigarette, the easier it is as far as withdrawals. :)

Try saying to yourself I can have a cig. anytime I want to.
I however, choose to be smoke free.

Look at the decision as a choice, not a chore, and you
choose to be smoke free. You choose to live! You win!
That's positive!

Much more positive than to say "I can't have one."
Which in reality, is a negative sentence.
When you say the sentence above, what your subconscious is hearing is
"I can have one". In other words, say and think what you
want to do <---> not what you don't want to do.
Say positive to Stay Positive!

Your subconscious doesn't understand
negatives such as the word "can't" or other negatives such
as won't, couldn't, shouldn't, wouldn't. The way you say things
(Self Talk) is very important, whether it's to stop smoking or
improve your pool game. (Quick Tip: Buy saying "I don't want to"
hit this shot into the long rail, because you have hit the last
two shots into this same long rail just before the corner would
actually be telling yourself "I do want to" hit this shot into the rail.)
"I will make this shot" in the corner would be positive here.

I kept 3/4 of a pack with in reaching distance for 6 months
just so when I said to my self, I can have one if I want to
they were right there. When I looked in their direction,
I said to my self I choose to be smoke free. When I stopped
looking I threw the pack away.

I haven't smoked since and that was years ago.
This wasn't my first rodeo, just the first time it worked.

mean I condone it being in the Main forum.

Great thread, I could never figure out the benefits of smoking. Every smoker tells me it relaxes them but it's really just the effect of satisfying the addiction.

Worst part is that I have to deal with a kid that smokes, another kid that probably started smoking because she's hanging out with friends and a boyfriend that smokes, and a wife who tells me she quit but I still smell smoke on her every so often.

The only thing that is more useless than smoking is $30 chalk LOL

Hope everyone gets healthy!
