Question about slate

I work for a company that does granite counter tops and they are cut with a water jet so I would think slate is the same but softer.

Interesting. What’s the next best thing to slate? If there is such a thing
There are different kinds of "slate". Brazil produces a very hard slate that a lot of companies seem to be using now. Italian slate is softer and easier to work. A brief search online gives lots of propaganda from people trying to sell you one or the other. Like "beautiful and fascinating", which is irrelevant if it's covered with cloth.
